I've got a 2022 F-150 I ordered during the chip shortage. It took them 9 months to deliver it. Luckily it does not have the start/stop chip so it doesn't shut off when stopped at a red light. Anyway, I get an email today telling me the BlueCruise and Navigation features go away at the end of January. I didn't look at the cost of the navigation, but the BlueCruise is $49.99/month. I guess this is the future. I had no idea when I bought it that the features would go away.

GM brought in about $2B in subscriptions last year, mostly from OnStar.

This is why GM is getting rid of CarPlay and Android Auto. They want to force you into their proprietary ecosystem so they can bring in that high margin revenue.

It is until you can't find parts. Ask me how I know.

The automotive business model is really pissing me off.

I have a 2016 F150. I tried using Android Auto for a while, but for whatever reason it did not not like Waze or my android phone. Eventually just deleted it.

In 2021 I bought a new set of tires but forgot to replace the TPMS sensors at the time. The batteries ran out about a year later, so I have been driving around since then with the warning light on. This week I bought a new set of tires from the Goodyear service center. I remembered to tell them I wanted new sensors. It took them four hours to figure out how to reprogram the new sensors. They could not use their standard aftermarket sensors and had to buy direct from Ford. Of course, they didn't figure that out until they had already installed the aftermarket sensors and couldn't program them.

Ford BlueCruise requires a Connected Service plan that provides regular map updates, FordPass App, and modem activation. Ford BlueCruise-equipped vehicles come with either a 90-day trial or a 3-year BlueCruise Connected Service plan, after which purchase is required.

Your 3-year plan that was bought or included when the truck was purchased came to an end. Is there still an annual plan for $495/year? That is around 2 months "free".

There may be, I didn't look. I've probably only used it four times so I will not miss it.

I got a refund from Ford on my Blue Cruise equipped Raptor. They figured out that they couldn't get it to work right on Raptors for some reason. Got $795 back on the deal.

Bought my wife a 986. No bells. No whistles.

Mine now, since she bought her tech overloaded G80.

Have a 2025 F150 loaded, and it only came with 3 months bluecruise free. Pretty lame.

  • Monthly: $49.99/month (can be started/stopped).
  • Annual: $495/year (down from $800).
  • One-Time Purchase: $2,495 for 7+ years (not transferable).
The one-time as noted is married to the VIN. Can't transfer it.

It should also be noted that totally hands free (bluecruise) ONLY works on major highways anyways....

... and has zero impact on the adaptive/advanced cruise ('wiggle the wheel every 15 seconds) where it will keep you in the lanes, auto slow-down/speed up, smart cruise and all that... which you keep without bluecruise.

Yes.
My understanding though is it is more to do with Apple and by extension Google. I read Apple wanted greater access to the vehicle via the interface and GM told them to pound sand. Google then seeing how well it worked for Apple did the same.

Sure GM probably already wanted their own proprietary interface but Robot an Fruit pushed too far on their side as well.

Or that's my understanding.
This article (sole sourced GM interview) obviously blames Apple saying their integration was clunky.

I read an article in the WSJ some weeks ago now that interviewed the manufactures directly and it had nothing to do with Apple or Google. It's simply a revenue stream the autos are not getting that they want themselves, so they've thrown a ton of money at it to build their own walled gardens. And they admitted they are gambling on this because it will alienate many potential buyers, but if they all do it then everyone is pretty much in the same boat together.

I'm not going to pay for such a service so I'll just put one of those phone holders on my dash if I have to and continue using my phone map.

The navigation on my iphone is better anyway. I don't know what is included in the rest of that BlueCruise BS, but all I want is navigation and Sirius XM. Most of the remaining tech is useless to me. I never even use cruise control, much less self driving tech or anything like that.

The amount of nanny tech in new cars is exhausting. My wife's Telluride is a nice vehicle but the damn "Consider taking a break" alarm that comes on every 30-60 minutes on a road trip is annoying. I haven't checked to see if I can turn it off yet, but I don't think you can.

