Here is one way to look at it. When calculating WAR, there are positional adjustments. It's based on historical data and decides which position is more difficult. If you play a tough position, you get a boost; easier position, you lose some points.
I think this changes over time, but roughtly here is how each position is graded.
Catcher: +12.5 runs per 1,350 innings (a full season)Shortstop: +7.5 runsSecond Base: +2.5 runsThird Base: +2.5 runsCenter Field: +2.5 runsLeft Field: -7.5 runsRight Field: -7.5 runsFirst Base: -12.5 runsDesignated Hitter: -17.5 runs2B > LF by a significant margin.
