Because I want to make all the Y-chromosomes in here shift a little more uncomfortably in their chairs this morning.
Had my 13 year old son experience this yesterday. Had surgery and still in the hospital but that's a different story. All is ok and he's still got his pair of bait.
But just some things I learned as a parent to pass along:
1. Your kid can wake up with this happening overnight (like mine did). Doesn't have to happen from an athletic event.
2. The extreme symptoms of nausea/throwing up/fever/discoloration/super high pain don't have to be there. He was in pain (5/6 - 10) and it was pretty swollen and sensitive…but that was it.
3. Six hours is the "cut-off" (pun intended). After blood flow has been fully stopped for 6 hours high likelihood hood that sucker is done. My son still had some blood flow though so even though (this was due to the symptoms not being as severe) he was at the 6 hour mark he was still good.
4. Texas Children's at I-10 and Barker Cypress: awesome! Surgeon Steve Canon: awesome! Every friggin nurse/medical professional we interacted with: awesome! Hell even the PA my wife and son saw at the urgent care prior to the hospital who told us to immediately book it to the ER: mega awesome! Don't come to me crapping on how bad our medical care is cause I ain't listening.
5. It's most likely to happen in adolescence to wake up with a torsion due to the body still developing and there can be other factors involved as well doesnt just need to be sports/alethicism. They also do a procedure where they permanently stitch both sides so this doesn't happen again whenever they need to do this. So now his nuts should be twist proof. Neat.
Since I had mentioned it earlier in the post he did have to stay overnight…that was due to: 1. Coughing up blood and 2. His blood O2 stayed too low and he had to go on oxygen.
Most likely these two things were unrelated. The blood was likely due to the breathing tube just causing a little more irritation than normal and also his uvula was pretty irritated one doctor had said so likely the blood was from that. Coughing after a breathing tube is always normal.
The low blood O2 could have been a number of things but all likely just related to either that's just how his body will respond to anesthesia…could have beeen due to his first time being put under….could have been an illness that was already happening….who the heck knows….but he got taken off oxygen around 7 pm last night and started improving exponentially once we started the IS breathing….also chest X-ray was clean and clear….
I share all this because first hand information helps. I'll share more regarding the laughs that insude from the anesthesia but I gotta get back to work.
