The crazy thing is the way Detroit is collapsing down the stretch they may not have to. Don't get me wrong, I have no confidence in this team right now but they could easily get in going 4-1 over the next 5.

Going even 4-1 will be damn near a miracle for this team. We have no offense.

I think that Correa blew off Joe but I don't think that's 100% a sure thing from that video

But I don't really need video to know the clubhouse doesn't respect Joe. Seems really obvious

It's an odd feeling knowing that this pitching staff could go out and pitch 4 games of 1 run baseball and we'd stand a good chance of not winning one of those games.

They were having a long chat in the top of the 9th, so I don't Correa blew him off. I think it was more like Correa said he was done with the conversation.

5. A manager and hitting coach who demands guys work the count. Refusing to work the count is the #1 problem this team has in my book. They've turned themselves into singles hitters because when they do get hits, they're hitting balls the pitchers want them to hit - the ones that a pitcher knows they can't drive or pull. Thus so many instances of 1st and 2nd with no outs becomes no runs because nobody is patient.

This x1000! It isn't just how it affects the pitches we get to hit, it also affects our own pitching when our guy throws 25+ pitches in an inning and barely gets a chance to sit down in the dugout before our hitters go 3 up/3 down in <6 pitches. Pitching is already fatiguing enough in the pitch clock/2x through the lineup at full spin/max velocity era, we don't need to make it worse by not giving guys a real chance to rest between innings.

And it's 100% a coaching philosophy. For whatever reason our hitting coaches are refusing to preach patience at the plate.

I guess I'm rooting for the Jays and Springer this postseason. My order of preference for a championship would be (with the current standings):

Jays
Brewers
Guardians
Tigers
Padres

Phillies
Cubs
Red Sox

Mariners
Mets

Yankees
Doyers

The other possibility is that the hitting coaches are preaching it and the players are just not listening to them, ergo the coaches we have are ineffective. In either case, the fix is bringing in new hitting coaches that will preach it and hopefully the players will listen to them.

Honestly ID*** about working a count.

If a pitcher throws you a strike put a GOOD swing on it and drive it. You're supposed to hit strikes.

That's one thing I've noticed about Carlos since being back. He doesn't get cheated on swings. He may swing and miss but he's ready and if he's swinging it's often times a quality swing.

We take too many flailing swings at non competitive pitches. It happens when guys make up their mind early that they're swinging without putting any effort into identifying the pitch. IMO that's a result of pressing. You go up thinking 'I've got to get here' and as soon as you step in the box it tuns to 'I've got to swing here'.

Be selective and don't get cheated. That's the approach I want to see.

It's easy to bail on the team as the slump hits terminal velocity, but just remember, most of us are here because we love baseball and love the Astros. Even if they don't make the playoffs, you'll be missing them soon, so stick around these last few days. The older guard among us felt this way just about every season, by the way. The Astros made the playoffs when I was 6, 7, and 12 as a kid, then not again until I was 23. I was 30 before they actually won a playoff series.

And if they do fall apart the rest of the week and this bunch doesn't make it back to the WS until some distant day where we're all a lot older, but likely none the wiser, I think we'll still be OK having lived front and center for the greatest decade in Houston sports history.

The more pitches you see from a pitcher, the easier it is to identify what is coming. When you see 1-2 pitches per at bat, it is easier to get fooled and end up flailing at pitches well outside the strike zone. Part of it is that many of our hitters are not good contact hitters. So instead of still making contact and fouling off pitches where they get fooled, they swing and miss. Easier to stay alive and work a longer count when you can spoil pitches that fooled you and get another chance.

I also think the stat line posted right above this explains at least some of what is happening to our hitters. They are getting hosed by the umps at a rate that is only equaled by SF, and SF's pitcher get it back with the most generous ump treatment, while our pitchers get squeezed too. If you start an AB with a pitch outside or below the zone called a strike, you can't be patient and expect that future pitches in those locations will be properly called a ball. We should be one of the teams that benefits the most from ABS next season.

Absolutely. I have been harsh on the veterans and coaches this year, but iI'll still be in WPB next spring.

If Cintron is still here, I'll take him a copy of Ted Williams' book on the science of hitting, lol.

That's part of the thing I've been wrestling with: I'm pissed they aren't playing well, but I'm trying to soak up whatever is left of Astros baseball this season.

We have 5 guaranteed games left -- and we have something to play for. I remember many years where we were out of it by August. Success is hard to sustain as players age or move from team to team. Even after all the success we've had over the last decade, all the adversity with injuries this season and Houston Oilers dysfunction, the Astros are still fighting for a playoff spot. I'm mad, frustrated, saddened, yet hopeful because I love this organization, and I refuse to get off this ride.

I don't think the golden era is over. I think it is just on pause -- with the team in need of some retooling and leadership change.

The July run gave a lot of us false hope because deep down, I think a lot of us knew that this is a fundamentally flawed .500 team. I mean, Dana going into the season with an all-RHH lineup? Pinning our pitching dreams on players coming back from major injuries? Losing two key offensive cogs of recent playoff runs? We got some good replacements, but injuries have really taken their toll.

Only one team stands as the champion at the end of the year. I don't think the Astros will be the last ones standing, but we have a little glimmer to get the opportunity to try.

So tonight -- I'll be where I usually am on nights during the spring, summer and early fall -- sitting in my chair, Astros on TV, cursing the lack of hitting with RISP or griping about balls and strikes to an ump who can't hear me, because like many of you -- I haven't gotten off this ride for nearly 50 years and refuse to do so now.

Some sacrifices are worth it. This offense isn't one of them...

Back in the late 90s/early 00s when the Rockets dynasty finally ended and Hakeem hung it up, my buddies and I used to play the game of:

Imagine going back in time to talk to yourself in say, 1991. And you tell yourself, in the next 8 years,
the Rockets will:

Set a record for the most wins to start an NBA season
Hakeem will win MVP and Defensive Player of the Year the same year
We'll beat the defending WCF (Phoenix) in a 7 game series
We'll win the West
We'll win the title by beating the friggin Knicks
We'll eliminate Utah in Game 5 on the road
We'll eliminated Phoenix in Game 7 on the road in a series we trailed 0-2 and 1-3
Hakeem will dominate David Robinson to the point of being liable for his complete mental breakdown in a series
The Rockets will repeat as champions with a sweep
The team will trade for Clyde Drexler, Charles Barkley, and Scottie Pippen (who sucked)

The Astros list of 2015-2024/2025 obviously would dwarf that list, but it's a good lesson in humility and being a grateful sports fan.

I wonder who our next Generational Astro (a la Altuve) is going to be, hopefully he's already on the Earth by this point.

Need to get him at least a few more bites at the postseason apple to try and get him the PS HR record.

I've been stupid busy and unable to watch or post for many games the last week or so, and I hate both the fact that I haven't been able to watch AND that it would have been a waste of time anyway. Maybe the next 5 games will be better, but I'm not optimistic.
