Looking for something Thursday night. We like different things. Don't need BBQ.

Gruene Door is pretty solid. Macadoos is crowd pleasing.

Honestly, unless you want a burger or a burrito pickins are slim.

This is my notes I keep in my phone when people visit. I'm sure other opinions exist but here's mine.

Mexican: Fontanas, Cantina del Rio (Gruene)
Seafood:The Reel, McAdoos (nicer)
Nice Dining: Myrons (really nice steak), Huisache, Texas Bistro, Alpine Haus (German), Gennaros (Italian), Gruene River Grill; Gruene Door
Pizza: Stouts, NY Pizza Pub, Bootleggers
Burgers: Tin Top, Muck and Fuss, Iron Horse (has outside play)
BBQ: Granzins, Coopers
Sandwiches/Soups: Cravings, Mozies (Gruene)
Dessert: 2 Tarts Bakery
Breakfast: Buttermilk Cafe; Fork and Spoon; Union Station; Los Gallos Tacos, Nopalito, Tias Tacos

Made reservations for McAdoo's. Trout and flounder both looked really good.

Man, that's a solid list overall, but one major outlier. Cantina del Rio is awful and has been ever since they went to table service and upended the menu (and recipes). The OG Cantina was awesome, but that's been about 7-8 years ago. Adobe Verde went the opposite direction. Their food used to be below average and they stepped up in a big way if you want Mexican in Gruene

Agreed on Cantina. Haven't been to Adobe Verde since it changed.

I would add Butcher Boy and Marinas to breakfast. They are some of my tacos - I like them more than Gallos (love how big the tacos are but eggs always too runny) and Nop.

The restaurant "breakfast" in Veramendi was great when the wife and I tried it last weekend for the first time.

Cody's downtown is good if you want a nicer place. McAdoos is hit or miss but their bar is tops.

NB is unfortunately a food desert when it comes to decent restaurants

It's Tex Mex. Bbq. And then a bunch of places that just kinda make it bc they are the only show in town.

Huisache is probably the stand out. Beer/wine only. No cocktails.

I have not heard anything positive about the "new" Adobe Verde from numerous people. Cantina is terrible. It's too bad too because it's a great location.

used to love Adobe Verde growing up. Went a year and a half ago and it was awful. Like the worst Tex mex I've ever had.

The new updated menu and building remodel has been within the last 6 months. Went last weekend and I got the Birria Tacos and wife got the Fish Tacos. Both were really good, but the Birria was definitely the better of the two. We'll run up and get nachos and a margarita when we just want to sit outside in Gruene.

Great for beer and apps. The dinner menu has some solid items, but its elevated bar food. I guess for a beirgarden thats probably expected.

Agree with others - if you catch Krause's when the weather is nice and you're with good company, it can be really fun. But that's just the environment and the beer. Worth doing, but you're not going to be chasing the food, although I do really like their steak frites.

It's definitely better, but I'd still do Dos Rios over Cantina. It's basically Pappasito's without the name.

Los Fontanas, Dos Rios, and La Cosecha are all the best, but I'm referring to having Mexican in Gruene. I should have clarified earlier

If you want something unique for NBTX you have to try Alpine Haus. Authentic German cuisine.

I always can tell if a Mexican place is good if I see an abuelita flipping tortillas with her flour caked bare hands. That's how this place is but German. When I noticed there was a Grandma in the kitchen barking orders to the staff in German, I knew the food would not disappoint

the real OG German restaurant in NB was the Log Haus. On the East side of 35 between Engle and solms kind of where tree of life is now. Iirc.

A food desert? In what way? Are you comparing NB to Austin or San Antonio? Because if you compare NB to San Marcos or another close similarly sized city, I'd say that NB is significantly better.

Hands down the best restaurant in NBTX.

Compared to what? Houston, Austin, DFW, San Antonio?

Relative to it's population NB punches well above it's weight in terms of restaurants.

What city that's not directly nuzzled against a large metro with a population of 120,000 has a better line up restaurants than New Braunfels?

So it's my understand the the Adobe Verde name is completely gone and it's now called "Tacos y Tequila" and I completely agree with you. Went with my wife, parents and child. We really wanted to like it as it's relatively close and they have a nice playground for the kid. It was bad food.

My parents got the fajitas - a TexMex place should be able to serve a decent plate of fajita's. The meat was severely under seasoned as was the onions and peppers, nor were the veggies sauted to the degree you would expect. The tortillas were average at best.

I got the beef enchiladas - it was just completely unseasoned ground beef in corn tortillas with half melted cheap cheddar cheese. It was a terrible plate on enchiladas. It in no way tasted like what you would expect a "beef enchilada" to taste like.

My wife got some sort of chicken taco plate and it was equally bad. The kids taco was fine.

I have had worst TexMex, but that was in Iowa.

100%. Started going mid '90s after church. The beach like fabric cushions. Tile table tops. Turkey sub was my go to back then. As I got older it became the chicken fried steak. Not a bad thing on the menu.
