Understanding this is a first world problem, 986 Boxster with just over 100k miles needs a timiing job on both banks. Driver side 6 deviation and passenger side 9 deviation. Anything greater than 4 is out of spec. Passenger bank throws a code and rightly so. Probably too big of a job for me. Tough to do with engine in. Can't get it high enough to drop the engine and a highly technical job to remove the cams. Likely a $4k to $6k job at a shop.

Ugh. So, it sits.

Nothing to offer other than I can commiserate. Dropped a little over $10k on mine earlier this year for 1) oil leak, 2) broken A/C, and 3) new brakes. Labor is $200-$250 an hour at independent shops in my area.

Really sucked that all these repairs came up at the same time. I console myself with the fact that I love the car and maintenance is still cheaper than a new car payment.

Oil leak from RMS? Do brake work myself. AC would go to the shop but will tackle the blend door issue myself.

I'm not able to do any work myself. I knew maintenance costs would be high when I agreed to take the car. My dad keeps telling me I can trade it, if I want, but I'd rather keep it.

Reminder I need to sell my Porsche. I never drive it and it's taking up a garage space.

986forum.com has saved me thousands of dollars... I do my own repairs and maintenance. I've several thousand posts on there since 2017. Hobby.

However, when my specs start wandering... car may go. I've seen some great looking, and serviced, 986s on eBay.

I will get a price on Monday on the timing job.

I do too largely. Pulling cams and timing exceeds my comfort level. I have watched enough Jake Raby videos to know something could go amiss easily on that job.

. Auto.

Found it at a Mitsubishi dealership will 8,000 miles on it. Got a great deal. Here's a pic at the dealership. Got some wear on it since then. But still very good.

Thats a PDK. Still a manual guy, but that PDK is really a nice transmission if you understand what it does.

And it shifts faster than us manual guys. Calling it an auto transmission is technically not correct either, but we understand that sentiment.

I'm looking at getting another Porsche at the moment, and have spent several hours watching these and related videos.

What year is your 986, and what is the code it is throwing?

If it is 97-02 it is almost certainly the variocam chain tensioner pads

I bounce back and forth between a 996.1 in the 99-02 era to avoid bore score, but then you have the 5-chain issues with Cam deviation (like your 986).

I think I have settled on a 987.1 Base Cayman with the 2.7 - i've had 2 x 987 Boxsters, and a 718 Boxster.

No issues with bore scoring and minimal IMS risk, and better for my cold weather/short drive environment.

I think I can handle dropping the engine -- it is getting it back in without forgetting or smashing something that seems more daunting.

First, 2002 986. Yes the chain guides are likely partially in my oil filter. Even with the engine out, its a major job pulling cams on both sides, repacing chains and the new guides. Then the timing component.

Made the decision to part with it at a very reduced price. Really sucks. Fabspeed exhaust, Numeric shift cables, 996 shifter. Ugh. Code is P1341 I believe. Varicam deviation on passenger bank. Makes sense with a 9 deviation.

Base 987.1 Cayman started in 2006 I believe. That IMS bearing is the larger 'non-servicable' bearing. In truth, I recommend removing the factory grease seal from these so the engine oil can fully lubricate the bearing. Probably doesn't make sense until a clutch replacement (assuming manual transmission).

996 Turbo headed there to replace the Boxster. Rule 1.
