Why is it a sophomore team if it is all freshmen?

I am not familiar with larger districts, do they generally have 3 teams?

Because they sometimes have kids who are sophomores who aren't on JV but are on the sophomore team. At least that's how it was explained to me.

As far as I can tell most 6A schools will have 3 teams. Varsity, JV, freshman/sophomore team. Some schools I've seen will have just label their sub-varsity teams as both JV and differentiate with color.

Used to if the freshman were really good they'd go to the JV team or even varsity. Sophomore team was made up of the kids that weren't as good (sophomores). The rest of the freshman just stayed ion the freshman team.

Our sophomore team is better than our JV. There are 2 sophomores on varsity and 3 freshmen on JV.

That's odd. But it was a long time ago that I was in high school. I would think you wouldn't be playing against very good competition on a sophomore team. Not a knock on your team but I would think the kids would be at least on the JV team if they are better than those players on that team. Maybe politics involved. Heck our varsity coach when I played had the athletic director's kid hitting DH as a junior on the varsity batting sub .100. And our young, married assistant coach was fooling around with a sophomore high school girl (and he ended up marrying her later!). So yea things can be squirrelly in high school sports.

It's definitely odd the way the coaches construct the rosters and dole out PT. There are kids on each roster who started almost every game but didn't hit .200.

All I know is the Sophomore team and JV scrimmaged several times and the Sophomore team won each time pretty decisively. The best pitcher on JV was a freshman who was clocked up to 89 in his last outing. There are 5 freshmen, including mine, who sit in the 80's. The kid who hit 89 is about 6'1" 160 and still growing, another is 6'3" 195'ish and done growing but will fill out more (he was on JV too), another is about 6'2" 145# (he'll probably grow another inch or two based on projections and fill out), one kid is 5'11" and probably done growing (he's 4" taller than his dad and his mom is pretty short), and mine is 6'1" 205 (still going and should be 6'4" by the time he's done growing). The 2 sophomores on varsity pitch a lot and are sitting 87-89 too. For the 2027 season I expect to have 6 arms throwing in the 90s.

The only team we lost to, Pearland, has 2 kids on the SBA Bolts National team and another 3 on the Wildcatters Scout team.

Basically, we played 3 good teams (which also have really good JV and varsity so there's nowhere for the freshmen to move up- Kingwood, Atascocita, and Pearland) and one decent team (Pasadena Dobie). But it really didn't matter in most games- we have 24 on the roster and they'd play a completely different lineup in the district games and still run-ruled almost everybody.

In the case of us and Kingwood the Sophomore teams and JV teams would beat all the other varsity teams in our district except Summer Creek, Kingwood, and Atascocita. The Atascocita sophomore team was decent but thin on pitching however, their JV team is really strong even with like 3-4 sophomores on varsity. Kingwood and AHS tied for the district title and Summer Creek was third. Goose Creek Memorial was 4th.

Any good ideas for summer play in the north dallas (frisco-prosper-Celina-little elm) area?

Son is finishing the season in 7u, heads to 8u in the fall. Would like to keep him engaged over the summer. Not finding much in the way of leagues over the summer. Slotted into two camps so far but not or like to keep the competition going over the summer

Does his organization not have all stars? Ours runs until the end of June.

Honestly, 2 months off from competition isn't a bad thing. Especially if he's going to also be doing camps and such during that time. Let him just do other 7-8 yr old things other than baseball.

I don't know of anyone playing in July/August at that age. I'm sure there are a few select tournaments, but no league.

Thanks yall. Just want to make sure he's not missing out on something somewhere that could give others a leg up.

I agree with the idea of a break too

We are at a 6A in Oklahoma and it is same setup. Varsity, JV and Freshman/Soph team (they call it JV2).

I would say if a player is not in high school yet and the coach has locked him into a position the player needs a new team. Especially if he is not playing any OF. Every year we will have a sophomore or sometimes even a junior not make varsity because he can't play OF. We have played seven games this year and my son has played RF, 2b, 1b, and SS.

Really good advice, encourage your kids to be happy playing and learning multiple positions when they are young.

A little anecdote as my son is nearly done with his senior season. Starting in his soph year he has been primarily a catcher and was the varsity starter last year and coming into this year.

He tore his meniscus at practice on January 27th and had surgery soon after which removed the torn area. Luckily with that injury it can be a fairly quick recovery, however he was not allowed to do any squatting activity (i.e. catching) for about 6-8 weeks after surgery.

Our season started March 1st and he has been in the lineup every game for his senior year due to the fact he was a versatile player who had a lot of experience in other positions growing up. Has played RF most of the season up until the past few weeks when he's been able to get back behind the plate.

Team is an Oklahoma 6A state title contender and is finishing regular season this week currently 27-7 and 13-1 in district. Really excited for what the next two weeks have in store!!

This baseball season in DFW

Two tournaments rained out and a third tournaments bracket day rained out.

Last week we beat two good teams in pool play and had a great path on Sunday. Of course it's rained out. We get a good draw for poo day this weekend and of course Rained out.

We're down ~14 games this season.

We've yet to have a full tournament this season. We either get rained out or delayed starts. Tomorrow we are down to one pool play and single elimination Sunday. Not even worth traveling for.

Do any of y'all know if there is a good place in the Austin area to find high end gloves other than the big box stores like Dicks?

I have not seen much of a selection at D Bats. There used to be a place in Houston that had a great selection called Barcelona. San Antonio used to have a place called Team Express. I am looking for place like those that have a broad selection of gloves to try on.

We always order direct from Wilson's website. Better selection, custom options, and quick delivery.

My 10u squad shuts down from June 20 to September. Then light fall league from September to mid November. We don't pick up a baseball until late February. Breaks are super important for the body and let them be kids. Go play something else and broaden your athleticism
Im looking for Ray Finkle.... and a clean pair of shorts. Im just a very big Finkle fan. This is my Graceland, sir.

Yep. I think 9 of the 11 kids play flag football in the fall and all of them play basketball in the winter. First couple of weeks in March are rough but everyone is super excited to get back at it. Come end of June everyone is sick of baseball....well, mostly everyone. There are a few psycho's out there. And I say that in a positive way.

Just Gloves is a great online retailer.

I have used a distributor out of California for 10+ years to purchase all equipment (20%-30% off retail) for my boys. In fact, I just purchased a new A2000 glove last night from him.

Shoot me a DM if you want me to put you in contact with him.

Thanks, I may follow up on that, but for right now I am looking for a place where he can pick up the glove and put his hand in it to see how it feels and if he likes it.

Little update on the boys, we've had a clean sweep through the postseason so far and won a 3-2 nail biter today to advance to the 6A state championship game in Tulsa tomorrow. Edmond Santa Fe (35-7) v Owasso (39-2). Go Wolves!!

For all you dads with 10 year olds out there tell them to keep working! This has been the experience of a lifetime for my son, cannot wait to see him out there tomorrow!!!

Checked in today. I'm currently sleeping in a bunk room with eleven 12 yr old boys. Prayers appreciated….

On another note, a team last week got booted for having a 14 yr old using his little brother's Birth Certificate. How do you spend that much money to come here and cheat?!?

Wild. Someone on the team probably ratted them out. Zero chance you can keep a secret with 12-13 families.
