Caruso is officially an Aggie legend.

First player in nba history with two 20 point games in the nba finals after zero in the regular season.

Second player in nba history w 20+ points, 5+ steals, 75+ fg% in a finals game.

And yes, I was one of the people who thought he would be an nba player when he was in college. Size, athleticism, ball handling, vision, defensive beast…all he needed was a better jumper and he's developed that obviously.

I didn't foresee how great of a player he's become, but you'd have to be a full-on basketball racist to not see his abilities.

Agree....well not your racist undertone, but whatever floats your boat.

Guess the formula is if Caruso gets 20pts + all his normal stats, Thunder win games in the finals. Doesn't get 20 pts, they lose.

Game 3, they should have put him on TJ McConnell to avoid that guy becoming a bench legend as he was instrumental for the Pacers.

You don't think some people dismissed Caruso's nba potential bc of his race?

guards that averaged 8 pts a game in college almost never make it in the pros, white or black.

Alex proved almost everyone wrong through incredible hard work, grit and smarts.

It is truly incredible. He is one of the top defenders in the entire league but also so much more than that. Amazing stuff.

Agreed, but once in the NBA he was still dismissed because he's white. Its just not common, so most people took one look and dismissed him.

I DID think he would be a very good NBA player and that he was the PERFECT player for the Spurs to pick up and develop. He fit everything they were about, and it pizzed me off and surprised me when they didnt even bite on this guy in their own backyard.

i guess he wasnt woke enough for pop.

Points per game is largely meaningless to the nba. They look at height, vertical, ball handling and shooting skill, ability to stay in front of the ball…and sadly some nba people are not color blind.

Caruso had all of that in spades other than shooting. There is zero doubt Caruso was discriminated against because of his color.

The dude is a freaking player…glad he's an Aggie shining some Aggie light in the shadows of Aggie baseball and our 4 game football slide this year.

Yeah Redfish- thats what i was talking about. Thought Spurs could improve his shoiting like they did Bowen and even Kawhi, then he'd be perfect fir them.

Or the Spurs had a glut of guards in those drafts (DeJounte Murray, Derrick White in back to back years) and were developing them instead of repleninshing through the G league.

Some of you guys making this a race thing is completely weird to me. Caruso made the freaking Lakers off a two way contract and is a testament to being undrafted and working your way to the league and you want to puff your chest out because hes white? Or just because he went to A&M? Obviously his history with the OKC organization (Daigneault coached him in the G league) made quite an impact and he's a made man in the league.

Isn't that story good enough on it's own?

Well said.

Folks need to give the political statements and social commentary a break - or save it for another board that welcomes that stuff.

Only on TexAgs can a thread started in honor of our arguably the greatest performing NBA Ag of all time turn into a discussion on the effect of race on talent scouting.

It's the same thread every time, Caruso was obviously an NBA player, everyone that passed on him is an idiot and/or hates white people, etc. etc.

where Caruso actually ranks among our NBA players is an interesting conversation though.

He's definitely still way behind Jordan and Middleton for the top two spots.

Probably between him and Sonny Parker for third? If he gets a second ring maybe that gives him the edge?

There were also some people in the "no chance" category on him getting drafted but didn't rule out that he'd get there someday. I think that's a somewhat important distinction.

Caruso is one of my favorite Aggie athletes and to me the best pure PG we have had since i went to school in 2010 (Wade was more of a scoring pg). I still didn't think he would ever be in the nba outside of the g league so I am happy that he has made it.

He 100% got some lunchpail/coachonthecourt/sneakyfast treatment. Same as Ryan Swope. The irony is this...will I still be alive when the next black American player wins the MVP?

I sat with Alex and ate with him at the father son camp between his Junior and Senior year and talked about his future in basketball.
He told me that he thought he could play if given the chance and needed to work on his 3 point shooting his senior year to erase some scouting concerns but this was the fist offseason he thought the NBA was a real option.
I watched him and Jalen Jones during one of their practices and he was the better athlete. I pay attention to the combine numbers every year and have since 2006. He had top level combined level athleticism.
A 40" vert in the NBA combine is rare (2-3 per year). He was getting over the box with ease during their little dunk contest and that puts him right at 40". I knew he had a shot with his ball handling, and potential to defend.

And when he went to the D League I think it was still a rare thing for a player to graduate from there into the NBA.

I don't make a lot of predictions.

Know what else I don't do? Make definitive statements that a guy has no chance.

And we have an entire thread of that, full of people trying to save face now. I can link you to it if you'd like to read it.

BBDP - im not sure Alex had a 40" vericql or that yhere are 2 or 3 of thise a year.

I was surprised when i saw a few yrs ago the average NBA veryical is 28". diff between that and 40" is llike diff
between an 11.0 100M and a 9.8!

well, everything i'm reading his vertical really was that- wow!

I think the "I told you so crowd" is feeling vindication is needed because they were shouted down when they said Caruso could go to the NBA.

I get sick (it's less so here than it used to be) of someone sharing an opinion and others calling them idiot, moron, obtuse, rose glassed, etc and acting like sports prognostication is an exact science. It's like when the two guys on daytime espn argue about who is going to win game 7 like they're arguing a quantifiable math calculation.

Someone states an opinion, others chime in. It works.

Someone states an opinion, others attack.....it creates a bad forum.
