He was and has been a .500 regular season manager.
Bochy does a lot of things during the season where I feel he left money on the table. You want to give your players a chance to fail and he does a great job gaining a player's trust and understanding how to use his players in the post-season. That is his magic. Super power.
However, I think when Semien talked about not everyone having that killer instinct to win, he could be referring to Bochy. Bochy was willing to lose games in order to give players a chance.
He needed to transition to "winning" mode earlier and the young guys nearly saved him late in the season. Same happened in '23, where some of the young guys rose to make the playoffs.
Easy to armchair... Garcia's numbers were actually pretty decent, but there was a stint where Bochy kept rolling him out there. Same with Luke.
The game changed since '23. Small ball, moving players around, and doing the little things was the way in '25. We got that with the Little Rascals and the results were obvious. As a team, we never adapted to "the way." Bochy did adapt to making the constant moves of substitution and he can manage that way, but didn't get there early enough in the season.
If we had Seager, Semien, or any number of players return, we might have a different conversation, but the reality is, we didn't get it done. Injuries or not.
