Why is it a sophomore team if it is all freshmen?
I am not familiar with larger districts, do they generally have 3 teams?

Used to if the freshman were really good they'd go to the JV team or even varsity. Sophomore team was made up of the kids that weren't as good (sophomores). The rest of the freshman just stayed ion the freshman team.

Our sophomore team is better than our JV. There are 2 sophomores on varsity and 3 freshmen on JV.

Does his organization not have all stars? Ours runs until the end of June.

Because they sometimes have kids who are sophomores who aren't on JV but are on the sophomore team. At least that's how it was explained to me.
As far as I can tell most 6A schools will have 3 teams. Varsity, JV, freshman/sophomore team. Some schools I've seen will have just label their sub-varsity teams as both JV and differentiate with color.

I would say if a player is not in high school yet and the coach has locked him into a position the player needs a new team. Especially if he is not playing any OF. Every year we will have a sophomore or sometimes even a junior not make varsity because he can't play OF. We have played seven games this year and my son has played RF, 2b, 1b, and SS.

Honestly, 2 months off from competition isn't a bad thing. Especially if he's going to also be doing camps and such during that time. Let him just do other 7-8 yr old things other than baseball.

Do any of y'all know if there is a good place in the Austin area to find high end gloves other than the big box stores like Dicks?

Really good advice, encourage your kids to be happy playing and learning multiple positions when they are young.
A little anecdote as my son is nearly done with his senior season. Starting in his soph year he has been primarily a catcher and was the varsity starter last year and coming into this year.
He tore his meniscus at practice on January 27th and had surgery soon after which removed the torn area. Luckily with that injury it can be a fairly quick recovery, however he was not allowed to do any squatting activity (i.e. catching) for about 6-8 weeks after surgery.
Our season started March 1st and he has been in the lineup every game for his senior year due to the fact he was a versatile player who had a lot of experience in other positions growing up. Has played RF most of the season up until the past few weeks when he's been able to get back behind the plate.
Team is an Oklahoma 6A state title contender and is finishing regular season this week currently 27-7 and 13-1 in district. Really excited for what the next two weeks have in store!!

Little update on the boys, we've had a clean sweep through the postseason so far and won a 3-2 nail biter today to advance to the 6A state championship game in Tulsa tomorrow. Edmond Santa Fe (35-7) v Owasso (39-2). Go Wolves!!
For all you dads with 10 year olds out there tell them to keep working! This has been the experience of a lifetime for my son, cannot wait to see him out there tomorrow!!!
