The Student Bonfire people have never cared about any laws before.. Why start now. I doubt they care what the judge says.

Quite simply the most asinine thing ever posted on this site, and my friends, that's saying something.

Maybe individual A&M clubs should hold their own "small" Bonfires around Texas and across the country. I have the land and the trees to donate up here in the NW. It would not hold a candle to the Bonfires of the past, but would at least give me a chance to show my burning desire to beat the hell outta tu.

And you wonder why there is such bitterness between the corps and non-regs.

EDIT: spelling

I doubt the guy who made the non-reg comment wants a % roster of who's participating in SB.

You are a dumb. Especially since most likely the guy is at least somewhat older, given he's a judge, and thereby more likely that he was a CT.

People don't care being called a non-reg... it's the fact that your example had to be a non-reg. That is all. If you don't understand why that would piss people off - you've had your head in the sand.

Ahh, guy.. Nobody has a "problem" with being called a non-reg (why would anyone?). It was the negative stereotypes you associated with it.

It appears that after last years attempt to screw Bonfire, Simms is trying harder this year. Last year he tried a last minute attempt to stop Bonfire. SB has a board and an attorney and they were not stopped.

This year it appears that he is trying to screw Bonfire early. To my understanding, there has never been a "mid-August" deadline. Think about it, if it was an actual deadline, why would he call it a "mid-August" deadline. Don't you think it would be an actual date?

We do not need to make too many assumptions though, the Reds are dealing with this right now and an update should be soon to come.

When are the students going to register to vote down there and start electing some people to stand up for them?

The real issue here is that Sims, like every other elected official in the county, could care less about screwing over students. Students need to vote. They won't give a crap what you want until you get out and do something about it. Right now, they care about what the voters want. Not Student Bonfire. Show them that their continued term in office will be helped by their alignment with students and you will get what you want more. If nothing else they will at least think a little more before they screw everybody over.

Start with resolve not to vote a straight Republican ticket. This guy is part of the party establishment in Brazos County.

Come up with the mindset that you always don't have to vote for "the party of God."

Voting a split ticket is the first step toward an informed democracy.

Most people don't vote here because they either don't care or don't spend enough time here to really feel like they can do much. The issues in Bryan should have been enough to get students at least registering themselves to start making a difference in College Station and the county. I guess it's going to take CS actually directly screwing the students before people feel like doing anything.

And from what I've seen/heard about Bonfire... this wouldn't be the issue to rally the student body in full.

If there is a group pushing bonfire every year why is the submittion of the proper paperwork a problem? If we had do to it for the last three or four years why would this one be any different? They( those resposible for organizing the event)know the stuff has to be turned in, prepare it at the beginning fall camp, turn it in at the beginning of the semester or his deadline or the actual factual deadline or whenever. If we have the stuff turned in and all the i's dotted and t's crossed, then he can't say anything about it. He can however shut it down due to the dry conditions.

that rain was not nearly enough to solve the problem here, the grass still crunches when you walk on it and that ain't good. we would most likely need a LOT of rain between now and then before the ban is lifted

we also have to remember he isn't voted to that position by the university or it's students, it's the citizens of Brazos County, of which I am one for about six years now, that he is more concerned about, you know, the ones that actually vote in this county so he could care less if he pisses off a bunch of, students, non-voters and people not registered to vote in this county

by the way, no i didn't vote for him or anybody else for that matter, and yes I want bonfire to burn high, bright and long

We don't know enough yet.

What if the other parties to those "contracts" Sims referred to were not cooperative?

I hate conspiracy theories. However, if the county government seems determined to shut down student bonfire, it might be easy to help the students miss a deadline -- thereby making it look their fault in the public eye.

This is the primary period in which Student Bonfire raises the majority of its funds. How easy will it be for the organization to go out now and solicit donors?

There may be more than what meets the eye here.

That last paragraph is enough to make me depressed for the rest of the day.

By and large you hit the nail on the head. If one quarter of the students who voted for yell leader voted in local elections students could EASILY elect every single official in city and county government.

Students don't care about local gov't so local gov't doesn't care about the students, it's as easy as that. If you think that elected officials are going to placate students simply out of some sense of fairness you are delusional. Elected officials (I don’t care what level) respond to two things, money and power. Unless you threaten either of those, you have no leverage.

(as I posted on the General board)

What I gather is that there must be relationships established and prior communications with the fire and police departments in order for the event like Bonfire to take place, and the deadline to start arranging those relationships was in mid-August.

I am going to assume the relationships have to do with scheduling fire fighters and police ahead of time, as well as traffic plans and other considerations. The Judge believes that without those relationships currently established, the Bonfire cannot burn safely.

The kicker is that Student Bonfire didn't know that they were going to burn in Brazos County until recently, so making arrangements there was not an issue. It is the same as, for example, Tarrant County saying that they would arrest anyone cutting down a tree without a permit. Cut isn't in Tarrant county, so Student Bonfire didn't need to get permits for those cutting down trees.

It apears that, at the last minute, the previous non-Brazos county burn site owner's lawyer put up some prohibitive roadblocks that forced Student Bonfire to stack at a second site; which happens to be in Brazos county.

Those Brazos county "relationships" that were non-issues before are now big issues.

Short of finding a third burn site out of the county, I can't imagine a proper solution to this quagmire.
