Talk to me about them. We are currently on the wait list for a 550, but I am getting tired of waiting and I'd much prefer the proven v8 and a cheaper price tag.

If we'd go that route it would most likely be a 23' year model. From what I can tell they basically have all the same tech as the newer ones just in a bit older format. Anything else I need to know that we need to consider in making our decision?

460 has better everything except for digital screens. We are on our second one, and will drive it until it's dead as there is no replacement.

I don't care about digital dashboards, as it is outdated as soon as it is produced in a vehicle.

Love our 2020. Quiet sturdy little tank (quiet and little compared to the Sequoia anyway). Sucks gas.

I have a 2023 that I bought 2 months ago. I love it. Admittedly it is my first luxury vehicle, but it feels VERY nice inside to me. I like having buttons for stuff. The tech doesn't feel that dated to me...I think cars are starting to look silly with all the giant screens. V8 is understressed. It's a beast. Third row is small but very similar to the GX550 space anyway.

Spend some time on the reddit LexusGX forum. Very knowledgeable group that as a whole prefers the 460 to 550

We're on our 2nd and love it. Will likely keep it until it's dead like we did with the first.

Very comfortable for people, good storage. My wife felt the grand wagoner was too long/difficult to park.

How long do you plan on keeping the car? With the 460 you can't beat the V8 and 6 speed reliability. That alone makes up for any gas mileage savings.

ETA: GX550 averages about 20mpg which is not outstanding at all considering the v6 and 10 speed pair. They look cool no doubt but forget that.

I've been in a 2017 GX since 2019 and it's my favorite vehicle I've ever owned. The thing is built like a tank, smooth quiet ride, handles great. Only downside is the gas mileage plus premium fuel also. The only real complaint I have is the lack of USB ports and lack of technology, but it's not a big deal to me. I value reliability over bells and whistles.

My wife is on the search for a new vehicle. She considered the GX550, Land Cruiser and 4Runner. We test drove all of them and we preferred the Land Cruiser much more than the other 2. Land Cruiser costs less than the GX550 and can be had immediately. The only real complaint I've heard about the Land Cruiser is the hybrid drivetrain.

only eats Premium gasoline...FYI. Lacks enough cup holders for a larger family, and not nearly enough charging ports.

Has air ride suspension versus a Runner. Tech in the 460 is ancient compared to basically every other auto brand on earth...but...personally, I've found I only features use the collision sensors, back up cameras, cruise control, seat warmers/coolers and apple carplay on a regular basis. Everything else is just a "nice to have".

Even the AWD/4WD is only needed 2 or 3 times per year...and often ever in those cases, it probably isn't really needed.

Reality is the big ass long wide screens look really nice, but while driving they are pretty useless except to maybe the front passenger.

I'm on the market right now. It's either 4Runner Limited 4WD, GX460, or the new 2026 Armada or Expeditions...because we really need a full size to be honest.

we are looking at the same vehicles. Wife has a 4runner now which we love but kids are getting bigger and she wants a 3rd row.

She wants the GX550 but I'm keeping options open as well with the new limited 4runner or the gx460. I don't love the idea of a turbo 4cylinder though in the new 4runner. I love the looks of the Armada but my wife isn't sold on a full size and it's a Nissan. The resale value is terrible and I'm just not sold on reliability. I grew up in a Toyota family and through all the years they've been excellent. Not sure I could stray from Toyota/lexus.

What does she want the 3rd row for? It is very small and uncomfortable for anyone in their teenage years or older and there is practically no storage space when both seats are used. It's also hard to get back to unless you have 2nd row captain's chairs (mine has a 2nd row bench, which I preferred). The 3rd row is nice to have for the occasional need, but I wouldn't count on it for daily use. The times we use it, we'll typically only put up one of the seats so the other half can still be useful storage.

For the 4Runner, we ruled it out because the interior felt claustrophobic. I'm only 5'9" and my head was almost touching the roof when sitting in the 2nd row. My wife is only 5'3" and even she complained about how tight the interior felt. That was why we crossed it off the list.

3rd row will be used for quick little trips when the kids have friends. It will be down for 95% of the time I imagine.
Hence, why we prefer to go midsize not full.

Given the engine in the GX 460 has the same compression ratio as it does in the Tundra, why does it suddenly require premium fuel?

We purchased a 22 Luxury CPO at the end of the year. It's my primary vehicle, coming from a 2017 Q50. Have put almost 10k on it for work and a bunch of trips up to Missouri for family stuff. Extremely happy with the purchase. Had been looking at most other midsized options.

Ride is great. Smooth and quiet. V8 power is good, not exactly sporty (there were other options I tested that were more sporty and responsive.) The air suspension is very nice and drives more stably in turns than the thing looks from the outside. Cabin is comfortable and typical Lexus feel. Have been okay with the cupholder and usb situation. Wish it had a little more storage options and didn't give so much space to the touchpad that never gets used. Feels like you are driving a full sized by the ride, but performance feels smaller.

