That's incredibly insulting to the millions of parents with special needs kids who manage to avoid such embarrassing outbursts.

Is it really "incredibly insulting"?

No, it was just a really stupid post trying to justify poor behavior of a TAMU coach. I doubt any parents care.

I just emailed him a link to this thread. Here's hoping he chimes in!

See, I thought the way to go would be to create a fake bobinator acct on the Memphis boards and repost the story.

Why any coach or player would read texags is beyond me.
But in reality, as denied constantly on Texags, they obviously do. And I'm sure some players and recruits do too. I've never understood the effort of some to constantly dis their own school. Fans all *****, but fans should keep this in mind on a public forum. That's the message I get out of the story.

Not really. He's just a guy who can't stand internet wise asses. I have a special needs daughter (and 2 others with doctorates). Being a wise ass is being a wise ass no matter the victim.

by that theory, the ad reads Texags too (I think they all read fan message boards). Oh, the same guy who decides hiring and firing and is measuring the view of fans-making voicing displeasure potentially worthwhile.

You can't have it both ways.

If Texags actually fired coaches, Kennedy would have had a 2 year tenure instead of 8 and Rob Childress would have been fired in 2009 and every following year....and Evans....and Sumlin....and Sherman.....and Slocum....and DX Bible if they'd got around to making the internet sooner.

Texags is the main hangout for where the squeakiest wheels come to "dear diary" their tantrums during losses. If there's any evidence that the AD comes here to use the reasoned dialogue to bolster their hiring and firing decisions, we've yet to see it (or that the donors that make their decisions for them care much either). If I was AD, that's the exact validity I would give any fan board input (not to mention if they need the internet to figure out how when to do their job, we have bigger problems).

I'm not sure I see the similarity in recognizing that the student athletes see when you say that they're terrible vs. pretending the message board has been the deciding vote in basketball coaching changes.

I feel like you missed the point.

Texags complaining hasn't gotten anyone fired. Regardless of it was a good idea or not. There's no indication Texags posts were weighted in any coaching decision. The Kennedy tenure being the most glaringly obvious example.

I think Texags is just another data point. I do think they by and large read what people have to say and that can be influential to a limited extent. Enough to get someone fired immediately (that should go asap, like bk), no. But influential over time. Just like if some crazy website was negatively reviewing my employees, it would possibly bring stuff to my attention and I would weigh it accordingly.

It was season before last like I said in the OP, also just because I thought people would enjoy the story. There's not much else to talk about in the middle of June and now that he doesn't work here there's no harm in sharing it.

Chris' parents were big followers/supporters of the team, went on the team flights and helped subsidize some of it from what I understand. It stands to reason why Darby and the coaches would defend Chris.

But that is all water under the bridge now, I am just happy we have Buzz. The Kennedy era lasted way too long!

"went on the team flights and helped subsidize some of it"

This part is wrong. They supported Chris and the team by going to many if not all the away games. Didn't go on the team flights nor help subsidize it.

What? Like they brought a box of Girl Scout cookies on the flights? Why would a multi-million dollar basketball program need parents to subsidize any of it? This isn't a D-3 program

That makes the situation far more odd. The helicopter parents pressured the coaching staff? They directly subsidized the travel for the program and in exchange received a scholarship for their son?? And Rich was motivated to act to protect their son to protect against, what, the parents confronting TexAgs forum members?

There is so much to unpack there. Could take us months...

yeah i don't totally buy into that. We don't need the money.

Was cc a favorite of bk- causing him in part to play him way too much and not add enough guards in the off-season bc of bk overating cc's skill as a solid rotation guy? Yeah I buy that. He got big minutes for 3 years with very poor production. It wasn't just a 1 year perfect storm deal to get him on the floor.

I also think he must have looked way better in practice over the years than in games... Practice play making bk believe more. Surely he shot better--that has to be a given.

So, Collins' parents gave money to team and Collins got three years of college paid off? Yeah, that sounds legit.

The source retracted the more inflammatory claims. Puts the spotlight back on Rich. Odd that our dear friend Ross Martin isn't retracting all of it just the claim of funding team travel. Guessing the parents' closeness to the team and coaches did motivate Rich's behavior and possibly got the coaching staff concerned. I somehow doubt it's material. Kinda like your story. But that Rich focused on a specific student athlete was always the hook in your story,

It's the offseason. It's boring. If stuff like this isn't worth discussion, we might as well shut it down and agree to reconvene in October.

There are a few things to talk about in this thread.

1. The whole Chris Collins' parents flew on the plane and subsidized some of the costs is false. That was made clear by the person who posted it, but wanted to make sure everyone on here had a chance to understand that that simply isn't the case. People don't always read the edits to posts, so I wanted to get that out there.

2. People in athletic departments read fan websites from every school. Not all, but some. They are fans, just like you and me. However, as in this case, when a person is directly mentioned in a thread, especially one like this that gains some steam, usually that person is contacted by a friend, or acquaintance and notified.

3. The above mention of being made aware goes in this case, as a couple of people recently told Darby about this thread and he made mention of it to me. He said he regrets the situation and shouldn't have said anything. What he was referring to was not the people saying Chris had a bad game or shouldn't be playing or talking about his skill level (people are going to judge that no matter who you are), but he was upset that some were taking it too far and taking personal shots at Chris.

He saw a guy who was put in really bad situations and giving it his all for his team and anonymous people felt they could take direct, personal shots at a kid from behind a computer screen. Again, if he had the chance, he most likely would have never had that interaction. At the time, he was protecting one of his guys.

He went about it in the wrong manner, but there are a couple of people on this thread that have gone about their responses in the wrong manner (you know who you are... or maybe the problem is that you really don't know who you are) as well by making unnecessary comments about the person on the previous basketball staff who put more heart and soul into the kids, on and off the court, than any other staff member.

As a member of the coaching staff, you cannot have those types of interactions, but that doesn't dismiss the fact that the same people who are complaining about Darby's handling of the situation, are the same people who are trying to belittle him through words on a message board.

Something about glass houses...

What about glass houses?

The people belittling Darby for being a coach who told people to come fight him aren't coaches and they're not telling people to come fight them.
