I am installing a hot water recirc pump because it takes 2 minutes to get hot water at the far outlets and I went to secure the water to the water heater and realized (again) the valve is bad. It's a brass valve soldered directly to a copper pipe. Talked to one of our resident home improvement experts BenTheGoodAg and he informed me it's actually not that hard to sweat copper. To YouTube I go. After watching a 2 minute video I realized he is totally correct.

I already have the torch so about $22 in supplies later, outside of the fittings, I'm going to learn to sweat some copper.

That blue propane can will make quite a loud boom if you leave it under your propane grill and have a grease fire.

Job completed successfully but since I can't leave well enough alone I tried to hit the top of the connection again and two giant pieces of solder popped off and now the top of my connection looks like crap. Watertight though.

I found this joint in a bathroom dating back to the original build. Someone got paid for this masterpiece. You've got nothing to worry about.

He must have used the whole spool of soldering wire

Nice work on the fitting!.

It is fun to watch an apprentice try to sweat joints and then have the master come in and finish the job while trying to teach a young fella at the same time.

I will add that sweating a dry pipe, in an accessible location is fairly simple. It's when you get to fighting a bit of residual water, odd locations, and the risk of lighting your framing on fire that things get a bit more challenging.

I can definitely see that. I still managed to scald one of the other pipe hole covers though.

They make fire protectors for that. Also, if you decide to sweat on a valve, wrap the valve part in a cool wet cloth so you don't melt the innards while heating the going part that goes over your pipe.

I've watch way too many videos on this but have never tried sweating copper myself. Did you use flux? Emery cloth? I think you can go over the joint to clean up the excess solder.

I know they do, but I didn't want to mess with all that for one fitting. 99% of the time I would be figuring out how to turn things in to PEX piping.

I did get my FEXT out and set a fire watch though. LOTO on the water heater too.