Knew it was a step back in tech, but honestly there is nothing that I have missed. The Q50 had a bunch of stuff that I turned off immediately. didn't have to do that here. Even the wired Carplay is an upgrade, since I didn't have it in any form before and I always plug my phone in anyway.

Have had a few little things that are weird or annoying. Find it weird that there is a warning message about lane departure warning not working under 32 mph EVERY time you slow down. Remote start from the keyfob is a little hit and miss. Mine is not rolling down the windows from the fob - google says that you can have the dealer "turn it on for free" - will try that when it goes in next time, as I do use that feature.

The range and mileage has really been a nonissue. Not that much different than my last few vehicles. I am averaging around 18mpg on my normal driving in Dallas. If you stay at 75 or less on the highway you can touch 22mpg, I usually don't. Not great, but not terrible in my mind for a heavy vehicle with a V8. I have been using premium.

We rarely use the third row - wanted the extra space. Can certainly get a bunch of crap in it. Have used the third row a couple of times and the young adult normal sized folks that sat back there said it was comfortable enough. Practically zero storage left if the third row is in use, but that is pretty common. Stays in the two row configuration 99% of the time.

Still adjusting to the swing rear door. Like it sometimes. Have to keep it in mind if you will be loading and tend to back into spaces.

In my 4 months of ownership and 10k miles around town and a bunch of trips, we really could not be happier. Hope to drive the wheels off of it.

Blue star for you, I had an Expedition for a rental last year and the main thing I disliked about it was the screen that started at the gauge cluster and went to the middle of the dash.

16 and then 23 gx 460. Only problems with the 16 was replacing the door lock actuators and cracked radiator neck. Relatively cheap fixes. Very dependable vehicles and sold the 16 here after we bought the 23.

My only complaint when driving or riding in the front passenger seat is the lack of knee/ leg room beside the seat and center console. Compared to my F150, there's not as much leg room- especially on longer drives and trips for a 6'2 driver.

Another happy GX driver here. Comfortable, built like a tank, way more nimble than it has any business being.

My buddy with a 550 mentioned that the reduced fuel tank size for the 550 (21 gal vs 23 gal in the 460) is a real world issue. My gas light comes on when I have approx 4 gal left, usually at about 300 miles of range (17-18mpg). I can continue to push it if I am accurately tracking mpg and range since full up, which I do, but I assume the average driver does not. So people are filling up every 300 miles. 550 gets marginally better fuel economy with less fuel capacity, so plan to be at the fuel station often in either case.

No need for premium fuel. I read around on the forums where many people always just use regular without issues. Decided to give it a try and have probably 50k miles of regular gas use only without an issue.

My wife daily's her 2015 (that we bought as a CPO) and it's currently at 120k miles. We've driven it to Florida multiple times (just did a spring break trip a month ago to Orlando), South Carolina, Colorado multiple times (summer and winter trips), Arkansas, etc. and really like it as a road trip vehicle. I bought a basket to put on the hitch for when we need extra cargo room and we rarely need the third row, but it's fine for an hour trip (I've volunteered to ride in the back when hauling friends around on wine tours).

Only issues I've had were belt tensioner pulley going out (squeaking and making noise so replaced at home) and the common valley pan leak that they get at around 100k miles. The valley pan wasn't too bad of a project and took me a weekend (also did the water pump, hoses, egr, another new belt, etc. while I had it all pulled apart). Luckily the leak was small so we just drove it (even took a road trip from Houston to S. Padre)and kept the coolant topped up until the winter time when I didn't mind spending 8 hours under the hood.

Overall probably my favorite vehicle to ever own. People complain about the gas mileage, and sure, 14-16 in town sucks, but set the cruise on the highway and you can get 19-21 or so.

I want to add that we also plan on keeping this vehicle and handing it off to our daughter when she turns 16 in a few years. It's solid, dependable, and safe. I added a Hamilton CarPlay/Android Auto unit to it this winter for my wife and although it still uses the original old small screen, it's infinitely better with CarPlay for radio and navigation. For me this was also a safety thing, as my wife would look down at her phone frequently to check directions and I didn't want my teenage daughter to do the same when she takes it over. $500 for a Hamilton unit and only like a 20-30 minute install. My wife is frugal and was pissed at me when I bough it (no reason to ask permission, I knew her answer would have been "hell no") but after her fist drive she was thrilled I went behind her back and made the purchase for her.

Good info, I wasn't aware of the install on the Hamilton unit being so easy.

Might need to get on adding it to my '15, would make it much easier to have OnX up for navigating forest service roads when hunting/camping here in Colorado.

Because the GX460 has full-time 4WD.

I only put premium in our 22. That's what Lexus recommends. I plan to put well over 100k miles on it, not going to cut corners to save thirty cents a gallon or whatever. Just my personal opinion.

Heck, it's probably out in the garage still.
