Texas A&M women's golf will kick off its 2025-26 campaign with The Carmel Cup on August 29-31. Before the season starts, head coach Gerrod Chadwell joined TexAgs Live to give us a look at his fifth-year roster with a couple of new faces joining the team.
Key notes from Gerrod Chadwell interview
- We get to catch our breath in November-December, but during the summer, we had so many girls playing golf and good golf, that we tried to support them and are still recruiting. We capped off the summer with six ladies at the U.S. Amateur. It was amazing to see. One of the biggest accomplishments outside of the postseason this program has had.
- This is our fourth year going to Pebble Beach. It’s upon us in a hurry. Trying to find our best six girls for that one, and we leave a week from tomorrow to get the season started. That’s Labor Day weekend, and we go all the way to Memorial weekend for our season. I’m excited to see where were at.
- Pebble Beach is a totally different climate. The golf ball doesn’t fly as far, and it's on different grass. But man, you’re at Pebble Beach. It’s an iconic venue that has you mesmerized by the golf course. We have some special people who are close to our program who will have the girls over for dinner and watch the football game... It’s a great weekend to get us started.
- With our sport, we don’t do home and away. We’ve been fortunate in the club with The Traditions Club bringing it back. The namesake for that event is Monica Welsh, Gen. Mark A. Welsh III’s sister. It’s an honor to be able to carry on her name and legacy for the event. It’s normally a two-day event, so it's almost over before it starts. It’s nice that it's spread out over three days. Hopefully, a lot of Aggies come out and give us a nice home crowd to play in front of. The girls always get excited for that one, so that will be here before we know it in April.
- We return Cayetana Fernández García-Poggio. She had a good summer. Vanessa Borovilos had a great freshman year. She’s playing in the Women’s Canadian Open, which is a PGA event. We return Kynadie Adams, who is an Alabama transfer and Scarlett Schremmer. About half the roster will be familiar faces, and the other half is five totally new faces to the team.
- Louise Reau is a transfer from Georgia Southern, who was their Conference player of the Year. I think arguably, the best freshman class in the county combined in as far as the depth. Schremmer, Brynn Kort, Natalie Yen and Avery Zweig all carry accolades in junior golf. They’ve looked very settled in once they’ve gotten here. We had our first team meeting yesterday, and everyone is excited for the competition. Last year, it was pretty thin. We only had six bodies, so now we have a total of 10. That lineup can change throughout the spring, so we're just excited for the competition at home to make us sharper.
- That's the one thing we’ve tried to change since getting here. I’d be remiss if I didn't say that Giovana Maymon wasn’t a part of that. We had a bunch of strangers come together that first year and accomplish something great, going to the semifinals.
- Those ladies helped lay the cultural foundation of what we wanted this program to be about. I think we’ve seen that with recruiting classes going forward. There’s no magic thing to what we're doing here. It’s a recipe for a lot of things. We have a campus that’s safe, a place where mothers and fathers like to drop their daughters off and know they are taken care of. We work hard at what we do and surround the young ladies with people who care about them, not only here but after here. Maybe that’s the recipe of our culture, but our official visits are amazing. We just have to get them to come here and show that this is a place you can get at golf.
- The Traditions Club is doing the regrassing and is now in amazing shape. I'm excited for them to compete on that venue and help us get better. October 13 is Columbus Day… We have our fundraiser day, which features a scramble format where the ladies are on every hole or every other hole, so it's a good chance to meet them. It’s an amazing day full of fun and a lot of laughs.
- It’s on October 13. The Aggie Women’s Golf Club. You can sign up HERE. I'm looking forward to seeing y’all.
