Elite pass rusher before we got him, good pass rusher while we had him, elite pass rusher after he leaves. Our d-line coaches did not coach up our NFL talent last year

We haven't coached up our talent in a few years. Hoping Elko figures out a way to address that!

Elko's d-lines under Jimbo were also terrible at rushing the passer. I'm no expert, But I think someone smarter said his base strategy is more of a contain and stop the run than a get up the field and possibly run out of the play. I also remember the SC game where we did get up the field and had easy sacks, only for the SC QB with crisco on his jersey to slip away for huge gains.

If Nic was truly on "cruise control", then I still would consider it a coaching issue. If player is not performing to the top of their ability, it is the coaches responsibility to get the effort from the player or make a change.

Would have been awesome if he showed up in our last 3 games.

There should be DIL penalties for that crap.

What'd you expect when we hired the DL coach and DC from the worst front 7 team in the SEC in Florida

Kids who have their NFL draft status decided and who are playing not to get hurt don't care what a coach says. And it's not like we had anyone else who was going to be any better than the half-ass effort some of our DL were giving.

Still unacceptable. We need to reevaluate who we're paying large sums of money to and putting out on the field if we have players hitting cruise control just to get through the season and get to the NFL.

You serious Clark?

If serious, both DL's this thread is about are examples. Plus both Bennett brothers, even more so Mike. Kyle Allen (while not an all-star in the NFL, a guy who couldn't even play for us manages a multi-year NFL career with a lot of starts). I guess you could put Tannehill in there too. A pretty good QB for us who turned that into a decade+ quarter billion career earnings NFL tenure. Ricky Seals-Jones is another.

This place never ceases to amaze me. The two defensive lineman that haven't even played in a regular season game yet are already NFL all stars? The only real nfl all star you mentioned is Mike Evans, and he was an all star when he played here.

ETA Michael Bennett made the pro bowl several times and was also good here

It's as if you think players' primary interest is winning, school spirit, and loyalty.

Not sure where you came up with "school spirit" and "loyalty" from what I said. I don't expect either of those.

I do expect players here to be interested in winning, like the players at winning programs are.

What do you mean by "decided"? He was a top 10 pick that played his way out of the first round altogether. Meanwhile there were consensus first round picks all over the country playing like… consensus first round picks. I don't follow you

What do you think a college player wants more between: (1) great personal stats/performance + a loss; (2) lousy personal stats/performance + a win? I realize there are other combinations, but your choice between these two will explain where we're at. Hint….players are in college to make it to "the league". (Or maximize their NIL if they fall short.). Winning is secondary. When a player is convinced his draft stock is solidified, he's going to shut it down, as we've repeatedly seen.

If you think Sean Spencer is a bad DL coach, you don't know **** about football.

He was great at Penn State 10 years ago but if we dont put up at least 30 sacks this year w/ Elko calling plays it will be telling.

We missed about 30 sacks last year because guys couldn't tackle. Hell, we missed at least 6 sacks against SCar. And there was that sack whiff against Ewers that resulted in a 30 yard run.

Our pass rush was plenty good last year. Our ability to actually tackle the QB and get the sack was where the problem was.

Who do you blame for that? the coaches? or the players?

Not sure on the coaching issue. Cashius Howell was the most consistent DL throughout the season. Scourton started off strong the first 6-7 games, but then just seemed to disappear after the Missouri game.

Glad he is doing well in the Pro's so far.
