I honestly like Bucky's communication style, which seems pretty "organic"/dynamic in terms of the flow of the conversation.

Here is the overall summary:

  • Talked about his real name being Henry McMillan.
  • Meteoric rise from HS coach to A&M coach.
  • Alabama and Texas people being very similar (chill/down people)
  • College Station being an easy town to acclimate to.
  • A&M has the resources for championships.
  • A&M is opening during the spring. Samford's AD told him that A&M was a place he could go and be successful.
  • What is Bucky ball? When he started in Alabama HS, the majority of teams played very slow. Old coaches used to talk about "bucky ball" as somebody bad but eventually became a good thing.
  • Nate Oaks (Bama) is a guy he looked in terms of analytics/style.
  • Samford vs Kansas game in 2024 and losing a close game.
  • Mid-majors not having a real chance to go deep in the tournament due to the talent gap and transfer portal. In 2024/25, eight (8) of his players transfer to other places. When he was at Samford, he could not talk about financial piece so he focused on basketball. Now he is at the other side (A&M), he talks to prospects about a big stage conference, facilities, how the team travels etc.
  • About the talent recruited. Not the best team ever assembled, but the best considering they started recruiting so late (April 8th). At the time 80% of the top portal players were taken. People at A&M supported the coaching staff.
  • Will be a good shooting team capable of beating everybody and will have some games making twenty three point shots. Some players are +40% 3pt shooter.
  • Basketball is a post-season sport, and you need to shoot well to make it.
  • SEC had 14 out of 16 teams in 2024/25 making the dance. 9 out of 16 coaches have at least taken the team to an Elite 8. The goal is to qualify for the tournament and win it.
  • If you are in the SEC, sharpen your skills (in terms of coaching).
  • Non-conference schedule. Still working on some legal stuff. Buzz Williams had some games with non-Power 5 teams. Talked about 9 and 4 model (9 non power five and 4 power five).
  • Based on the personnel, is it realistic to make the tourney? Bucky said yes and emphasized that A&M was playing in the SEC championship 2/3 years ago. He expects A&M to make the tournament.
  • Asked for a "gigem" at the end, but Jon Rothstein declined "gracefully.

Interview starts ~24 min mark.

This was my favorite part. If it actually happens people are going to be fainting in the aisles at Reed like an Elvis concert.

Our school record for threes in a game is only 16. Hell we had three games last year where we didn't make 20 buckets from anywhere. (We won two of them!)

To just sort of casually throw out that we're going to break our school record for threes by 25% multiple times has me hyped. His Samford teams did do it a handful of times the last few years.

I truly believe that Bucky is the guy to take us further than we've ever been

Not a big deal but I wonder why Rothstein "gracefully" declined giving a Gig 'Em. It doesn't cost him a thing.

He is a "Big J journalist" and thinks it shows bias. It's silly, but Rothstein is a very serious guy.

I think Rothstein is on par with greg.w.h. with how close to a semi-sentient AI he is

In the interview, he declined because he was trying to not appear biased, or something like that.

Not biased if he just does it for every coach that asks him to. I suppose there are a lot of programs that don't have hand signals so just ask him to give a thumbs up for your program.

Rothstein's whole shtick involves bias towards particular coaches. Not sure why this would be a big deal to him but who cares. Weird guy but good follow

Was funny because Bucky in the interview to the question of which coaches' he analyzes, Bucky first said he didn't want to mention the handful of coaches he studies now because of recruiting against them. But he did insinuate Alabama's coach is one he studies, to answer the question.

Coach McMillan's real full name is Henry Ward McMillan III. His nickname came from his father, Henry Ward McMillan II, who also was nicknamed "Bucky." Coach McMillan's grandfather Henry Ward McMillan (Sr.) gave his son his nickname after the baseball player Stanley Raymond "Bucky" Harris (1895-1977), who he admired. Bucky Harris was inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame by the Veteran's Committee in 1975. His nickname came from early life when older kids in the neighborhood gave him the nickname. They gave him the nickname "Bucky" because, when playing basketball, he tossed opponents off his back like a bronco. Reference: Google AI.

He said we are planning to go with the 8/5 model so we will have 5 games with P5 teams.

He basically said he was very happy with the work and what the staff was able to put together considering they didn't get here until 4/8, but said this won't be the best team we are able to put together here. Definitely sounds confident and has me somewhat intrigued and excited to see what he can put together next year. Will have to replace a lot of pieces after this year and put together a roster again next year.

