Key notes from G Guerrieri interview
- Right now, undefeated is a good place to be. Anyone who has seen our team play is probably feeling pretty good, as are we. We're scoring goals, but we're giving up some goals we shouldn't. That's absolutely correctable. We'll focus on that today and tomorrow in training. This is our last week of non-conference play, and we're ahead of schedule vs. where we thought we'd be at this point. This week will be a big test because we are going on the road for two matches.
- The goals we're allowing are mental mistakes because they're things we talk about daily, and it's just a matter of cleaning it up. It's hard when you've got players who have been playing for a long time with bad habits in their game. It takes some time to correct those bad habits. The three goals we've given up have been little brain farts of sorts. They've stood out as big brain farts, but that's part of the learning process, and that's why we try to play teams that will challenge us in the non-conference. The games in the SEC are so close that one thing here or there will decide it. Forcing people to make errors could be the difference between challenging to win the league or scrapping toward the bottom of the table.
- It's a new team. We have 11 new starters. With that comes a learning process and the need to form that rhythm with each other. It's like having a new dance partner. You'll be better the second, third, fifth and 11th time. The quality in our attack will come down to the quality of service and the timing of our runs. There have been some bad habits that our coaches are correcting and then making good habits into things we do every day.
- Kaylee Noble is someone we brought in as a first-team all-conference player, and we knew she'd give us something that we didn't have, which is a tall, athletic, speedy frame up front. She's adept at taking people on. It's just a matter of her getting comfortable and knowing her role in our system. She did the things we've been asking and more, and she had three goals and an assist on Sunday night. She has been so close to doing that a few other times. Now, it's just a matter of reinforcing that positive behavior. She's a great kid and very thankful for the opportunity she's getting at Texas A&M.
- Holly Storer had a brace, and it's the same thing with her. She's a new player who's getting used to the speed of play. It's going to amp up this week because we'll play a physical team on Thursday in SFA before we play the defending champions in the Big 12 and the No. 4 team in the country in TCU. You're going to have to play at a speed that's uncomfortable, and we have to be comfortable with being uncomfortable.
- Our games with TCU have usually been a one-goal game here or there. We beat them 2-0 last year. That's last year. We've got to be able to understand that it's going to be a tight game and one that will ebb and flow. Can we keep our concentration? Can we put them in jeopardy instead of us having to react to what they do?
- SFA is coming off a win in El Paso, and this is only their second home game of the season. It'll be their biggest home game of the year, and it's the first time we've ever gone to Nacogdoches. We're expecting a lot of energy and a big crowd. It's a team that is used to winning, so it should be a bit of a barn-burner.
