2 games in and Bucky Ball has taken Aggieland by storm. After 2 games against Northwestern State and Texas Southern, it's time to take Bucky Ball on the road for a major test. Sunday afternoon as your cowboys are on a bye or your Texans are already losing, Texas A&M Basketball will be in Stillwater for a 1pm tip off against a solid Oklahoma State squad.
Texas A&M has been electric in its first two games (well on offense). 98 points and 104 points scored. Both games have seen 5 guys each in double figures, minimal turnovers, plenty of three's, great ball movement, and fast. All that will be tested against the Big 12 foe who has size and quality guards from the portal. In year 2 under Steve Lutz, Oklahoma State is built to be more competitive in the Big 12. They brought in one of the nation's best portal classes with 7 portal additions and 5 freshman.
Oklahoma State added Green Bay transfer who led the nation in scoring last season with over 25 points a game. Kanye Clary a sharpshooter who played for Penn State against us in the tourney a few years ago. They also added Vyctorious Miller who was a guard at LSU last season as well as a guard from UMass in Jaylen Curry. They also added another guard from Seton Hall in Isaiah Coleman who averaged 15ppg. For their big men they have gone overseas. They added a 22 year old freshman big man from Greece who can also shoot from the outside. As well as a Serbian big in Andrija Vukovic who they relied on heavily in game 1 and Iraninan big who played for Oregon State last year and was 2nd team all big 12.
In game 1, they were without Anthony Roy, their backcourt was led by Curry, Miller, and Clary. Miller led them with 21, while big men Fallah added 15 and 8 and Vukovic added 11 and 4. Oklahoma State dominated the boards and shot 30 free throws. They also play a fast tempo and either take the quick 3 or force feed it to their bigs. They love to run in transition and will push the pace. It'll be really interesting to see how we face up with their tempo. We may get a back and forth 200 point total or this becomes a sloppy turnover fest. Can't wait to find out!
Big picture wise, it's the first real test of the Bucky Era. A chaotic April and May trying to piece a roster together, it was probably a challenge to get the schedule put together. 2 great wins against a small schools, then you get a chance to see what your guys and team is made of on the road against a power 4 opponent. A good barometer on the road. How does our press hold up against a more athletic team? How do we handle a hostile environment? Can we shoot well on the road?
Both teams love to run and both teams love to shoot from 3. I think this will come down to who can take care of the basketball and who can stay out of foul trouble. No word on Agee's status at this point, but I'm sure he'll play. Oklahoma State has a few players including Roy that will be game time decisions. First test of the Bucky Era, and it's on a national stage! Oklahoma State is having an abysmal football season and has shifted their hope to basketball. It will be a loud environment.
