I have a mechanic buddy who says he will not touch any of the current or recent 1/2 ton gasoline trucks. This was in response to me telling him how much I liked the 2026 Trail Boss and that i was probably going to be in the market soon. When I asked him about Toyota, he said he wouldn't trust their most recent iterations either. Said if I get the Trail Boss to go with the Duramax, but I don't want to switch to diesel.
Hopefully I am not butchering this, but his argument was that the bigger gassers across all manufacturers are (a) built more "heavy duty" with more reliable materials or components, and (b) are more simple and time tested, without all of the fancy bells and whistles and 'turbos' and "fuel efficiency" features like "active fuel management" (disabling cylinders at certain RPM's) etc.
I was asking him about the various 3/4 ton gas engines and he said they were all great compared to the 1/2 ton options, but that he personally preferred the 7.3 on the f250 bc of power and torque.
Any input from the board? Any legitimacy to this? The fuel economy of any of these big trucks would absolutely suck, but if they truly are significantly more dependent, it would be an easier pill to swallow.
