Ford 2018 10-Speed Transmission Finally Crapped out

Ford and Chevy should have used the ZF 8 speed instead of their own crappy 10 speed. The ZF is the only automatic transmissions I've ever owned/driven that was actually enjoyable to drive. Not as enjoyable as a manual, but better than I could possibly have imagined a torque converter automatic could be. That being said, I never had one long enough to experience any reliability issues.

The 10 speed in my former 2020 Chevy Silverado 1500 (New to 76K miles) was smooth, but lacked any meaningful controls. Sport mode made almost zero difference and the manual push button shifting was about as fun as manually shifting a CVT.

In my current 2019 Raptor (55K to 76K miles), the 10 speed is a clunky pile of **** that is only tolerable due to a custom ECU/TCU tune by the best in the business. The drive modes are far superior to the Chevy and the paddle shifters are better as well, but still feel numb in comparison to the ZF transmissions. It's only a matter of time until my CDF drum fails and I'm out several thousand dollars.

The ZF feels amazing and I trust ZF. We run ZF gears in our boats that just get beat on. It's a shame GM ditched a real Allison in recent years.

Google says iit was fixed (upgraded CDF drum) August 2002 so the 2023's and newer are fine. it's a travesty they didn't fix this sooner and have a recall. This was also on the heels of their cam phaser issues. Ford engineering really crapped the bed between 2015-2022.

My 2018 EcoBoost had the cam phaser issues and started exhibiting transmission hiccups @95K miles several months back. Really liked the truck but I ended up unloading it because I didn't want to dump so much $ into repairs roughly equivalent to what it was worth. It didn't make sense and I was wondering what would crap out next.

For a maintenance item on a DD, I'm not so keen on fumbling around the transmission while surrounded by cat converters that are the temperature of the surface of the sun.

I bought transmission fluid & filter about a year ago to swap it out myself, but never got the motivation to crawl under truck for the work At this point, a simple fluid & filter swap is not going to bring my torque converter back to operating properly.

Im watching this thread closely, Im having the same issue on my 2019 F 150 with same trans. Spoke with Circle D and was told that they do so many now they just get a unit from Ford or Jasper and install them instead of taking the time to rebuild anymore due to the volume they are seeing in their shop.

You're right, but it is significantly more cumbersome to do this than other transmissions, and that is even before figuring out how to read whichever version of the dipstick you have.

What percentage of people driving expeditions do you think are capable or willing to do this? What is the periodicity Ford recommends vs what this board recommends because it is a giant piece of *****


It's a crap transmission with a crap design with an unnecessarily cumbersome process to work on that Ford doesn't even recommend you doing at a periodicity that will actually keep the piece of crap running without issue. This is not a maintenance item The VAST majority of owners are capable of or willing to do. The bubble we are in on here is not representative of the normal expy owner whatsoever.

'18 Navigator's transmission crapped the bed but was fixed under extended warranty. Sold my '18 F150 before it had a chance because we didn't have a warranty. Replaced it with a real truck with a ZF S6-650.

No! i didn't realize this was an issue. I have an '18 lariat. I think just shy of 80k right now. As of this summer its our third vehicle so it only gets driven once a week maybe. But not looking forward to this.

Wonder if its worth it to get this fixed when it happens or just get rid of it??? Want to keep this as a third vehicle for the long hual. Had my cam phasers done twice. Really hoping for no major issues for a few years as little as its going to get driven.

Get rid of it now.

Carvana is paying a small fortune for these right now. Why- I have no idea.

I just ran my 2019 Raptor through their quote system and the offer was a complete joke.

I bought mine last year for a very reasonable price (compared to comps) and have put 22K miles on it. Clean history, very good condition, and highly optioned. They offered me $13K less than what I paid for it and about $7K -$8K less than what comps are asking. I get it's trade in value, but that's way below what I would accept.


Buying in 2020 might be why yours is so high. I bought a T/A 392 Challenger brand new in 2020. Traded it in at the end of 2023 31k miles and one wreck(on carfax) later for $3k less than I paid for it. Best automotive investment of my life.

That's interesting because other than gen1 truck 5.0s being underpowered, the 2018 is probably the worst year for 5.0s. The loss of cylinder liners leading to oil consumption was problematic. Maybe the fact that they're the first year and therefore cheapest available with the 10 speed has increased demand. Blown 5.0 4wd 10 speed F150s are the tuner car de jour.

Just put it through on Carvana and it offered 26k. Not Shabby. But thats probably a little over half what I paid.

2020 Expedition here... transmission was rebuilt under warranty around 30K, has been "reprogrammed" countless times, and still shifts like an epic piece of crap at around 86K. It's gotten to the point it's not worth our time to take it in to get it fixed, because it doesn't actually get fixed. We'll probably be looking to get rid of it before the warranty runs out.
