With the Carmel Cup just three days away, Texas A&M head women's golf coach Gerrod Chadwell joined us for Tuesday's edition of TexAgs Live to recap the offseason and preview the Aggies' showing at Pebble Beach Golf Links in California on August 29-31.
Key notes from Gerrod Chadwell interview
- I am excited. There is a good trade-off in going to Pebble Beach this starting this early. It is just wild to think that this tournament factors into the postseason. This is the fourth year in a row, but probably the last. It is getting more expensive by the year.
- The end of last season, every day, I get reminded of it. It is always there. I am ready to get that behind us. Just getting on site, preparing how to attack that golf course. It was disappointing, but it's hard to replace your best player who leaves middle of the semester. With that group, the lack of experience they had, I think it was one of the best coaching jobs collectively by everybody that I had been a part of. To be that close and not execute on that last hole stings, but what keeps you sane is to see that they did a great job to get themselves to that point.
- The first group hadn’t had much success, but they became more talented the more they went through. You bring some transfers into that, it is not any disrespect to that group that accomplished a lot. We were the Block T for the final round, and talent is one of the ingredients in our recipe. I think the room has that. We have to come together and go through some hard things in order to execute in those moments in April and May. In the gym this morning, it was refreshing to hear that the bar is much higher coming in. Yesterday, it was a day off, but everyone was still at the facility. That tells you that everything is going to be OK. All the stuff that gels into having a championship run is the choices they make outside of the time we dictate for them. How they are spending their time, that’s going to equate to good things.
- Vanessa Borovilos wasn’t in qualifying because she was playing a tour event. Cayetana Fernández García-Poggio finished in fifth. It is good for everybody. When Giovana Maymon and I were hired here, we tried to bring competition in on a daily basis. We have that right away. And it happens to be a freshman. They have continued to stake their claim. Kynadie Adams and Borovilos had a great summer. Sky Sudberry and Mia Nixon played a lot. Everyone played a lot. We can’t make them play summer events, and their choosing to play on their own time and be ready coming in can only help them put our best foot forward this weekend.
- The Columbus Day Fundraiser is a four-person scramble format. The girls will be on every other hole, hitting shots, and you will get to meet them. We do a steak dinner afterwards. We will give away some things. We will get to know them further, and it will be a great day. Get to know them on a personal level, but also up close and see how talented they are. It will help raise money to offset budget deficiencies around the team. It is on October 12.
