It's red because they wanted to end the behavior immediately. Giving a yellow wouldn't do that. Same for spitting. You can't make that yellow. It's auto red. And spitting is almost nonexistent nowadays.

People should look up some of the racist garbage thrown Vini Jr's way since he's been at Real Madrid, in many cases by the fans. It happens to plenty of other players but he gets a lot of the attention given he's a high profile player at a big club.

That's what created this. A Benfica player covered his mouth and said something to Vini Jr. Vini claimed it was a racist remark but it became he said/she said. This wasn't the first time the hand cover made it hard to determine the truth on this stuff. So IFAB decided they had enough and wrote the Law change.

Everyone knew what the consequences were. Doesn't matter what you say. Cover your mouth in a confrontation with another player and it's an auto red.
