Given the engine in the GX 460 has the same compression ratio as it does in the Tundra, why does it suddenly require premium fuel?
No need for premium fuel. I read around on the forums where many people always just use regular without issues. Decided to give it a try and have probably 50k miles of regular gas use only without an issue.
My wife daily's her 2015 (that we bought as a CPO) and it's currently at 120k miles. We've driven it to Florida multiple times (just did a spring break trip a month ago to Orlando), South Carolina, Colorado multiple times (summer and winter trips), Arkansas, etc. and really like it as a road trip vehicle. I bought a basket to put on the hitch for when we need extra cargo room and we rarely need the third row, but it's fine for an hour trip (I've volunteered to ride in the back when hauling friends around on wine tours).
Only issues I've had were belt tensioner pulley going out (squeaking and making noise so replaced at home) and the common valley pan leak that they get at around 100k miles. The valley pan wasn't too bad of a project and took me a weekend (also did the water pump, hoses, egr, another new belt, etc. while I had it all pulled apart). Luckily the leak was small so we just drove it (even took a road trip from Houston to S. Padre)and kept the coolant topped up until the winter time when I didn't mind spending 8 hours under the hood.
Overall probably my favorite vehicle to ever own. People complain about the gas mileage, and sure, 14-16 in town sucks, but set the cruise on the highway and you can get 19-21 or so.
