Kept saying it wasn't personal as he listed all the things that made Brian Kelly a terrible choice for LSU football coach. Anybody with average critical thinking skills knew that when he was hired, and he's done nothing since then to prove them wrong. Just up front a terrible human being to work for or work with. As I recall, LSU started with a long list of established coaches as candidates and eventually settled for Kelly after they had been rejected by all of them. Kelly was seen as a WTF hire at the time by virtually everyone, and they appeared to overpay for him just to reinforce the illusion that they got someone everyone else wanted.

Admittedly, this is the first time I've heard about the details of how BK is a garbage person (outside of the whole story about a person dying because of him, which is horrendous on its own).

I was very surprised to hear the extent to which BK was willing to go to cover his own hide whenever trouble struck his team. Willingly throwing his own people under the bus and posing as some tough guy by crapping on his own staff members on camera during games are insane.

Somehow, I knew people's hate for the guy was justified, but now I get why so many people hate him to this degree.

Staff members?

So you haven't seen him crap on his players... BY NAME... after a loss?

I have. Straight up blaming 19 year old kids for losing.

He's an absolute JACKASS.

My understanding is he's the type of person who's rude to waiters.

I don't care how old you are. These are professional athletes. You are 100% open for criticism. They're millionaires

Yes, BK is an arse, but I don't fault a coach in 2025 to calling out players

In the three seasons prior to this year he's had two 10 win seasons and a 9 win season and he's played in a SEC championship game. This season was an obvious regression but it's not like he's been terrible.

Kid was a student manager. Kelly made him keep filming on a scaffold or cherry picker(can't remember exactly) while there were extremely high winds. Kid was thrown or the apparatus gave way and killed the kid. No way should he have been allowed to be in that elevated position during a wind event like that.

I just listened to that. Hats off to Josh Pate. I don't think you'd ever hear that kind of take from any other outlet (self-parody types like Skip Bayless nws). I wasn't that tuned in to Kelly's regime, but JP's account makes so. much. sense.

He did that largely with the remnants of a national championship team that was top to bottom one the most talented squads within memory, supplemented with access to the incredibly rich Louisiana talent pool. It takes a special kind of coach to regress at LSU with all the built in advantages they have.

This is a stretch, if not pure anti-Kelly propaganda. And I am hardly a Kelly fan, thinking he was a terrible fit for LSU.

First, LSU was a full 3 years removed from their championship year when Kelly got there. The guy, Burrow, that led the way was long gone. Second, O's last 2 years at LSU were .500 both years. The 2021 team had 10 players drafted, including 4 in the first 3 rounds. In 2022, Kelly's first year, they had 6: only one was higher than the 4th round. Third, Kelly didn't regress. Other than 2019, O had one 10-win season and a 9-win. Except for his best three years, he was barely over .500. Kelly was over .700 at LSU with 2 10-win seasons already. He neither had the players from 2019 nor were they quite as talented, at least early on, as the previous regime. If they were talented the last 2 years but didn't perform, that is obviously on him. But you can't say he only won with other guys' players. He won a lot of games at ND with his players.

Should he have been fired? That's for LSU to decide. Is he an *******? Probably. Was he a bad fit and relegated to 9 and 10-win seasons? Absolutely (at least in bad fit; arguably in the record). But don't make stuff up. The poster you responded to was 100% correct.

Supposedly same year a female student committed suicide after being assaulted by a Notre Dame player. LSU board had mentioned it, and first I had heard of it. Supposedly Kelly had some unflattering comments but haven't had time to google everything.

Brian Kelly at Cincinnati was known to throw players under the bus in the press when they didnt do well. The way he left Cincinnati also was in poor taste from what I remember. Coaching is a tough business but I cant think of any one near the unlikability of Kelly.

Did you see what Pate stated about the A&M fan base pertaining to hiring Elko?

Basically propped us up and gave us all the credit for keeping us from making the Stoops hire.

I love Josh Pate and I am a huge fan and I look forward to listening to the commentary this morning on my way to work. However, Josh Pate has always supported the Kelly hire at LSU when everyone else knew that it was a horrible fit. He went on and on about how he was an amazing coach. I look forward to listening to the segment this morning.

Nobody talks about the Greg Brooks Jr situation and LSU media will do their best to push it under the rug, but to summarize it… Greg Brooks Jr was a safety for LSU and Kelly and had trouble for a couple weeks at practices, eventually fainting. The medical staff told him it may have been vertigo and cleared him and coaches told him he was in jeopardy of losing his starting spot if he kept missing practice. A brain scan a few weeks later showed he had a brain tumor and would need surgery. During said surgery he suffered complications which would go on to leave him permanently disabled. After a hospital visit days after the procedure, Brian Kelly went 17 months without reaching out to Kelly or his family and would even go on to lie to the media about seeing him and being there for him. He told the media Brooks was walking again when at that moment he was still in a wheelchair. Just a simply heartbreaking story that further shows how awful of a human being Kelly is.

You look at this firing, and the Franklin firing. Two coaches that had decent records but never managed to get over the hump. And then they have one year that REALLY didn't meet expectations. Gone!

This new era of NIL/portal is changing the equation in ways that are not yet fully appreciated.

Sark "physically annihilated us" (Elko's words) and was a play or two from the national title game the last two years, and yet we're convinced he sucks too.

In my mind, it's not that players are too fragile to be criticized, but the HEAD COACH is responsible for everything - penalties, missed blocks, motivation, losses, wins, etc. The best coaches say that everything falls on the head coach. Blaming a player (or calling out a player for poor performance), is just passing the blame. Are you in charge, or not?

Not sure if it's revisionist history, but he said he's been softening on Kelly the last couple of years because it became apparent how toxic he was making LSU and that he was kind of checked out. He supposedly didn't like what he was hearing from other people instead the program. He really laid into him, but again, maybe revisionist history

On a different thread yesterday an Aggie said he was the pilot on a Delta charter flight taking the Cincinnati FB team home. BK was the coach at that time.

And that everyone on the plane hated BK.

This! They wanted a splash hire and paying BK a fortune made it so. Well said!
