I'm on the minor rebuild while keeping the core instact. Cut the fat and get younger acquisitions (no 34+ first baseman or retread pitchers)

Pena, Correa, brown, Yordan, Altuve, Cam, Paredes, Javier, Abreu, Hader, Arighetti. Thats the core IMO. Anybody else is up for grabs

I respectfully, but vehemently, disagree. That is the "reload" mentality that led to this warm bucket of dog poop. Altuve and Correa are not the players from championship years, Yordan cannot remain healthy, and Javier and Arrighetti are not TORPs.

I mean, that's fine if the goal is to sneak in as the #6 team and somewhat stay in the race until September... like the Giants or Cardinals. You are not winning anything with that roster, however.

Not really a rebuild on any level as the only remaining fat after your list is guys no one will touch because of their contract (Walker).

First priority is to extend one of HB or Pena. Whoever you can't extend (which might be neither) is fair game in a trade. From there I think it just depends on who you get back and how close they are in terms of other moves. Peña is the more obvious trade candidate given Correa can move back to SS and Paredes to 3B.

Win today and hope the Tigers continue their skid. Then you have 3 against the Angels. They are always the cure for what ails.

September has not been kind to guys holding bats. Of course you knew that.

Jake had a horrific September.
.204/.271/.204. Yes his BA is his SLG. No xBH. His OPS a whopping .475. As bad as he was though, he ran laps around Sanchez.

Sanchez
Since the trade .194/.270/.328 fWAR -0.1
In September .204/.218/.188. Yes that's right slugging .188 and an OPS of .406. He shouldn't have been allowed to bat at all. Seriously. He shouldn't have been playing. He was that bad. He has 3 HR and 3 SB for us. Last year in Miami he had 18 and 16.

He's been a bust. Nice smile. Awful player.

Walker
His season OPS is down to .695. His season fWAR is 0.7
Home he's been awful. .202/.283/.342. September has been worse. .221/.259/.338. That's a sub .600 OPS and he's got 30 K and 3 BB to go with it.

The GOAT. .197/.269/.366. OPS .635. He was the best of the 4. That's how bad the other 3 were.

I don't think we're sitting in the corner. We're throwing punches. They just aren't landing. Our lineup right now lacks power and lacks the ability to string together hits. It's not the best combo for scoring runs.
W
How long do you want to ignore this user?
the lack of power is astounding on this team

Altuve is the only player to reach the 50 x-base hit mark

50 - Altuve
49 - Pena
48 - Walker
43 - Yainer
36 - Paredes

I can't bring myself to cheer for making the wildcard. What we saw the last 2 games is exactly how any wildcard series would go for us.

You essentially need to win today and sweep the Angels. Hope the Tigers go 2-2 over their final four. I don't see that happening. The more likely scenario is you lose today when Framber picks his inning to implode, then you maybe win 1 or 2 against the Angels. Short of the Tigers losing all of their next four I put our chances pretty low. Boston will probably start resting guys once they can no longer catch the Yankees for home field in the wild card.

the Astros are 22-26 vs. the AL West

not a comforting mark moving forward

two years ago...the 'stros were 32-20 vs. their division

Watching the Mariners last night, I know it was the Rockies, but they look primed to make a deep playoff run. We saw it up close last series. If we snuck in I have no doubt we go up to Seattle and get embarrassed for 2 straight games and a quick exit.

Our season run differential is +7.

Cleveland's is -2. Yep. Leading their Division with a negative RD.
agproducer
How long do you want to ignore this user?
I can choose to be negative or choose to be hopeful.

Are the playoffs probable? No. Are they possible? Yes.

There's too much negativity in the world around us, and even when the Astros suck, baseball is still an escape. So, I choose to remain hopeful, even if the playoffs are not probable.

And even if they make the playoffs and get smacked around, at least we had a few more games of Astros baseball this year.

regarding the AL playoffs...

MLB & TBS will be pulling very hard for the Yankees and Red Sox to advance

any combination of Seattle, Toronto, or Cleveland in the ALCS = tape delay potential
Ag_07
How long do you want to ignore this user?
You're probably right

But from a baseball standpoint I think a Toronto v Seattle ALCS would be a lot of fun. Two teams with potent offenses and Seatlle with their pitching.

That 7 game series would be a lot of fun to watch.

Such a weird feeling. 2016 was a long time ago. But that was the last time we failed so miserably. We're spoiled.

no, not yet anyway.

