We all know it's from tea sippers, but where did that originate?

And the precise relationship between tu and sipping tea?

WWI/WWII Aggies were off fighting the war, while whorns were sitting at home sipping tea.

White collar vs blue collar. Sipping tea is pretty white collar.

Unless we have an archivist that has historical documents that can elaborate, I always assumed it was pretty straight-forward. When TAMC started, it drew agricultural, engineering and military minded students, very working class etc. When TU opened, it was co-ed and drew liberal arts, white collar professions etc. The clash of cultures between the two was stark, so simply not a hard leap to assume "tea sips" referred to this dynamic.

When they make the hookem sign it looks like they are sipping tea with their pinky finger extended.

Not true. I despise the teasips as much as anyone, but they cannot be criticized for their involvement in WWI and WWII.

Vietnam era was when they showed their true colors of anti war

From Director, UT Heritage Society at The Texas Exes

Jim Nicar 1915: The Cactus Tea Room. Before UT Austin's Texas Union opened in 1933, the Cactus Tea Room was an unofficial center for campus social life. Designed by two UT architecture professors, and with cactus leaves and gargoyle faces carved by Austin's own Peter Mansbendel, the Tea Room stood on Guadalupe Street just across from the West Mall, next door to the University Co-op. However, a private business, student banquets, dances, faculty meetings, and luncheons were common here. The Cactus Tea Room closed in 1929.

Regardless of which story is correct, Texas Aggies used the term tea-sip (also spelled teasip, t-sip, or t sip) (aka. Aggies) to belittle the well-to-do students of t.u. The University of Texas was traditionally the "rich" school that pumped out doctors, lawyers, and the like. A&M was a blue-collar school that traditionally taught Agriculture and Mechanics (engineering).

In A&M's mind, a tea sipper was a condescending term that perfectly defined the culture at Texas. But the Longhorns took the term "teassip" as an Aggie compliment, not an insult- referring to Texas as a place of culture and good taste.

Tea-sip (or t-sip)
A student of Texas A&M's archrival, The University of Texas at Austin. The term is intended to be derogatory (the origin being that while Aggies were off fighting wars, students of UT Austin were "sipping tea" at home).

True story: when I was at A&M, I was at a party in Austin and convinced a UT coed the the hook'em sign was actually the way that eunochs used to greet each other in Ancient Greece, with the two folded fingers designating missing testicles. Admittedly she was pretty drunk at the time, and I always regretted the fact that I had not used my persuasive skills more to my benefit, but I was still proud of myself.

Apparently olepiss fans willingly use "sip" to refer to themselves. (TIL'd that in the last SEC Shorts...probably related to "Hotty Toddy"). It's like they're genetically enhancing themselves to maximize detestability.

Either that or they can't spell Mississippi…

But from what I gather in the OM vs MS State dynamic t-sip could also be an accurate description of the Rebels.

As previously mentioned, Sip is a nickname for Mississippi, and "The Mighty Mississip" (river). And Hotty Toddy comes from the heated cocktail, known as a "hot toddy," such as a hot buttered rum. Very good on cold mornings before a football game or fox hunt. Old South traditions.

T sip dovetails with the concept of male/male teabagging - not that there's anything wrong with that.

Sip away.

Tea sippers. If you take the horns and turn them to the side, it's how you'd sip tea if you were wig wearing red coat.

At the height of the anti-Vietnam war protests, while on the 40 acres visiting an old high school friend who was a student at tu, I was tear-gassed as a just-passing-through innocent bystander…. Twice….

It was very different from what I was accustomed to back at A&M…

I find this assertion extremely dubious.
The best way to keep evil men from wielding great power is to not create great power in the first place.

The teasips used to say it was "culture vs agriculture".
Funny thing is that I always took that as a compliment.
