The NCAA and its member institutions want you to know that gambling is a terrible addiction, and bad for their sports. However, The University of Arizona just renamed Arizona Stadium to Casino Del Sol Stadium.

Almost like they're talking out both sides of their mouth.

Texas wasn't involved in this. Cincinnati had been holding on to this card for a good while, and played it to bolster their lawsuit against the kid walking his contract with them

When you look at the timeline, Cincinnati is in a very vulnerable position with the NCAA regarding their knowledge of Sorsby's gambling and their failure to report. It would be incredibly stupid for them to turn him in. Likely scenario is that it had to be a school that was outside Sorsby's orbit that turned him in, one that could not be linked to him in any way. It had to be a school that would benefit from the chaos. Possibly a school that has a history of running to the NCAA when any other school starts to encroach on their territory. I wonder who that might be....

What evidence is there that he got "turned in" by a school? Perhaps someone he knows on campus, or elsewhere, tipped someone off.

Do we know? The article said, "according to sources," he bet on Indiana... Cincy, as an institution, wouldn't know that unless someone who knew the kid told them. It is just as likely someone who knew he was going into rehab talked.

Besides, why would it be "incredibly stupid" for Cincy to turn him in, if they did? If they just found out about it this spring, what blowback are they afraid of?

When all the dirty money began flowing through college sports for paying players to entice them to come and play at a particular institution, coupled with gambling opportunities growing exponentially bad things are going to happen to student athletes.

College sports across the board; in my opinion , has taking a big hit on its soul, meaning and purpose as early as this season. Bowl games were simply not the same to me this year. No pagentry, no historical value, too many "brought to you by"…….the same outcome as an over commercialized Christmas. It has no value to me….except maybe at the moment in time I watch a game….but there is no legacy value.

Along with that case, Texas Tech president Lawrence Schovanec also stated in a letter to the Texas Tech community that the school plans to appeal the NCAA's ruling.

"We believe that given the facts and the context of Brendan's case, the NCAA's ruling should be reversed or modified," Schovanec wrote. "As a generation of college athletes face the legalization and rapid proliferation of sports betting in our country, gambling addiction is rising to the point of epidemic among college aged men in particular. The NCAA's stated mission includes "fostering [student-athletes'] lifelong well-being", and they have claimed their goal is to promote a "culture of care" for student athletes' mental health. Gambling addiction is a clinically recognized behavioral disorder."

This far from over.

That's a REALLY poor look for a University president to be advocating for a transfer QB who has a gambling problem, NOT an addiction or condition like it's some type of cancer.

He should be focused on academics and the plight of the average student, not an overhyped paid glorified football players. But I guess it's par for the course, technical gonna technical, I'm sure a xfer QB from an 8-4 Big 12 school was going to win a CFP game.

no one expected the NCAA to reinstate him. That was always a lock to lose.

The lawsuit is what to watch. He should also lose that, but courts are crazy these days.

If scumbag harbaugh can get off Scott free for having a minion spy on opponents on a championship run year, I can see a scumbag judge granting an injunction to allow sorsby to draw this out so he can play.

If there is money to be made here, sorsby will play somehow. If tech's sugar daddy has no friends or cachet that matter, he won't play.

You can always count on tech to embarrass itself for sure.

In this version of America, there is almost always a judge somewhere that will permit worship at the alter of the dollar, in lieu of regulation and elementary ethics. If I had to WAGER Sorby's will make millions playing football, this fall.

Are you saying that gambling is not an addiction, or that tceh's pres is saying that? It 100% is an major addiction. It has for sure spread like a cancer across the industries targeted demographic. When pared with the marketing of it by universities and sports media it is the nadir of institutional ethics.

Are we to expect that the gambling industry is targeting young men in their mid-20s by chance? A group of people whose brain development is not complete, particularly the prefrontal cortex which handles impulse control and risk assessment, is an accident?

the problem with the president's statement...

the best thing for someone with an addiction...is to get them as far away as possible from the situation / environment that led to the addiction

Whatever, it's a fake "addiction", it's not a medical condition. Porn, gambling, those are choices individuals make. If you have a gambling "addiction" the cure is pretty simple, free and available to anyone….. stop gambling.

As for the technical QB, he should lose his case, if he doesn't the NCAA should appeal but I think they are growing tired of fighting individual battles in local courts and their focus is on Congress right so to enshrine their authority over eligibility.

I guess you've never known an addictive gambler. It's bad, absolutely ruins lives and gets people killed.

With that said, that's why it's important to ban Sorsby from playing. Once you've gotten in deep with gambling, youre compromised and dishonest with the game you play because you're either betting on yourself or being forced to change outcomes due to debts

Please educate yourself on what addiction actually is to include gambling addiction. Gambling addiction like a substance addiction actually manipulates the brain's reward response aka dopamine. It is the first purely behavioral addiction formally recognized by the American Psychiatric Association.

You clearly have no idea what you're talking about. You're very fortunate to never have dealt with these" fake addictions."

Alcohol, porn, gambling. Drugs. It's all the same to the user. Some kill you, some don't. Some you can do in secret, some will cost you your job, your family, or even worse with death.

Do yourself a favor. Do some research so you can sound more educated on the subject.

Here's the thing. Gambling addiction is not the reason the NCAA is specifically banning him. It's bc he bet on the team he was playing. That's the one thing that gets them to actually take action.

Reports on Dallas radio today (via ESPN) are that he placed 40 bets on Indiana football in the 2 years he was there (24 games) and bet at least $90,000 all using gambling accounts registered in other people's (friends and family) names. Allegedly his wagering continued through much of the Spring semester once he got to Tech.

He's a victim.....

In a May 16 statement to NCAA reinstatement staff, Sorsby wrote that the "bets made me feel like I was supporting the team when I was not playing in games, much like fans betting on their hometown teams to win. It was a way to make me feel more connected to my team when I wasn't playing. I always bet on Indiana to succeed."

Unable to see he has a problem, lying about why he was doing it, inventing ways to access his bets. Putting other people and their careers in harms way.

Brandon Sorsby squandered his NIL earnings, collegiate career, and NFL future by continuing to gamble after transferring to Texas Tech in December.

Real Talk is that this is probably happening on more teams than just Tech. It's a funny headline since Tech got caught but I'm willing to bet(lol) this is more widespread than not.

I have a feeling it is very widespread. I read an article a long time ago about college basketball players involved in point shaving. I wish I could find it again. They got in debt and started shaving points to earn money to pay off the debt.

Hopefully the Sorsby story is a wakeup call for other guys placing bets on these apps. I think that's part of the reason it is really important for the NCAA to ban Sorsby, make sure that it is publicly known that if you do this, and get caught, you are done.

It's a question of the integrity of the game, but also of protecting these young athletes from themselves by making sure that this particular red line is enforced to keep them from falling in deep with bookies/organized crime etc.
