The only brown belts I have the hardest time with (blue belt) are those heel hook/knee bar specialists. They find every opportunity and then sink it in so quick I can't start the escape. Luckily they are all nice and never crank and let go if I try to escape the wrong way.

as a current 4-Stripe Purple Belt, I double check my professor when he walks in to make sure he doesn't try to pull the same stunt on me.
Congrats on your promotion! The best thing you can do now is to constantly badger your instructor to promote you to black belt.

It's cliche, but dont sweat stripes or belts. Just keep hammering.
About a month and a half in and still having a blast. I've yet to get my first submission, I hit a kimura and RNC but still learning what kind of pressure to apply so I kept it super light and they eventually got out. I was hoping they'd realize what I was doing and tap, but oh well.
I've been able to escape mounts and get into a side control on lower belts which alone is a great feeling.

Don't sweat it! Remember, all our opponents are also getting better too. They also have not needed to give their A game to you yet.
You will see all the benefits of your hard work when a few new guys join and you handle them with your months of experience.

Glad you're having fun! Don't sweat submissions, they're fun and probably the reason most people start BJJ. But at white belt, submissions are the least important aspect of your longer term development.
You've got the right attitude. The most important thing in jiu jitsu is your training partner...you dont get to play without them. So keep em safe.

Like I said previously, I'm also training in boxing at a different gym, so the bjj and boxing is definitely helping me cut weight. Starting boxing back in Sept at 195lbs and now at 166lbs. I roll with a lot of bigger guys, I find myself getting flipped semi often, working on my weight distribution and pressure technique, it's definitely an emasculating feeling having that done to me lol.
I'd love to try and compete by November, so targeting to get to 155lbs for lightweight. Starting going to open mats, will likely go to other nearby gym open mats for more exposure to different kids of opponents.

My gym mentioned there is a belt promotion day in June. How do folks know to attend? Do people get a heads up before hand? I'm not expecting any promotion of course, just curious how things like that work.

Haven't got to train much lately and was doing some hell rounds with a couple newer guys. Going about 20% just moving around and ill be dang if my guy didnt throw up a slick and immediate triangle on me. It was too late to defend and the lights were going out so I had to give him one.
I go to every ceremony as its part of being a team.
A friend usually slips it to the wife that it would be great if she was there, so she usually knows about a promotion before I do.

Generally the only people that know beforehand are those getting promoted to black belt so they can invite their families or anyone else they want to be there, at least at my gym. I don't know anyone that's gotten a heads up as far as getting stripes or other belts before the ceremony. Every time I've received a stripe it was a surprise, also a surprise when I got my blue belt. As OP said you should go, regardless of whether you know about any promotion of your own. Being part of a BJJ gym is being part of a community, the people you roll with and help you get better are getting promoted so it's important to be there and support them.
We give a heads up to students who are getting promoted so they can invite family/friends. Very rarely do we promote out of the blue and even then there's still some degree of planning.
Edit: yep, stripes are on a whim. Belts and Degrees are planned in advanced.

Caveat, my wife knows the deal about promotions so she shows up to many other ones which I won't be promoted at to both; be a part of my community and to not have her appearance be an obvious tell.

After getting promoted to black belt by surprise, I called my wife and excitedly told her and she just said "oh that's nice, can you pick up lunch?" (She was on painkillers at the time and was asleep). So I drove home with a new belt and Tex Mex.
But my instructor (now a coral belt) laughed and shared a funny story about his promotion to black belt and the casual nature of it and I felt better.

I had a fight stoppage in Vegas for blood & she was not happy.

I stay a little banged up to want to compete all the time. I had a horse fall on me last week...Steve in masters 3 ain't getting me like that.

So I unexpectedly got my purple belt last week. I was shocked. I just didn't think I was ready since my D is really good, but I have so much to work on with subs and closing gaps.
I'm a strong, athletic, high motor guy and feel of you took my strength away, then I'd have no bjj game. Sometimes I feel like my strength is more of a hindrance since I can use it to get out of bad spots and not rely on using bjj.
Maybe I'm just like most people after a promotion, feel like excuse me, you're crazy.
Cool note, my wife got her 2nd white belt stripe! She really picks things up so much better than me! I'm convinced that if I had her skill set, I'd easily be a brown belt now (been training for 8 years - but more like 6.5 sure to injuries and a 10 month layoff).
So if any of y'all upper belts near.Conroe want to roll it up and then either tell me I am a purple belt, or yea you suck, let me know!

Strength is fine. I think purple belt is where you figure out how to really be efficient with it.
I suck too but I deal with it because if my coach (or yours) thinks it time for a belt then I defer to their opinion.

Congrats on your promotion to purple belt! What you are describing is probably what 90% of folks feel like when getting promoted to purple and above. Trust your coach and enjoy your promotion!

Two weeks before I got married I was headed to jiujitsu and my wife was like, "NOPE!"
Years ago, I was traveling for work and dropped in at a school. Rolled with an out of control dude who left me with deep scratches across my neck, throat and part of my face.
I wasn't worried about my wife (she was already used to me showing up with bruises, scratches, etc.)....but explaining to colleagues was a little difficult.
Now, the first thing I look for in a training partner is smell and nails. And if they smell bad or have nails, they get to find a new training partner.
