Key notes from Gerrod Chadwell interview
- We are playing good golf right now. This was a little different fashion because we had to come from behind in the last round, but that is what you love to see with your team. Whether it is with the lead or from behind, you can count on them when all the chips are on the table.
- There’s a lot of preseason hype. I think that’s due in large part to our young ladies on the roster. Putting in the work over the summer to get to this point. Baylor's coach is a good friend, and he was frustrated based on their ranking in the preseason, but they are a really good team. We will see a lot of them this year. We were fortunate to have one under our belt compared to them, where it was their first tournament. It was a very challenging golf course. Cameras everywhere made it tough.
- It feels a lot different than last year. The difference from this time last year to now, we just graduated three of the best players in program history, and that is a lot of reps. We were really young last year. We had Adela Cernousek struggling with the stages of Q-school. It was a lot of noise this year. The challenge is that we have a lot of depth. The lineup will change consistently. Our at-home event will be just as hard as a tournament to make the lineup. Hopefully, we have the maturity to know we are getting better each day, fighting between everything within our walls.
- Sky Sudberry stayed here most of the summer, practicing and playing a lot. You’ve seen that over the past two weeks. We had six ladies at the U.S. Amateur, which is an accomplishment in itself. In those three months, you choose to get better in that time, or someone else will. I am thankful for that. They continue to compete and push forward for themselves, and that only helps the team.
- Brynn Kort is a bulldog, man. She is gritty. She hits it very straight. She is not the longest person, but her wedge game is very underrated. She looked very comfortable this week. The middle rounds were very impressive. She had a really good back nine that saved us. She is going to play a lot of golf for us, and her performance this week really carried us.
- We have three and a half weeks of a break until our next tournament. They haven’t had the time to really enjoy being a student athlete and take care of us. We have some visits during this time, too. We never really get to catch our breath during the season, so this helps. We have this gap, then we will have three events like every other week later in the fall. Our spring schedule is also really stout. We need to apply what we learned this fall and apply it forward.
- Our best golf is still ahead of us. We don’t know who our best five is. I am still excited for that journey. It sets itself up by itself by March. We’ve got today to get better, and that is what we want to do. Reel things back in the present. But overall, just enjoying it. Winning a tournament is a great accomplishment. We beat 11 other teams this week. Normal wins are against 14 other teams. We are really trying to take in what we’ve done so far.