This organization has been in the playoffs consecutively since 2017. You don't immediately tear the team apart like Crane did when he bought it just because you miss the playoffs for the first time in 8 years. A lot of dudes on here need to take a step back and calm down. Yes, the season has sucked but they were "in it" all the way up until the last few games of the season.

And to be frank tearing it down like Crane did back in the day is not a fool proof method of getting the team back to what it was. A LOT of luck was involved with that and the stars were aligned. The chances of doing something like that again successfully with a "complete rebuild" are slim to none.

Astros players and coaching staff should be forced to watch every second of the Mariners celebration clinching the division at the completion of our game in the minor league locker room

They went out and got Naylor and Suarez, both of whom had been Mariners, for Brandyn Garcia, Tyler Locklear and some other minor leaguers. Naylor and Suarez are still good. I don't know what the Astros gave up but the reunion tour with Correa didn't work.

Correa has had a WAR around 1 with the club; he hasn't been the problem, in the least.

The Mariners were laughably terrible about 3 weeks ago and their deadline acquisitions weren't doing much for them.

The reality is that this team quit and as much as I hate the reality of Joe Espada as this club's manager; it's not his fault. He absolutely never should've been hired in the first place and was flashing almost immediate signs last April that he was in over his head.

There is absolutely no way that the club can bring him back as the hallmark of his time with the Astros was finding a way to get the least out of the star players he had.

Pretty easy to get the least out of your players when they're all on the IL.

So is your argument that Espada needs to be brought back?

You don't have to be an expert in understanding body language to know that the guys who deal with him every day don't feel that way.

Every team has injuries they have to deal with; yes, the Astros have had historically bad injuries this season; but even when they've had a healthy lineup, they haven't been good.

This team has been broken since Espada took over; there are no perfect teams in the league and the lazy argument is "they have a bunch of washed stars."

I'll say it again, I'm positive that if the Astros chose to do something drastic and sold off Walker, Paredes, Sanchez, Urias, Correa…at least 3 (likely all) of those guys will have a career resurgence somewhere else next season.

Furthermore at some point, the injury situation stops being about luck and in cases for teams who are both good at avoiding IL time and absolutely awful at it…the communication with the players is central.

I'm sure Joe's office has already been packed for him while they're gone, but **Spoiler Alert** there will be a ton of revelations in the offseason about problems between the management staff and players.

This feels like it'll be a replay of the final stretch in 2009 when the team cratered (lost 16 of their last 20 IIRC), fired Cecil Cooper with like 2 weeks to go and then stories started trickling out about how much the players couldn't stand Cooper (wearing shirts in the clubhouse which simply said "Really?" since he made so many boneheaded strategic decisions). Different culture and era here 16 years later…but I'm willing to bet the stories will be similar next week when Espada and his staff are officially jettisoned.

This team has absolutely without a doubt quit on Espada.

Yanier straight up pulling up short and letting a foul ball fall at his feet last night was all you needed to see.
Mathguy64
How long do you want to ignore this user?
The nail on the coffin with Espada for me what how poorly he handled Framber assaulting Salazar.

I'll wager he lost the clubhouse at that moment.

If you really want to do a minor rebuild, trade Pena. He probably has the most value outside of Brown. Correa can play SS and Urias can takeover 3B with Paredes to 1B.

not sure I've ever seen a team in the playoff hunt just appear to give up like this team has done.

But I bet the Tiger fans are saying the same thing. But I think with the Tigers it's a bit of nerves and having never been there - so they are nutting up.

This team appears to have quit.

I wonder how someone like Tito would have handled that. He cut Bauer for throwing the ball into CF. Or at least told the GM to cut him.

How long do you want to ignore this user?
The Tiger's collapse has been even worse than ours given the two scenarios.

But yes, it just seems like our team has quit. Haven't watched any Tigers games so can't really comment there. I have two really good friends from Michigan that are Tigers fans I'm in a group message with and I can tell you they are far more upset and angrier than even this thread.....

How long do you want to ignore this user?
To play devil's advocate, if Paredes and Hader didn't get hurt, do you think we win the AL West?
I think so, even not acquiring Correa back.

At 158 games played for the season, we've missed

Pena for 33
Paredes for 59
Jake for 54
Yordan for 110
Hader for 43
Sousa for 30
Javier for 115
Garcia for 135

Injuries are a stable part of baseball these days. No avoiding them. But that is crushing. However, two things can be true at the same time. We need better luck in 2026, but we also need a new coaching staff.
