Passing through Austin around 11 this morning. Thinking about stopping by Leroy and Lewis on my way back to Dallas. I assume the line will be crazy at 11am?

Decided to go for it. Line is not bad.

Yup. Had an A&M hoodie on. Everything was delicious. The brisket reminded me of Cattleack's in their prime.

Definitely worthy of that Michelin star.

Does their fried rice have vegetables in it?

I'm intrigued by the whole concept.

No veg - they do white jasmine rice or 'upgrade' to the bbq fried rice (with bits of brisket & Chinese sausage)

Spoke with the owner who said growing up they would often use rice as a way to stretch meals for days, this pays homage to that but at a high level

All other meats they offer look stellar, I would like to go back soon to sample the rest of it all - ribs looked great

I wonder if he'll try making his own boudin.

Sometimes when I'm in Austin, I'll drive by Franklin's spot just to see what the line looks like. I was downtown on Wednesday and drove by at 12:15 and was surprised to see there were only 5 people waiting outside the door.

So, I parked (in their parking lot!), got in line, and was eating within 35 minutes.

It had been a few years since my last visit. It was perfection as always. But... it was just as good as anything else nowadays. Heck, even my ribs are nearly identical because I do exactly what he taught everyone else to do.

The consistency has always been spot on, though. And this was a nice surprise for a Wednesday before I drove back home.

We are all beneficiaries of the revolution started by Franklin. Amen.

Found a hidden BBQ gem. SMOKY BUNS, 311 Highland Estates Dr, Round Rock, TX

Brisket, Pastrami Ribs, Sausage was outstanding. It's really good BBQ. If you're in the area definitely worth a stop.

Went to the new Micklethwait location on Saturday, happy to report they're just as good as they've ever been.

They still serving their Knockwurst? Back when I lived down there 2009-2013 that was the best sausage I had ever eaten. Glad to hear they got a new spot.

If you don't mind me asking, I've always been curious about this. Do most bbq shops cook the briskets the day before service? And if so, do you refrigerate and reheat? Something else? Always wondered about this since I doubted most were cooking overnight.

Can't speak for them, but I've seen videos of other places and i think it's common to hold/rest the briskets for like 6-8 hours.

They started as a food truck in 2017, opened the restaurant in 2019, and were only open 5 hours a day/5 days a week. Was their following so extensive they could operate in such a reduced timeframe?

Vaqueros opened up in Allen a week or two ago. They were a food truck/pit in Grand Prairie and this is their first restaurant. I think the mi cocina group may be their investor.

We ordered from them for the Super Bowl. My wife picked it up and they forgot half our Oder. But other than that (they replaced it), it was awesome. Brisket was great. I'm not a ribs guy but thought their ribs were good. Brria tacos were great. They were out of barbacoa tacos so couldn't try those. Pork tacos were decent. Sides were good. Thought the beans were great; green chile mac and cheese was decent, Mexican coleslaw was average, elotes was good but you had to cut it off the cob (which I don't like).

Anyone else tried it? I recommend if you are in the area. Prices are high. But I figure that's to be expected for bbq these days.

Sorry, don't take any pics. We got the grand Texas platter or something like that.

I think it will be interesting to see how they do with the pressure of the big-time Dallas investors behind him.

It's a bummer to see them go, but they always seemed like a worse value compared to the other prime places and a notch below even Helburg in Waco. Terry Black's opening less than a mile away certainly didn't help. Best of luck to them, iirc they have some heavy Aggie influence in the family.

How's the wait at corkscrew these days? Planning on heading there tomorrow.
CDub06
How long do you want to ignore this user?
I've not been to Corkscrew in a while. I did have a buddy try to show up on a Saturday a few weeks back at noon and said the line was obscene. I was like "duh."

Fass Brewery in Conroe is having "Lagerfest" here in a few weeks and they've pulled KG BBQ to setup for the even, so I'm super stoked about that!

I've been getting around Texas a bit more lately, so I've hit several great spots over the last month or so. But I've not been posting anywhere. So here y'all go:

Reese Bros in San Antonio is top 5 for me. Had another stop there last week at like 2PM. No line, nothing was sold out, everything was phenomenal. Those Carnitas are next level!

Tried out Castroville BBQ Co (Formerly Blu Lacy) and it was the standard new school Texas BBQ nowadays. Very good, not elite. The venue is really nice. That small town is spoiled with this place.

I had Doziers in Fulshur this weekend. It was very good. It was more old school bbq you used to see a lot at these small local places. I know they've been doing it for decades though. Gobs of smoke on the meat without the Franklin standard of coarse S&P on the bark.

Had Blood Bros last weekend, which is always one of my favorites. Have to shout them out. (Also had a couple of specials not pictured here)

Introduced my parents to J Bar M BBQ in Houston which has become a go to for me after a flight. The BBQ is always solid and there's never a wait when I'm in there. I'd only gotten meats there, but my wife swears by the brisket lasagna. So, I opted for the brisket enchiladas this time and they were very good, though the sauce was the same the use in the lasagna.
