For those keeping score at home, Finnegan has pitched 6.2 for DET over 6 games and given up 0 runs and 1 hit.

I know some of my posts reveal my growing need for university-level psycho-analysis and institutional counseling, but I do pay attention and know stuff. DET gave up their #15 prospect and a 22 year old at A ball for Finnegan who was only making $6M this year.

And several here professed that winning teams don't let the tax deter them from trying to win and we should be all in for 2025.

Now - we cannot dive into the free agent market for 2026. Those calling for busting the cap this year got their way and have now sentenced all of us to several seasons of rebuilding.

I wanted to trade for Langeliers and Rooker last offseason. If we had those guys in our lineup this year, we are a playoff team.

Those two additions would lead the team in OPS and HRs.

But how good would Langeliers be overall if he doesn't get to pad his stats against the Rangers?

Mason Miller has more years of control left than rooker and Shane combined. That makes a big difference. And last time I checked our farm system isn't good. I would have been fine getting rid of a 5+ top 15 prospects in our system. Those guys would have gotten us an additional 10 wins. To me that's worth it. Just my opinion. And if you mean expensive in terms of actual cash, we went over the cbt already so money wasn't a concern after all.

But that would make playing the A's much easier!

We did get rid of at least three of our top 15 at the trade deadline. And as I stated previously, you have to factor in the players who graduate to the big leagues and players who are traded away when you evaluate farm systems. As recently as last season ours was pretty highly ranked.

Also, you can assume it would've gotten us an additional 10 wins, but it isn't a guarantee. I brought up the trade for Harold Baines back in the day, it's a great example. The Rangers needed more offense and he seemed like the perfect fit/solution. Problem was he didn't really do much, and didn't really help the Rangers at all.

Any trade is a gamble, just like any FA signing. There's very, very few players who are what you could reasonably call a sure thing. And there's significant downsides to trading away all of your top prospects in one season. The player(s) you get in return might not have the impact you thought they would, and then the following season when you identify a trade target, you've got nothing of value to offer. Just food for thought.

I agree it's easy to say in hindsight. I like to play GM and see how my deals would have turned out. But then again it wouldn't surprise me one bit if we had actually made those moves and Shane and Rook both have career low years. For example, no one expected Pederson to have a year like this.
