This weekend, Texas A&M track & field will travel to Lexington, Kentucky, to compete in the SEC Outdoor Championships. On Wednesday's edition of TexAgs Live, legendary coach Pat Henry joined the show to speak on a handful of his special athletes in Aggieland.
Key notes from Pat Henry interview
- That word peaking, I never use it, but I understand what you’re saying. At this point in the season, we are trying to be the best we can. This is the set-up meet. This is the conference championship, and we want to be successful here.
- The 15 to 16 teams here; it's like every other sport in the SEC. The SEC has dominated in sport of track and field. We had a good time in the Big 12, but we have dominated, and this meet is as good as any competition we are in. If you aren’t ready to go this weekend, you’re out. What makes it fun is being at your best when you’re with the best. Doesn’t matter how many times you’ve won the 100-meter before. We have to perform well.
- Heather Abadie has been here all four years, and her mom was an athlete for me at LSU. It’s great to see her at her best. It doesn’t mean she will this week, but I think she will. She needs to be at her best every single time. She’s old enough to know that this is how it is.
- Sofia Yakushina is a freshman. She comes in with good marks, but she hasn’t ever been able to put them together the way she has been. Mario Sategna has done a good job with her this year. To be a good hurdler and shot putter, she has to work really hard and put in a lot of hours. I’ve never had a freshman put it together this way.
- Ja'Qualon Scott is a competitor. If we have one on the whole team, he and Auhmad Robinson are ready to line it up, and he has never not lined it up. He runs the short hurdles and 400m hurdles, and he will run a leg on the 4x100m relay. He is a really tough guy.
