On Friday, Texas A&M soccer will continue its non-conference schedule, bringing a 2-1 record into a clash at Baylor. Head coach G Guerrieri joined TexAgs LIVE to speak on the upcoming match in Waco as well as last week's brief homestand.

Key notes from G Guerrieri interview

  • We started off with the game at home vs. Denver, and we did everything right except put the ball in the net. We missed a couple of pretty easy chances. They scored three goals that were difficult. They beat us on the break, and the last one got a good counterattack after getting a good tackle on Allison Lowrey. They turned around and went 75 yards on the counterattack. We had a couple of good chances and hit the crossbar a couple of times. Looking at ourselves in it, we had 19 shots on goal and hit 12 of them. Denver was a good team.

  • That was the biggest thing: What can we do from Wednesday to Saturday to get there? We knew we’d have a big attendance on Saturday. What could we do to give the freshman class a good first impression?

  • In the first half, we went up 3-0 with three big-time goals. Mia Pante with an unbelievable blast from between 29 to 32 yards. She cut to the right and shot an absolute laser beam. A few minutes later, we got a free kick that Sydney Becerra took. She was able to bend it around their wall. Margo Matula was able to score with a header off of a corner kick. All in all, a total switch around from the disappointing performance that we should have won on Wednesday. Now, we’re set up to play a big game on the road against Baylor this Friday.

  • Baylor is 3-1. They'll be motivated to beat our team. It's a huge rivalry match. The intangibles go so high when you talk about the familiarity of players knowing each other growing up and the rivalry between the two schools. There's a little bit more on-edge that happens during the game.

  • They're a team that plays. They're good at setting up chances and restarting chances on freekicks. They've scored a lot in corner kicks and free kicks. It's going to be a big challenge. When we played them at home last year, it was a 1-1 tie. So we will have to play them as well as we did on the road when we played Lamar. It's an 8 p.m. kickoff. Hopefully, it will be a little cooler and make it better for us to maintain pressure on the ball in the Texas heat.

  • Our next home game will be next Thursday, September 5, against TCU at Ellis Field.
