Yep we agree - infancy is a terrible word to describe something that has been evolving in automobiles for 38 years. Infancy - Your word that you used repeatedly.

Word choice matters. I gave you back exactly what you were giving - don't go around saying they suck - don't go around saying they are in their infancy.

Good night, and Happy New Year.

GM brought in about $2B in subscriptions last year, mostly from OnStar.

This is why GM is getting rid of CarPlay and Android Auto. They want to force you into their proprietary ecosystem so they can bring in that high margin revenue.

The automotive business model is really pissing me off.

I have a 2016 F150. I tried using Android Auto for a while, but for whatever reason it did not not like Waze or my android phone. Eventually just deleted it.

In 2021 I bought a new set of tires but forgot to replace the TPMS sensors at the time. The batteries ran out about a year later, so I have been driving around since then with the warning light on. This week I bought a new set of tires from the Goodyear service center. I remembered to tell them I wanted new sensors. It took them four hours to figure out how to reprogram the new sensors. They could not use their standard aftermarket sensors and had to buy direct from Ford. Of course, they didn't figure that out until they had already installed the aftermarket sensors and couldn't program them.

This is hilarious. I use aftermarket sensors daily in Ford vehicles and have zero issues. You have to have the right tool to program first for the right kind of vehicle and then program it to the specific vehicle.

It is until you can't find parts. Ask me how I know.

I hear you, I've been on the hunt for a clockspring for my '07 Acura TSX for a while. It has factory nav and some other stuff that's a bit uncommon so this part has become a bit of a unicorn for me.

Sorry to hear that. On my F150, it's AMAZING.

Colored, super-easy to see, even has my navigation, towing and gauge info on it.

HUD's are kinda in the infancy, I'm going to assume yours is in the far lower end.

Probably. My car is almost 10 years old.

My 98 has heads up technology.

I hold my head up and pay attention.

The push for subscriptions to use the entertainment and tech features is probably something they're seeing Tesla do with great success. Tesla charges $100/year for Premium Connectivity which allows for the streaming music platforms and live traffic among other things. And allows me to watch football on Hulu when I'm in the car waiting for whatever I'm waiting for. Hulu, YouTube and Netflix all have apps for Tesla along either a few others and that streaming requires a connection to use.

Then of course Tesla is charging $99/month for FSD but I hope nobody else is trying to charge for their ancient systems that are just adaptive cruise and lane keep assist. Those should be free at this point. Tesla is apparently eliminating Autopilot which was free for that combo of features.

I'm guessing the legacy manufacturers will try to way overcharge for a system that won't be very good, that seems to be what they do best at this point. CarPlay and Android Auto were the best thing to happen to cars in a long time because it absolved them of making OS and Nav systems that they were terrible at making. When we finally decide to replace my wife's Cadillac I'll be looking for CarPlay and not some proprietary mess GM or whomever put together. They just aren't good at it. I actually like Tesla's OS and would still prefer CarPlay which is rumored to be coming.

In a somewhat related note, does anyone with blue cruise notice their cameras reacting differently while wearing certain sunglasses? I have a pair of blue and green mirror costas. The blue ones work just fine, but I often get more pay attention alerts while wearing the green ones, even though I'm looking straight ahead and paying attention to the road.

The main thing that really pisses me off about blue cruise is the fact you can't set it above 80 mph. Also it seems to cut off anytime there's a moderate curve in the road which sucks as well.

I agree with you on this and did some research on it a month ago and learn that the reason they limited that speed is because there's basically a Bell curve on how fast the cameras can react with respect to how fast you're going in relation to being able to have the truck respond in time and your safety. Basically the Ford Engineers feel at 81MPH and Up, you need to be in Adaptive Cruise (lane keeping, etc) versus 100% hands-free. You dying doesn't help their reputation.

As for the glasses, you may already know this, but the system has two sensors, one on your left side on the window frame and the other up high near the rearview. They're designed to watch your eyes to make sure you're looking forward and that they're not covered…. As in covered by a cell phone or as in covered by holding a phone in front of your face because you're taking pictures, etc.. and of course, if you look out your window to the left or right too long, it warns you also…. Because obviously for your safety in the truck, you need to be looking forward and also not be asleep.