Another reason I've kept my 2016 longer than planned. It just has the minimum stuff that was out at the time and I can turn it all off.

If you don't even use your cruise control, I have no idea why you'd even open this thread or get involved. Goodness gracious man.

I can see you losing your mind when you finally get in a vehicle with a HUD.

HUDs are useless. I have one. It 100% blends into the background. I don't even see it. I literally have to concentrate to even notice it.

Sorry to hear that. On my F150, it's AMAZING.

Colored, super-easy to see, even has my navigation, towing and gauge info on it. Mine can even be moved around, rotated and has multiple layouts…. And it adjusts its brightness based on the light.

HUD's are kinda in the infancy, I'm going to assume yours is in the far lower end.

10 years?! That's huge gap in car tech from today…. Yeah, that's infancy big time.

This thread is about Apple CarPlay too…. Well those pics of me navigating using Apple Maps on CarPlay.

I probably wouldn't go around telling people HUD's are useless....

I probably wouldn't go around saying HUDs are in their infancy. They have been in cars since 1988. I thought the one I had in my '97 Grand Prix was pretty cool, sure it only showed speed, radio station junk, turn signals, warning lights, and whatnot, but there wasn't anything else to broadcast in those days. But they provided pertinent info without having to look down, which is the whole point. Today's are far better, but the concept hasn't changed in the 38 years they've been in select cars. You either like them or you don't I suppose, but they are not new earth shattering technology.

They were in military aircraft even before that.

Maybe the contrast is better now on the new HUDs. Mine is useless because it blends into the background. It has colors just like the example above but once you start driving it just disappears and I find it less of a distraction to see my dash vs trying to tease the HUD out of the environmental background.

Polarized sunglasses can also cause them to wash out in the older cars. Not sure if they found a work around for that in the more recent generations. A low-tech work around was to tilt your head to one side or the other which I'm sure still works.

What kind of car?

My 14yr old BWM has an awesome HUD. In "normal" mode, it even has map overlay with road signs and turn by turn directions with lane guidance. I only wish it integrated with the factory carplay I retrofitted.

It's hard getting in other cars and actually having to look at the speedometer. BMW uses a camera mounted behind the mirror to take pictures of speed limits, and then displays the road sign in the HUD, so you also always know what the speed limit it. I use the heck out of that and wish I had it in my other cars.

I simply meant it in vehicles (not aircraft) on what they can do, and are now doing, thanks to a ton of technical advances and connecting devices, etc.

If you never have to look at your dashboard and it's clear and vivid and not destracting - that's good evolution. That's what I feel I now have.

OLD huds'd versus some of them now, are night-and-day. My pics show that.... and my pics don't even do it justice, honestly.

I have a Ford F150, Lariat 502a PowerBoost big-bed package (basically has everything but the massage seats).

The speedlimit thing sign is super-accurate... at least to me... had it on my 2021 F150 Lariat before I upgraded (but no hud) and this one has it too, but now even on the hud (as you can see).

EDIT : The only time I've seen the 'speed limit' thing inaccurate is when I'm on some stretches of highway and it gives me bypass speed versus highway speed - but that's super rare.

OK, but something that has been in cars for 38 years is not in its infancy. Sure they show more data now, but that is a function of the data availability that has nothing to do with the HUD itself.

You told someone not to say HUDs suck, I'm saying that no technology that has been evolving for 38 years is in its infancy.

Ok, two things.

You're stuck on the word "infancy". I explained my context for using that word, clearly not the best word. We'll go with "HUD's have come a really long way in vehicles lately, thanks to huge technology advances in the vehicle".
Better?

And yes, I told someone not to say "HUD's suck" - why? Because he has a car over 10 years old. In technology terms, that's 'forever'. You want me going around telling people cruise controls sucks ass based on my 1979 Mazda RX7 viewpoint? That's the point.

So yeah, with him seeing the latest advances in it, he probably should hold off on going out of the way to tell people "HUD's suck", which quite frankly he did. It's not personal.
