I'm a building code consultant, looking for potential professional partners, and so I want to share some of the critical lessons with this forum that I have learned regarding the role of building codes in estimating.

In my early career, I did not realize how much building codes were going to affect the project cost estimates, and this has resulted in some very expensive errors. Building codes aren't only the instructions, they define the materials, labor, and design specifications requirements. Have any of you ever been surprised by unexpected code requirements?

At present, when I am involved in Construction Estimating Services, I put building codes center stage. They help make the estimates correct and compliant, so we are less likely to be surprised later. If you work in estimating, make codes your main concern; you will notice the change. Do you already include building codes in your estimates at the initial stage, or have you learned the lesson the hard way like I did? Let's exchange our experiences and strategies!

I'm in Fire Protection and it's a big factor. So many different variables depending on what year of NFPA the local jurisdiction is on, etc. It's hard to keep up with just by itself, I can't imagine having to factor in all the various codes for each trade, etc.

I own a commercial roofing company and deal with building code on every single project. Would be great to bounce some things off of you!