You may or may not know the above….. so sorry if that was obvious information but the difference in the glasses is the ability for them to see your iris's via the technology Ford is using.

When I purchased my truck, I was told two things by my salesman…. One that they're not actually cameras, but more of a special type of sensor and second that some people have learned to lean a certain way or to certain things to trick the sensors. His motivation for telling me this was to explain that Ford is not recording camera like information and monitoring me, etc… so I'm free to bang my wife, boobs a' jiggling, in privacy in there under the starry moonroof.

Wait, is GM really getting rid of Android Auto and CarPlay? That right there would be a deal breaker for me.

Yes.
My understanding though is it is more to do with Apple and by extension Google. I read Apple wanted greater access to the vehicle via the interface and GM told them to pound sand. Google then seeing how well it worked for Apple did the same.

Sure GM probably already wanted their own proprietary interface but Robot an Fruit pushed too far on their side as well.

Or that's my understanding.
This article (sole sourced GM interview) obviously blames Apple saying their integration was clunky.
https://www.popularmechanics.com/cars/car-technology/a69152435/gm-carplay/

It's also that GM has moved on from QNX in the infotainment system to running native Android, and eventually even more auto-specific HPC offerings from Google. The idea here is that you won't need Android Auto projection if you have an Android phone -- you simply pass off metadata (links, addresses, etc) from your phone to the center stack where it runs natively, rather than "projection" or mirroring from your phone. A similar change happened in the living room with google cast and airplay both now sharing data rather than actual projection. Remains to be seen how they will execute, but I have my doubts because I'm much too aware of their software capabilities.

ETA: but yes, in reality this is about data. A Ford exec told me the data is worth more than vehicle now and they've just not done a great job monetizing it yet. Yuck.

On the gm discussion, had a Buick regal over Christmas and was fooling around with the native nav system. I was surprised that it was completely INOP without a subscription. Like you can't even manually enter an address.

Likely 100% about the polarity, color depth, the color itself, and any mirroring. Lot of variety there, esp. sensors on colors/depth.

Or just driving old analog Porsches!

Bought my wife a 986. No bells. No whistles.

Mine now, since she bought her tech overloaded G80.

Which P do you have?

I have a 986 and a 996 Turbo. Both 2002 models.

Speaking of data collection, GM is getting sued by the State of Texas for selling insurance data to the likes of State Farm.

The lawsuit claims GM did not inform customers that their data would be sold to third parties, including insurance companies.

I can see you losing your mind when you finally get in a vehicle with a HUD.

It's gotten twisted, because of my tone, but really it was mean to just be a reaction to basically say "Please don't tell people something is horrible when yours is 10+ years behind in technology advances" - when you don't volunteer that info up.

In hindsight, should have just responded something along the lines of "Well it depends on your make and year model, because some are absolutely great. Technology has come a long way in vehicles."

10 years in technology, even if HUD's themselves have been around 100 years, is a long time in vehicle technology - and not all automakers have bad HUD's... some spend more time and care on their technology than others, and it really shows.

Example - The HUD in my 2025 F150 upper Lariet trim model is fantastic... has directions, colors, maps, speed limit, road conditions/tilt, towing, adjustable choices, you can move it around, rotate it, and it adjusts on brightness, etc.. ... but my buddy's 2023, doesn't have it, wasn't offered... because Ford just introduced it in 2024.

Probably. My car is almost 10 years old.

What kind of car?

My 14yr old BWM has an awesome HUD. In "normal" mode, it even has map overlay with road signs and turn by turn directions with lane guidance. I only wish it integrated with the factory carplay I retrofitted.

It's hard getting in other cars and actually having to look at the speedometer. BMW uses a camera mounted behind the mirror to take pictures of speed limits, and then displays the road sign in the HUD, so you also always know what the speed limit it. I use the heck out of that and wish I had it in my other cars.

Same on my 14 M5, love the HUD, but have to keep a cheap pair of non-polarized sunglasses in there to see it. And even that took multiple tries to find a pair that wouldn't wash it out.
