Gas Engines - 3/4 Ton Better than 1/2 Ton?

I have a mechanic buddy who says he will not touch any of the current or recent 1/2 ton gasoline trucks. This was in response to me telling him how much I liked the 2026 Trail Boss and that i was probably going to be in the market soon. When I asked him about Toyota, he said he wouldn't trust their most recent iterations either. Said if I get the Trail Boss to go with the Duramax, but I don't want to switch to diesel.

Hopefully I am not butchering this, but his argument was that the bigger gassers across all manufacturers are (a) built more "heavy duty" with more reliable materials or components, and (b) are more simple and time tested, without all of the fancy bells and whistles and 'turbos' and "fuel efficiency" features like "active fuel management" (disabling cylinders at certain RPM's) etc.

I was asking him about the various 3/4 ton gas engines and he said they were all great compared to the 1/2 ton options, but that he personally preferred the 7.3 on the f250 bc of power and torque.

Any input from the board? Any legitimacy to this? The fuel economy of any of these big trucks would absolutely suck, but if they truly are significantly more dependent, it would be an easier pill to swallow.

I have a 2026 Chevy 2500 ZR2 with the 6.6 gasser. I am getting about 14 mpgs in mixed driving. It would probably be a little better if it did not have the large off-road tires and wheels on it. So far I absolutely love it. It is the plain old engine type with no gimmicks for fuel mileage. All the large displacement gas options from Ford and Chevy have good reputations as far as I have heard. The Ram 6.4 has possible valve tick issues if you do not use a specific 0w-40 oil, but the mpg's on it are in the 11s, or atleast the one I have would not get above that under any situation, and it too have cylinder deactivation, which can be turned off by fiddling with the gear selection by selecting 10th gear all the time. That will keep it in V8 mode all the time but must be selected each time you start the vehicle.

Your friend is right if looking at new gas trucks (Chevy and Ford at least). Heavy duty trucks get treated differently under CAFE and haven't been destroyed yet looking for every last drop of fuel economy.

But that changes soon. CAFE rules start in 2030 for heavy duty trucks, and by 2035, the almighty government says they should be at an asinine 35 mpg…

Also, I did find it fairly humorous that you explained AFM to the auto board.

2021 Tundra

You'll pay a premium for it (especially a low mileage, higher trim like 1794) but it'll last forever. The 2021 1794 will have all the bells and whistles (heated/cooled seats mostly) and you can get an aftermarket Tesla screen for it for wireless CarPlay.

Sorry, I thought the majority here drove base model pre-2020 toyota minivans that they bought all cash and might need a brief tutorial on modern ret@rded engine features.

The problem with the half ton gassers is the turbos, or the cylinder deactivation on the V8's. That leaves the Ford Coyote as the only reliable gasser for a half ton. If I were looking at a new half ton, I'd probably just go with the Duramax 3.0; it gets crazy mileage, even while towing.

Coyote has cylinder deactivation but it actually doesn't ingest itself.

True. Older coyotes didn't though. I still wish I hadn't sold my 2016

This is the kind thing that needs a tax deduction or credit. Improving the fuel mileage of an old truck and not creating new embodied carbon since an existing vehicle is being reused

They're not that difficult. I've helped another buddy do it. I think if I started in Friday evening, I could have it done by Sunday night with a helper.
