Nah, just avg-ish offense that relies on BA over SLG, much like last year. Having more on-base threats will help, but needing clutch hits can be tough to rely on. Walker looks good in the eye test, but the sliders were tough on him tonight.

Smith seems like he knows his zone, can't wait to see him square up on a pitch.

It's a long season.

The Astros were 3rd in BA (.262), 7th in OBP, 8th in slugging (.418), and 8th in OPS last season. Those numbers are good across the board, and reflect half a season without Tuck so only half inflated by MVP caliber offense we've replaced with much cheaper players.

It's hard to say we're relying on BA over slugging when we're 12 for 58 the first two games (.207). We haven't hit for average or power yet.

Our team ISO (SLG minus BA, a more direct measure of power) was 17th in the league. Our high BA buoyed both our OBP and SLG. We didn't have a bad offense, just one that relied on getting base hits. We didn't walk much (27th in BB/game). I'm hopeful the walks will tick up but we'll see how much the additions affect our power output.

I just want to see our guys each have to stand in the batters box and watch a pitcher throw nothing but strikes and sliders into the opposing batters box. Put a metal post 6" outside the plate opposite the batter and let him swing away at anything he thinks is a strike. After letting the ringing stop in their hands after swinging at sliders out there for the 10th or 15th time and hitting that post instead, maybe they will start thinking twice about reaching out and trying to pull those pitches. If they were swinging to slap them into right field it would be different, but we insist on trying to pull those kinds of pitches.

Going tomorrow with the whole family all in Astros' jerseys riding my 8-game, 3-year streak.

Yikes. I couldn't watch last night but that's crazy inconsistent.

At least it didn't seem to favor one team or the other, but the inconsistency was really pissing off batters (understandably).
