Any knowledgeable information would be appreciated:

I'm a first time home buyer and have been in my house for about two years ago. We received a devastating hail storm a couple of days ago. The siding on one side of my house was destroyed and my roof may or may not have been damaged....it's composition, but it's supposed to be able to withstand up to golf ball size hail. My questions:

A. Will making a claim on my homeowners policy for either the siding or the roof cause my rates to increase because I made a claim? If so, roughly how much for a first time claim for an act of God?

B. If I have the insurance company come out and estimate a claim and then decide to not file a claim, will that impact my homeowner's rate?

C. If my deductible is greater for roof damage, will I have to pay separate deductibles for the same storm event?

D. Tangential issue: does filing a claim on my car insurance for a hail storm cause my individual rate to increase?

Any knowledge would be appreciated...thanks.

A. No, but it will go on your CLUE report.
B. No, but it will go on your CLUE report.
C. One deductible.
D. No.

Because of B, I would get a rough estimate of the damage yourself to see if it's worth getting the insurance involved.

Sorry….what is a CLUE report and how does it affect me? Thank you.

The CLUE report is kind of like a CarFax on your home, but for insurance purposes. It details any claims that the insurance has done on the property.

Have a roofer or tradesman for the issues you need fixed or inspected come out FIRST.

Make sure you know what your deductible is FIRST.

I will inspect roofs and be able to tell a customer if the roof is going to be under the deductible. As a professional, I know how all of these pieces work together and can help a customer know which way to go. That way you have the info before a claim is made.

The insurance man is not going to come out until you call in with a claim.

Your roof might not get you past the deductible but the hail you are talking about and knowing siding is damaged will.

Either way, your rates are going to go up with or without your claim.
