OLB Wendell Gregory: Gregory, a redshirt freshman, tied a Big 12 freshman record with three sacks in the season-opening win against UT Martin. The 6-foot-3, 225-pound edge rusher transferred in from South Carolina this spring and has quickly made an impact. Gregory was also arrested after the opener on four counts of larceny for allegedly stealing $211 worth of merchandise from a local Walmart, but he has still started in every game since.

I would hope they gave him the chance to resign effective end of the season. He should not have been fired but if he didn't cooperate they may not have had a choice.

He did as well as anyone could do there and deserved to go out better IMHO.

Mike Gundy had a good run from 2005 to 2023, but he has lost 11 consecutive games to FBS opponents dating back to a 22-19 home loss to Utah on 9/21/2024. He is the 3rd head coach to get fired after Brent Pry and DeShaun Foster got fired by Virginia Tech and UCLA respectively 9 days ago.

"Father's shooting

In the spring of 2005, Kinne's father, who was also his coach at Canton High, was shot in the chest by the disgruntled parent of one of the players he coached. According to police reports, Jeff Doyal Robertson, the father of a player who had often complained to coaches and administrators regarding the way his son was treated, walked into the Canton Fieldhouse and shot Coach Kinne at point blank range. Robertson then fled in his pickup truck and headed east towards Tyler, Texas. Kinne Sr. was on the phone with another coach who was at another school when he was shot. Kinne Jr. was taken by police into protective custody, and then told that his father had died when in fact he had survived despite being given only a 10% chance to live. Robertson was later apprehended in an area north of Tyler near Interstate 20 where he had slashed his wrists in an apparent suicide attempt. Robertson was convicted of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon and was sentenced to 20 years in prison.[5]"

I was in high school the next town over when that happened. We got locked down while the shooter was running from police

Yep

Would be a phenomenal hire for them

He'd win there in that league

He's going to end up at a major p5 school with nil money. That guy can coach and people in coaching circles know it

They should have split ways with him in the offseason if this was where their heads were at. They were really bad last year and there were no signs or reasons for them to expect much better this season.

But Gundy's legacy is secure even with the inglorious ending.

Oklahoma State is not built for long term sustained success. Gundy's mistake was not leap frogging from Okie Lite to a bigger program that can compete for Championships like Les Miles and Jimmy Johnson did.

hard to call it a "mistake". He loved OSU and his dedication to the program is one I wish more coaches would imitate. It shows how dedicated he was.

Sad to see him go, but it was time for the program to move on. Best of luck to him.

Really good coach at the right place !

He really seems to hate NIL, much like Dabo. Might be expecting too much for him to change his ways

does he hate it, or is this more RIP T Boone Pickens?

OSU has one of the top 3 athetic revenues last year. He could have got his NIL if he wanted it. OSU is one of the richest remaining alumni basis in that league.

He said himself that he thought it was a fad that was gonna go away and this past offseason was the first time he tried to wrap his head around how to use it.

It would be. It would also be a dumb move for G. J.. he needs to wait for a program that has NIL money. A better program will call.

This NIL thing again... OSU is not any poorer than the rest of their Big 12 competitors, and the athletic revenues prove it, as they're right up there at the top. The reason for poor NIL is because Gundy refused to play that game until this offseason. If the right coach comes in, he'll have plenty of money to compete in the Big 12. They will never compete nationally again, nor will any other Big 12 school, but it's a great proving ground for an up and comer.

I think OSU is a great location for a coach to try for a Power 2 job. Texas has plenty of looked over 3-4 star talent that will go there, the alumni want to win, and the competition you face is crap. A good coach can use that as a stepping stone for a Power 2 job.

I think the entire state is a dump and would not wish that place on any coach.

Okie State is a clear upgrade, but Kinne's in a good spot right now and may get a better opportunity or stick around another year with their upcoming move to a new conference. I think most assumed he wouldn't still be in San Marcos this season as it is, but folks' bias against the school probably has something to do with that. I think his patience will be rewarded regardless.

You can never discount the power of a loss in the Turnpike Classic..

This year's loss to Tulsa was the last straw.

1986-1989
Gundy was 2-2 vs. Tulsa as a player

1990-1995 + 2001-2004
Gundy was 5-2 vs. Tulsa as a member of the OSU coaching staff

2005-2025
Gundy was 7-1 vs. Tulsa as a head coach

1. Virginia Tech, UCLA, and (eventuallly) Florida are all better jobs.

2. Oklahoma State does not have enough NIL money to compete....not even the in Big 12.

If things keep going well for us and CK leaves...I doubt it's to OSU.

Osu is not a great job anymore a second tier conf. If we finish in the playoffs Klein will have much better offers.

There will be better jobs for sure, but #2 is flat out wrong. OSU didn't spend NIL like the others because Gundy didn't want to do it. It's part of what got him fired.

That... and his 1-11 record since September 21, 2024 (0-9 in conference last year).

Yep. Apparently he said he still wants to coach but he seems to be in the Dabo class of "the game has passed him by". Maybe he can change his philosophy on the issues, but I have my doubts.

Aggravated assault with a deadly weapon? For a point blank pre-meditated shooting? That's some impressive lawyering.
