Howdy folks,

I'm a reservist who recently went on long-term active duty orders out of state (Virginia Beach, Va). At the moment, I'm doing the geo-batchelor thing, but I want to bring up my wife and kid. The challege is that I need to try to find a job for my wife up here. Are there any good sources of jobs for mil spouses out there? I've found a few things online, but they seem pretty limited. Any thoughts or ideas to help me find something for her (or a place that can help, like some kind of family support office) would be appreciated.

You might try letting us know what she can do. Nurse, schoolteacher, bartender, Uber driver.

Check out Hiring Our Heroes, they partner with companies and most have support for spouses.

My company also has its own spouses hiring program but I just checked and right now the only ones available are branch banking. Here's an example of a LinkedIn post from a couple weeks ago that had a few corporate openings.

Old Army, she's worked as a sort of office administrator for most of her career, although the last few years, she's been working in education at my son's school simply for convenience.

I retired a hundred years ago and my wife never worked until my last duty station when she got bored. She got a job as a file clerk in a multi-doctor office, when we retired and moved to Texas she got a job as a front office clerk in an orthopedic office and did that for 25 years until the last one retired. Great hours, minimal pay and decent job security. The bigger the office the more turnover, ergo the better chance of getting hired. She should probably work with a staffing company if she doesn't know anyione.

Places on post like the commissary, MWR, etc have priority hiring for spouses. I don't know if that courtesy extends to reservists because you weren't PCS'd so your wife moving is her choice.

In the Army you'd go to the Army Community Service office on post, for VA Beach you probably are in the Navy, I think the Navy equivalent is called Fleet and Family Support

USAJOBS.GOV

This is the best resource as once you can slay the raid boss and get her into the GS system she can move jobs when you PCS. Work with one of these orgs that will help her tailor her CV to the job.

This can be difficult and discouraging. At Bragg, the kind ladies at the CPAC essentially told my wife she wasn't the right race to get hired.

Spouse jobs is one of the single biggest issues for long term retention. In 21 years, we found many businesses not willing to hire mil spouses because they know they are temp hires.

Thus finding a job that is portable with you when you PCS.

I have written numerous congressmen to suggest offering tax breaks for companies that hire active duty mil spouses.

When people "thank me for my service".... I tell them that they can do that by hiring a Mil Spouse, or sending their business to my wife's company. Talk is cheap.

Check the website mentioned above. Look for admin assistant for USACE. Admin assistants are almost exclusively reserved for Military spouses.. They are GS's. USACE is present on all large Army bases..
