Clippers are saving about $30 million in luxury tax with this trade.

Patrick Beverly could never escape the large shadow that Eric Bledsoe had cast on the Grizzlies basketball court. It's like no matter what Pat Bev gave the city of Memphis, the Grizzlies fans always pointed out that Bledsoe wouldn't have taken that shot or turned the ball over or pushed that player in the back. Bledsoe's time as a Grizzly probably was a big reason why Pat Bev isn't in Memphis today.

Filed under related to Memphis and the NBA:

Two big hires in Memphis this week as Rasheed Wallace joined Penny Hardaway and Larry Brown on the Memphis Tigers staff.

Bonzai Wells joined an HBCU located in Memphis.

And any deep NBA fans will connect Rasheed Wallace, Bonzai Wells and periodic Memphis visitors Zach Randolph and Damon Stoudamire to one infamous team in the early 2000s.

No news if JR RIder or Ruben Patterson will be coming to town.

From the FO that brought you the cancelled trade due mistakes on which Brooks (Marshon or Dillon) was supposed to be involved in the trade, today's announce of Culver and Juancho Hernangomez actually features Willy Hernangomez

Since Ja Morant has been out for 4 games, the Grizzlies have the largest win in NBA history and a 4-game streak where they have never trailed nor been tied after the opening score.

It should be noted the 4 teams were the Kings, Raptors (missing starters), OKC (missing starters), Dallas (missing Luka, KP & starters)

Xavier Sneed signed and playing against Spurs due to COVID.

He is the 7th Xavier to play in the NBA. The Grizzlies have had 5 of them.

One of the answers to why Memphis is cursed with poor free throw shooting.

The seasonal bump that wasn't bumped last season:

Steven Adams out for year.
Brandon Clarke out for year.
Ja Morant out for at least 25 games.
Marcus Smart injured in preseason.

Starting 2 two-way guys, a 10-day, and there are only 2 healthy guys from the main roster. 13 main roster guys on the injury report. To get to 8 guys active for the game, 3 guys are 10-day contract guys.
Just one injury report isn't enough.

Not surprisingly, lost by 40 with most the Celtic starters not playing in the 4th

Farewell 2023-24 season. Memorable for the injuries and expensive viewing of G-Leaguers and 10-day guys.

Loss today with just one player who appeared in the season opener in October, and just two players who were even in the organization as of February.

The team featured NBA-record number of Grizzlies players (33) and starting lineups (51). That number does not include Steven Adams who never played for them this year.

Highlight was the development of Vince Williams and GG Jackson.
Also seeing the Core 4 at Marc Gasol jersey retirement

Former Latvian player/Memphis Grizzlies/ORL Magic player found dead of suicide (likely).

He was divorcing/divorced from his wife and did not have a relationship with his dad, his former coach, who found out about the news through a news site, and was hopeful that the story was not true when asked.

His ex-wife Anna Sedokova

After losing to the Warriors in the play-in game, the FO has the following consequences ahead of them as they prepare for the Kings - Mavs winner.

WIN the game, and go play the #1 seed with a hobbled Ja Morant. 1st Round draft pick goes to Boston this year.

LOSE the game. Keep their 2025 1st round draft pick.

Does not get pushed to a future year if they keep it.

Pretty good shout-out.

I was at the Mavs Griz play in game, and while winning, it felt like I was drinking whiskey and eating 5 Reese's. It was fun while it lasted but we all knew that hell was coming and it wasn't worth it.

I blame Nico. The grizzlies should be out today if not for him.
(And yes, when Nico was walking out before the end of the game, even some Griz fans chanted "fire Nico")

Grizz fans have to look back to the 1956 playoff series between the Minneapolis Lakers and the St. Louis Hawks.

Despite losing a game by 58 points, the St. Louis Hawks won the series despite a -56 point differential.

The Hawks beat the Lakers 116 to 115 twice in the 3-game series.

How would you handle this offseason for the Grizz? Would you give JJJ the supermax?
There actually is a Grizzlies thread just for Iowa.

But I think they are in a tough spot. I think he can get 30%, not the 35% supermax since he didnt win the DPOY this year. His previous one was too long ago.

The problem here is that JJJ is always there, always in shape, always plays hard, but they are already overpaying Ja Morant and Bane. And those three as your three best players is never going to win a title. Plus JJJ seems to not play well in the playoffs at all. 16/5 with 0.5 blocks on 38/27 shooting this year.

Edey, JJJ, Wells. Bane, Ja with Pippen, Clarke, Kennard, Santi seems good on paper... but that's probably a 2nd round team every year at best. If you give him that 30% deal while paying Ja and Bane 25%, you get to the aprons pretty quick. Santi and Kennard are FAs this year.

I maybe hope that Trae wants out and no one wants him so you can try to fleece a Ja for Trae deal.

I think JJJ will make the All-NBA 3rd team, but maybe not, he may fall out of the awards. The Supermax almost guarantees he stays in Memphis, but given the guy drafted right before him got traded this year, who knows anymore?
I think the difference for an extension this summer is $345 mm/5 years (Supermax) or about $147 mm/4 years (based on current salary). Therefore, if he doesn't earn All-NBA, he will play out the year and hit free agency.

So the Supermax is an expensive way to guarantee that he will return. The Marcus Smart trade was about extending JJJ.

Ja is extension eligible. Who knows what the cost is for not extending him, and while Daryl Morey likes to spend money on broken athletes, I don't think Kleiman and Pera will. Ja is so good, but the team will likely never have to Supermax him since he won't ever get to 65 games.

My belief is that Pera is willing to go into the luxury tax once he sees a promising post-season run, and that hasn't happened.

As bad as things got this year, the Grizzlies offense-missing two key role players-put up 77 points on the Thunder in the first half of a playoff series (before Ja was injured). I'm not sure how many teams scored more than 70 points in a half against the Thunder, but this team is so hard to evaluate because they frequently have multiple guys injured.

I think JJJ will get the Supermax, they will try to retain Santi Aldama, and fill in the non-rookie roster spots with minimum salary vets, and when you play in Memphis, you are near last on the destinations for free agents.

Luke Kennard will be somewhere else next year, and if nobody else wants him, maybe Marvin Bagley Jr returns.

I think they bring the coach back, and if Taylor Jenkins does not end up on the Spurs, there is a scenario where I could see him being the Knicks or Kings head coach.

And while I doubt anyone reads this far, there is a very loud whisper that Robert Pera will move this team to Seattle as the expansion talks have hastened his willingness to maximize return on his investment and Seattle would benefit from not having to go through the expansion process.
(The source also tells me Google is moving from California, and surprisingly not going to Texas but either West Tennessee or Eastern Arkansas).
