I think the simplest answer to the original question was that there was very much a market for it. No matter what kind of car I'm looking to buy, there is a higher performance option available. Keep in mind too that GM, Ford, and Chrysler were some of the largest companies in the world at the time and riding waves of huge profits. The bean counters had yet to really come in and start standardizing everything as well. Chevy, Buick, Olds, and Pontiac all offered 350 engines, but they were all different designed by each division. Buick, Olds, and Pontiac also had 455s...but all 3 were different motors. Start moving to the mid 70s and you begin seeing discontinuation of engines and sharing amongst brands.

But for a brief few years as Warren Oates who played the character "GTO" in the movie "Two Lane Blacktop" says..."Performance and Image, that's what it's all about."

Engines in good shape. Needs suspension work. You can see in the photos she rides low. Needs shocks and springs. The top is in good shape.

The sound is incredible
The last thing I want to do is hurt you. But, it's still on the list.

OK fine. You seem really exasperated by this Cutlass. I'll be glad to take it off your hands...

My 442 (long story, developing) always rode low and has a nearly a "reverse rake" even with new suspension, I hated the stance and put air shocks in the rear so I could get the ride to look right. There were two holes in the rear bumper behind the plate where you fill up that facilitated the shader valve. lol.

Gunny,

My dad was an Oldsmobile Dealer for 44 years. I was fully immersed in GM culture. I saw once great companies mismanaged beyond comprehension.

Once I could drive, I spent lots of time after high school walking around your dad's lot and Dub Miller Ford next door drooling over the new and used cars.