Around 35:45 mark, says he thinks we will have multiple games this season where we make 20+ from beyond 3. Not guaranteeing it but says, "He thinks" it will happen

Around 36:25 mark, says he thinks we will have guys shoot 40% from 3 (not that we have guys that shoot at that clip but that he thinks will shoot over 40%). Just wanted to clarify b/c you know how Texags does it and they will read this like he said these players already have shown over 40% and that is not what he was saying. People on here run with something like this and then when it doesn't happen, they will turn all negative and why can't we shoot over 40 when Bucky said we have those types of shooters and start speculating all kinds of negatives and is it something with Bucky and so on and so on. You know, just Texagging like normal. Cliff Jumpers come out and all Negative Nancys, so I was just clearing that up

This got me curious as to how many of our guys have shot 40% or higher from 3?

Pop Isaac...................and quoted below if you don't want to hit link or it doesn't work. Shows 38.3% from 3 per Luke's commitment write up on Pop

Quote:

He shot 41 percent from the field, 38.3 percent from 3-point range and 86.2 percent at the free-throw line.
Ruben Dominguez..............again quoted below as an option to this link. 39.6% from 3 on Luke's write up on his commitment

Quote:

he played in 27 games for Bilbao in Spain and averaged 6.3 points and 1.6 rebounds while shooting 39.6 percent from 3-point land on over three attempts per game and 86.2 percent from the free-throw line.
Rylan Griffin............quoted below with a quote about last year at Kansas but also included a quote for what he did at Bama the year before and more in this style of offense. And here's the link. 33.6% at Kansas last season and 39.2% at Bama previous season

Quote:

At 6-foot-6 and 190 pounds, Griffen averaged 6.3 points, 2.1 rebounds and 1.4 assists as a junior for the Jayhawks. He shot 37.2 percent from the field, 33.6 percent from 3-point range and 67.5 percent at the free throw line.
Quote:

In the 2023-24 season, he started 33 of Alabama's 36 games on the Tide's road to the 2024 Final Four. During that season, he shot 45.4 percent from the field, 39.2 percent from 3-point range and 81 percent at the free throw line.
Marcus Hill.........quote below here. Definitely not this guy at only 20%

Quote:

At 6-foot-4 and 185 pounds, Hill averaged 11.5 points, 3.9 rebounds and 1.6 assists as a senior for the Wolfpack. He shot 45.3 percent from the field, 20.5 percent from 3-point range and 75.3 percent at the free-throw line.
Mackenzie Mgbako..........see below. Definitely doesn't look like the guy at just under 33%

Quote:

At 6-foot-9 and 220 pounds, Mgbako averaged 12.2 points, 4.6 rebounds and 1.1 assists as a sophomore for the Hoosiers. He shot 43.7 percent from the field, 32.9 percent from 3-point range and 81 percent at the free throw line.
Josh Holloway..........see below. doubtful he's the guy at 28%

Quote:

At 6-foot-2 and 160 pounds, Holloway averaged 7.9 points, 2.7 rebounds, 2.7 assists and 1.5 steals as a sophomore for the Bulldogs. He shot 44.1 percent from the field, 28.1 percent from 3-point range and 69.6 percent at the free throw line.
Jacari Lane..........see below. This might be the guy, shot just over 40%

Quote:

At 6-foot and 180 pounds, Lane averaged 17.3 points, 3.2 rebounds, four assists and 1.3 steals as a junior for the Lions. He shot 42.3 percent from the field, 40.6 percent from 3-point range and 79.1 percent at the free throw line.

I know it's been knocked on about how short Lane is but if he can hit at over 40% from 3, I am sure Bucky will have him in there more than most seem to think.

Also, I want to reiterate, not being negative just trying to clarify, he didn't say he we have guys that will shoot over 40% but that he thinks we will. And, I realize it's a lot to balance, first P4 HC job and it's in the SEC and you were only left 1 player, having to piece so many independent pieces together, we just don't know and how the cliff jumpers temper their expectations with all this in mind. That doesn't mean I am not hopeful that some of our guys like Griffin, Dominguez (I don't know how their 3pt line compares to ours?) and Isaacs can shoot at least as good as their previous numbers or possibly 1 or 2 of them hit that 40% and add to what Lane can do for us. I am excited that's for sure.

This is an incredibly impressive amount of research for something that seems kind of trivial. 10/10 offseason post.

Who cares if an individual player shoots 40.1% vs 39.8%? If the whole team is shooting above about 35% I'll be happy. Last year that gets you in the top third of the country. We haven't finished in the top 100 of 3pt% in like 12 years.

Yeah, we've been a pretty poor 3 point shooting g team for a while now

Seeing us hitting lots of 3's will make me very happy

For once I want the other team, not us, to be saying "oh man this team is scary because they light it up from 3"
