Have a 2019 F150 with the 10 R 80 Trans. Wanting to avoid all of the problems and start doing a flush and fill every 4th oil change. What is the best way to do this? Also is the purchase of a metal transmission pan worth it? Thanks

Do not flush. Drain and fill.

I pull the fluid out with a pneumatic extractor and fill the same way.

That is what I meant to say drain and fill. About how much fluid to refill? Thanks, you are the man with the answers.

I usually get between 4-5 quarts on drain and fill.

Do you just drain and replace once or multiple times?

I drain and fill mine regularly, 40-60K miles or so. The main idea is to replenish the additive package and keep everything happy.

I think he meant do you go through multiple drains/fills each time.

Hey could you post a link to the extractor you use and the fluid/ additive you replace with ?
Thanks

I generally don't.

Mityvac or similar is what I think he uses.

I bought one a few years ago for my 2010 when this came up at his suggestion.

I measure the amount that comes out and replace the same amount. Regular Motorcraft ULV fluid for the 10 speed

I'm also curious what you (@1ags) use to drain and fill. Recently picked up a 2020 with the 10R80.

I have a pneumatic one at the house that uses shop air.

For onsite customers I use a 12v one with a battery rig that drains and fills.

@1ags
Which model do you use with shop air? I have air at home and am debating between a manual and air MityVac.

I use the Capri brake bleeder combo and just take the brake bleeder attachment off.

For filling I use the motive power filler. Has a hooked nose for filling 10R and 6R non dipstick applications.

ULV only for those right?

Read your manual but they're all ULV except for a very
Few early ones.

I assume the 10R80 has the same level check after filling procedure as the 10L80 involving bringing the trans up to temp, keep engine on, open fill port until fluid stops flowing, install fill plug.

Nope.

Its actually a dipstick.

Theres two different kinds of them though.

Roger that. I've been researching a trans fluid and filter change for my 2019 Sierra with 6.2L and 10L80. It seems that the proper way to do this is to drop the catted downpipe/crossover, drop the pan, and refill through the port using the sequence I previously posted.

A dipstick would be super helpful.

Is it too late for a drain and fill on a '21 Expedition with 101,000 miles?

Suck out whatever you can from the fill hole and replace it with fresh fluid. Do it again in 30k.

This weekend I worked up the courage to tackle the transmission. I ended up dropping the pan and replacing the transmission filter on a 2020 F150 with 95k miles.

Thanks 1ags for the recommendations on tools:
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00OM751EC - Capri Tools CP21029 Vacuum Brake Bleeder
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0119DI58A - Motive Products 1735 Power Fill Pro Fluid Transfer Pump

I used the Capri to suck out as much fluid as I could. I think it was around 6 quarts.
Loosened the sway bar and let the coolant lines droop. Only then was I able to have enough clearance to pull the pan forward and drop the back. FordTechMakuloco has a good video that I followed. Luckily, very little if any metal on the magnets.

I used the Motive to fill it back up - actually ended up doing about 1.5-2 quarts too much even after repeatedly checking, then warming it up and doing a quick road test (sucked it out with the Capri). Finally got it to the proper level (5-6 on the dipstick) and driving feels much better. The 3-4 hesitation that started a couple weeks ago is no longer present.

Thanks for this group on the Auto board!
