Saw this guy charging in Santa Rosa on I-40. If you've been to Santa Rosa, you know it's in the middle of nowhere. I'm sure they're on a pretty good trek. I'm not sure how many stops it would take to charge towing a small trailer but you can bet the range anxiety is real.

I assume he's leaving California in an EV F-150 and will trade that in for a real truck once he gets to Texas.

What do you think the resale is like on that thing?

It just screams "negative equity on your trade"

The over stuffed bed is what gets me. They can probably make on EV charging, but the 45 minutes charging in Amarillo to make it out of the panhandle will be a major pain.

I assume there is a website/app that you can search for charging stations and you just have to plan that into your trip. I'm not sure how weight affects battery usage in an EV, is it a similar effect to increased fuel consumption in a gas or diesel?

ABRP, is a good site/app that I've used just to see other chargers, but the Tesla app does all of this for you once you plug in the destination address. For SuperChargers, it'll tell you whether it's 150/250/etc kw, how many stalls are open, and how long you need to charge at each one.

Stupid and I own a lightning. As a commuter they are great but right tool for the job, and for that job the lightning is a bad choice.

Ford's does the same when you add a destination.

May not have another affordable option.

Yep, probably a relocation and sometimes you gotta do what you gotta do. Will suck making a bunch of stops, but making two trips so you can tow a trailer, then tow your truck is silly.

The effect of towing on range for an EV is significant. Not even 100 miles range in some cases. Article

Combine that with the desolate nature of that stretch between Albuquerque and Oklahoma City, and you better be sure you're planning your trip between charging points and hope you don't have a headwind.

Maybe there's a generator and some gas cans buried somewhere in that load, now who's laughing!?

It's called renting a Uhaul and towing the vehicle. Done quite often actually.

Question, can you tow an EV?

No comment on the Lightning, but you reminded me how much I hate both I-40 and Loves

I'd rather find a place to charge every 120 miles versus drive/ride in a U-haul. At least the F150 is confortable.

Why is Love's diesel always 50 cents a gallon higher than the guy across the street?

Exactly. The husband of one of my wife's friends told me about his move from El Paso to Houston while driving a UHaul truck…speed limited to 55 and only AM/FM radio…and that was in 2007. He said he stopped and bought a cheap speaker to hook his iPod up to make it somewhat bearable.

Corporate contracts. Truckers aren't paying that amount.

Then the question is, who does pay it? I can see your answer as an explanation.

The other guess I had was that truckers were getting some sort of perks, and the company was buying the diesel, so the drivers don't care.

Combination.

They all have fuel cards. And then the rest of people just pay it because they're huge and easy to get in and out of.

When we RV trip, the gassers go to Loves, diesel rigs go elsewhere.

But if you're driving on the Texas to Colorado pilgrimage trail of 287, stop at the Valero/toot n totum in Amarillo, same thing in Clayton if necessary. We also stop at the loves or Phillips in Quanah.

Yeah, the Loves are always way too high on diesel and combine that with dirty pumps and systems that seem to rarely work (please see cashier), I just avoid them now.

I-40 just sucks. That road beat me up. 287 down into FW wasn't much better. We were in a F350 pulling a travel trailer with kids occasionally trying to nap....nope, big pothole, wake up.

Interesting. I think 287 is a mighty fine road. Divided 4 lane for most of it. Big shoulders.

Yep - that stretch of I-40 west of the TX/NM border is particularly rough, especially the outside lanes. Pothole after pothole. And tons of truck traffic.

Love's on I-40 are just like a tornado in a trailer park. It's their natural habitat.

I drove a 24 ft U-Haul (gas powered - never again) from Denver to Los Angeles when I moved in 2004.

There are 4 mountain passes you have to navigate between Denver and LA including one in Utah on I-70 that I thought we weren't going to make it when we got down to 25 mph.

Averaged 4 mpg in the 24 ft. U-Haul but... it had a bigger tank than the equivalent Ford Lightning no doubt.
