I have a kid who is beginning to look at colleges and is considering applying to the AFA. I was told by the parent of another academy grad to get in contact with his AFA liaison officer, but and having a hard time finding a directory online. Anybody know where I can get the contact info for the right person?

Once you start the application process. Your info will trigger a call from the liaison officer. We are in fort worth and his interview was a phone call. His army and navy were in person.
Also side note. Highly recommend you apply to all the academies and rotc. They will ask what your back up plans are and they appreciate it when you apply to everything. It makes for a long process but it is what it is.

It's been many years since I retired and was not an ALO, but had several friends who were. One comment I recall them making is that too many kids wait too long to start a conversation about the academies. They can give guidance for student activities. All applicants to the academies have great grades. That's a given. It's the "additional duties" where they show leadership. Many don't start looking at that util junior or senior year, and it is too late. Freshman year is not too soon to make contact. The things that make one attractive to an academy will do the same anywhere.
Agree. The bgo/ ffr etc well be your contact to help get in. One of the biggest thing kids lack is leadership. Their whole candidate score is what helps them and leadership and extras is super important. I wish parents and kids knew that they apply to college with their junior year scores and not senior year.
Go to all the admission events, we went to the different events in north Texas and the ffr ( west point) was at all 3 events.
Starting late spring of your junior year, get a notebook and label it and write your lists down.
Once you start your apps, you will get a checklist ands will need multiple emails from teachers, etc for your recommendations.
Lots of simultaneous things need to b happen.. army., Navy, af academy portals. VP nomination, 2 senators and your congressman. Also your rotc app. So 8 portals going at the same time.
You will need to be medically and academically qualified and pass the CFA. So basically "3 q'd with a nomination" by Jan 31. The nominations ( senator, congressman) have early deadlines.
If you get your interviews done, it will trigger medical. Schedule eye doctor and regular doctor ASAP. Medical board will tell you where to go. If you have to get a waiver that could go into early spring.
Always have may 1 as a deadline and if you get the appointment before- awesome! The Jan 31 to may 1 wait period is agony.

USAFA 2011 parent here. All good advice above. Anything I once knew is probably way out of date by now, but I'm available for questions anyway. Good luck to you. There are tons of Texans at USAFA, and lots of them have Aggie connections.
Thanks for the responses. My son is just finishing his sophomore year. At this point, the AFA is more my idea than his, but he is willing to look into it. He'll have the grades, test scores and varsity letters in two sports. He was not really focused on a military career like I was at his age, but I saw plenty of folks wake up one day with no prior interest in the military suddenly join and stick with it for a long time. So we are just taking the very first steps and learning more about it.
Cool! If he decides. He absolutely needs to do boys state next summer and he needs to get on executive board of his clubs, at least one. NHS, ffa, etc. - my son was never pres or vp but he was on the boards as something. Good luck !
Is Boys State an American Legion sponsored activity? I don't know much about it.
Yes! Go to your high school and check with them. They should have the info to the local American legion. My girls did girls state when we were stationed in north Carolina and we were not members of that particular legion. My son did Texas BS associated with our local American legion we belong too. You don't need to be members.

Don't forget to sign up for the Summer Seminar. (applications should open around December of your kid's junior year) You should also look at the SLE at West Point and NASS at Annapolis.
My son graduates in 2 weeks! If your child is interested get the process started at the end of the sophomore year. Too many people wait until it is too late. It sounds like you are right on time.
I'm not sure of your location, but in Southeast Texas, Congressmen Randy Webber and Brian Babin host an event with all service academies and several military prep schools to provide information and resources for students and parents. Check with your congressman to see if there is anything for your district.
