Another of our batters hit in the head. Tired of seeing them just have to take it, maybe give a little back for once.

What, exactly, do you mean by that?

You should definitely retaliate if its intentional. Neither were.

Some of us don't have the stars to do that.

The guy I replied to has stars and they're available if you want to read some very good baseball content.

Just pray it is a minor fracture and it will heal on its own. He probably has a ton of swelling and will have at least one raccoon eye.

We have had such crappy luck as a baseball program for years starting with Brandens broken ankle running past 3B in Supers.

Hitting someone in retaliation never made sense to me... why give your opponent a free baserunner just because your teammate got hit? That's dumb. I don't care about "sending a message", getting 3 outs is enough of a message for me.

My source from some players on the team is his eye is swollen shut and had a lot of swelling.

Yeah, a broken orbital bone is a bad deal.

Yeah, so you couldn't be more wrong, which isn't surprising on the internet. I played baseball for 14 years. Admittedly I never played past high school, but was a varsity player for 3 years at a 4A school, including starting 2 of those years at first and pitched. So again, not the best player in the world by any means, but still played a lot of ball. Get over your romanticized idea that a starter has to plunk somebody because you got your feelings hurt from your buddy getting pegged. Get the outs and move on. And don't say "well MLB players used to do it all the time" it was ridiculous then and it's ridiculous now. Not being able to control yourself and help your team isn't cool, it's childish.
Thisguy1

99% of baseball players played baseball for 14 years if you're going to go back to tee ball like you did, so I don't know that using that is the flex you think it is.

I don't know how to explain this to you other than just to say it, but hitting a guy, especially an important one, in retaliation means more to the guys in that dugout than getting 3 outs immediately after. Nobody is clearing a dugout when the other team retires the side.

And I'm not advocating we should have hit someone after they hit Kellner. It was an 0-2 count to the 9-hole hitter who has been struggling at the plate with one of the best players in America on deck in a close game. It wasn't intentional.

I'm not trying to flex. I even said repeatedly that I'm not the best player or anything, but I played ball. That's the point of that.

You don't have to explain your point of view, I understand what you and people like you think you're doing. I just don't agree that it's right or good, and think it's detrimental to the team. The objective is to score more runs than the other team, giving your opponent a free baserunner is antithetical to that objective. I couldn't care less about getting caught up in a dick measuring contest and would rather get the outs. As a pitcher it's my job to get outs. That's it.

My guy gets hit in the face, then their next batter is getting a plus fastball high and tight. Up to him to get out of the way.

I once had to defend my position for hitting guys in a class in college. What started with an honest conversation with the professor who loved baseball and knew I was a baseball player ended with me in front of the class explaining to horrified moms how I could ever hit their kid on purpose.

What I want to know is was there an apology from Ole Miss for this? This wasn't a routine hitting somebody in the leg.

It seems we have been getting an inordinate amount of high and inside pitches. If a pitcher purposely throws high and inside he is well aware there is a significantly elevated chance of hitting the batter in the head.

It is our guys being hit in the head in recent games, not the other teams.

It's not apples and oranges. Not anywhere close. Baseball players know, if your teammates keep getting hit, you hit the other guys. You hit them hard, and maybe don't make it too obvious. The opposing team's pitchers will stop throwing inside inside because they know their teammates are going to pay for it if they hit somebody. It really is that simple. When I was in HS, we had a standing rule amongst the pitchers on our team, we get hit, they get hit. Coaches didn't have to tell us anyhting... it's just baseball. Other teams knew this, and guess what? We stopped getting hit as much because word gets around.

This is how the game has been played for over 100 years. The game will police itself, if you just let it. Too many participation trophies and fuzzy feel goods.

Video posted in response to the debate about whether it is ever worth it to put someone on base just for retaliation. Obviously it was for Maddux. This is just one tiny example of course, but it was not only a 4-2 game (thus a HBP allows the tying run to the plate), but he knew it would cost him the win and get him sent back down. Still he considered it necessary, as countless other pitchers have through the years.

There are only three possible outcomes and intentionality doesn't matter.

They meant to hit you in the head. Then you retaliate.

They meant to brush you back and missed. If you're going to brush back you better be REAL accurate or don't do it. If you mess that up you get hit back. I agree that if you miss and hit them in the side you can let that slide, but not the head.

They're not even trying to brush back which means they missed their spot by over a foot with a fastball. If you can't keep it away from someone's head when you're trying to throw a pitch near the zone then you shouldn't be out there. If the coach let's you anyway then you get hit back.

1st baseman on my son's HS baseball team got hit in the eye, broken orbital and they had to peal his scalp, repair the damage and stitch him back together. Out for season, but continued to play into college. Had dinner with the doctor that did the procedure and got way too much information about the procedure. It was enough seeing his head shaved with stitches ear to ear across the top of his head. Lucky for the first baseman, his glasses saved his eye.

If Maddox hit you it was intentional,

You retaliate if warranted but I don't think that was intentional. Other issue is you are the road team in a hostile environment in a night game with a bunch of lubed up fans. You hit someone on purpose you'll have to deal with those fans.

So you believe the Ole Miss pitcher was a bully and intentionally threw at Kellner? If not, your analogy sucks.

You're right. Next time someone loses control of their car and T-bones you, just let them go, tell them you understand how hard they tried, and go pay for your own repairs.
