From a development standpoint you can't ask for better vets than CP3, Dame, and Jrue in back to back seasons.

Gotta pump the brakes on his floor being Bruce Bowen. 8x All Defense and 3pt champ would be an insanely high floor.

I think he will play more than the consensus. >1000 minutes

I think that's a fair floor. Bruce Bowen only had a spot in the league because he fit the Spurs system and the way the game was played at that time.

Bowen averaged 6.1 ppg for his career and never averaged making more than 1.3 threes per game. We (me included) romanticize Bowen's role on this early 2000s Spurs teams, but he was a below replacement level player before he got to San Antonio at 30, and only worked out with us because we could put 3 hall of famers around him to compensate for his lack of offensive production.

So saying his floor is Bowen is just saying that his floor is a guy willing to give max effort on defense and be a net positive to winning even if the offensive game doesn't develop.

But Bowen was 2nd in DPOY for 3 straight years, top 5 for 5 straight years and top ten for 7 of 8 years.

Carter's floor as a defender isn't that high. But being an All-Defense 1st team defender is certainly a ceiling for him.

Bowen fit our needs perfectly, especially since we had to fight Kobe, but we will be thrilled if Carter has that impact.

I do think he very well could play that role of spot up and defend only, and I'm totally cool with that.

His floor being Bowens impact offensively, sure. But defensively, his floor is lower than being an all-time great perimeter defender

Wild as it is, just after seeing summer league, I'm sold that he could be just as annoying on defense as Bowen was.

If he gets to stand in the corner on offense and save energy for defense, there's no reason his floor isn't super annoying defensive pest.

The thing is that everyone switches now, so the days of Kobe vs. Bowen are kind of over. Teams will just screen you and force a switch to get you off their alpha dog scorer. It was notable during the finals because Indiana had a dude fighting through almost every screen so he wouldn't get switched off SGA, but that's playoff level intensity only to fight that hard. During the regular season we just don't see duels anymore between stoppers and scorers.

So with that said, I'm looking for deflections, ball pressure and opportunistic steals out of Bryant. That's elite defense these days, and if he does that, he's a net positive when he's on the court and this (in my mind) at a Bowen like level of being one dimensional but still a contributor.

I'm on the side that Carter's NBA minutes are down this year unless we move Keldon at the deadline. I just think the spurs will be conservative with him and choose to give him game time reps in the G League. Hope I'm wrong and the kid makes it impossible not to play him in NBA minutes

Fox-Castle-Vassell-Barnes-Wemby is my favorite lineup from the players we have. I'm picturing lots of steals/turnovers turning into Fox/Castle/Vassell fast breaks.
