It's time. Time to lay it all out on the track, the runway, the throwing circle, one chance to leave it all out there and do what you can for your school. The nation's best are in Oregon this week for the NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships. The Aggie man are your reigning national champions and are on a mission to secure a consecutive title, while our women are trying to improve upon their 3rd place finish from a year ago.
The Aggies lead the way for most entires combined with 17 women and 16 men. No women's team has more and the men are only behind Arkansas (21). It's not always the most important thing, but it's better going into a battle with more ammo. You have the entries, now it's time to do some damage and get people into position to score. This meet is 4 days, men kick things off Wednesday, then women, then the men, then the women.
Like regionals had the first round then the quarterfinals. For all races aside from the 5k and 10k, there will be the semifinals and finals. The semifinals will be 3 heats of 8 and the final will be 9 athletes. The heats are slotted based on performances in the quarterfinals, this leads to loaded heats and some easier heats, but that's just the game. For every race 800 and below, the top 2 in each heat will automatically advance then the next 3 best times will conclude the finals. All that matters for the running events are getting into that final and giving yourself an opportunity at some points. Similar situation for field events, except finals are right after the prelims.
On the men's side of things, Arkansas rolls in as the heavy favorites. Teams like us, Oregon, Georgia, and Auburn are waiting for Arkansas to slip and capture the glory. Arkansas is led by their dynamic sprinter Jelani Watkins who is projected to win the 100/200 and put them in position to score big in the 4x100. They have a solid 400 runner and they went 1-2 in the 800 indoors. They also have two strong distance runner in Brian Masai and Ernest Cheruiyot who are projected to score big, and a great high jumper. Oregon is full of distance stars and has some strong throwers. Georgia is loaded on the 4x400 and 400 with a strong hurdler and field event athletes. Auburn is loaded in the sprints with 5 in the 100, and Ja'Kobe Tharp in the 110 hurdles.
Our men's team is very top heavy. We have the national leaders in the javelin in Zaza Nnamdi and the 400 hurdles in Ja'Qualon Scott. Also in the top ten is Peter Narumbe in the 800 and our 4x400 both number 5, Etoro Bassey sixth in the high jump, and Scott 8th in the 110 hurdles. A wildcard is Aleksandr Solovev who is ranked outside the top ten, but hasn't jumped his best this outdoor season. He won this meet last year and was second at the indoor nationals. We need to make sure our big dogs score! Getting those 10 and 8 and 6 points are critical and make a huge difference. Now what is equally important is getting more points. Every single point matters and we're going to need our other entires to step up. We're going to need some huge PB's, people rising to the occasion. Plenty of our field event athletes are capable of getting some points if they have a great day. At a meet like this, many will fold, many have mishaps, the opportunity to move up these rankings and score are always there.
On the women's side Georgia is a big favorite, albeit not as much as Arkansas on the men's side. Georgia is led by sprinting phenom Adeajah Hodge, a sub 49 400 runner in Dejeana Oakley, a strong 400 hurdler in Michelle Smith, two loaded relays, and a couple shot putters. They are too heavy and will score big barring disasters. There's a close race behind them between Florida, us, Oregon, USC, and SC.
For our women's teams it's been a bit of an unusual year. 2 of our best athletes who won a gold and a silver at this meet last year transferred out, Winny Bii in the winter, and Sofia Yakushina a week ago. One of our big time transfers Adriana Tatum has been injured and wasn't able to compete this season. However there have been plenty of great. Our seniors have been so great this year. Our versatile sprinting phenoms Camryn Dickson and Jasmine Montgomery are back again at this meet to contest 4 events: 100, 200, and both relays. Hurdler Jaiya Covington is back after finishing 2nd last year and 3rd indoors. After missing 2025, Katelyn Fairchild is back. She placed 3rd in 2023. Our women's 4x100 and 4x400 are both ranked 7th and it would be huge if we improve on that. We also need some help from Deborah Cherono who's behind the big PB she set at this meet last year and our field event athletes like Morgan Davis in the long jump and Abigail Martin in the discus.
This meet is always must see television. It's also a lot more entertaining knowing we have two strong teams that are both in contention to be on the podium. While our men don't have the same odds of winning again as they did going into it last year, one thing about is this meet is that anything can happen. For one team the stars will align and all goes right. Pat Henry always says you just have to hope that all our athletes have the best day on the same day. Let's go BTHO everybody and add to our trophy case!!!!!!!!!
