Went to the Tone Shop in Dallas today, and they have a great selection. I'm not really in the market for a new guitar, but I found one I rather liked. It's the first time I've played a PRS that really suited me. No offense to the PRS fans, their guitars are like Glocks to me - as many times as I've tried them out, I just can't get one that feels comfortable and right to me. I know and respect that they are very good guitars. I like the idea of a semi-hollow body for a slightly warmer tone. This is a CE-24… anybody played one that wants to share their opinion? Is the semi-hollow version worth it?

I've had three and sold just because I'm a bit of a PRS nomad. Pound for pound the CE24 is a damned fine instrument. The 85/15 pickups are relatively hot, but l liked them enough to get them out in a PRS Custom 24 that had pickups I didn't like. I haven't tried the semi-hollow version, but if you like it in the shop I'd give it a shot.

The downside with the modern CEs is they're a hybrid of US and foreign made. Bridge is foreign made as well as tuners. Those can be swapped if you want to but it is something to consider.

Depends what you like. I'm more of a tele/LP player, and PRS guitars always had an uninteresting tone, for me. I tried a semi hollow CE and didn't like it at all. I think the 85/15 pickups sound god awful. The guitar felt great and played very smooth, but I also don't care for the 24 fret board. Nothing was where I expected it to be.

Now, I'm on day 2 of playing my new PRS DGT, and this is much more my kind of guitar. I'm loving this so far.

Hold on a tick. Might confirm what pickups are in it. 85/15s are typically uncovered.

Looking closer the pickup covers are etched. What is the etching? That changes a lot.

I assume those are a take on the Gibson 57s, which I do like the sound of.

Did you see and/or play this McCarty 594, they have? Obviously much more expensive because it's a core model, but they have budget versions.

https://www.toneshopguitars.com/products/used-2024-prs-mccarty-594-10-top-charcoal-burst-w-case-tsu21281?pr_prod_strat=e5_desc&pr_rec_id=559058bfe&pr_rec_pid=8816269099265&pr_ref_pid=8816264937729&pr_seq=uniform

You should definitely play both the CE 24 and McCarty, imo. That should demonstrate the huge difference between those two guitars. The McCarty is their LP clone.

ETA: After looking through their site, they have a lot of S2 versions of the DGT. I would highly recommend trying those out. However, I don't know if the S2 version has the DGT pickups in them. My experience with these pickups, so far, has been great. I'm still getting to know this guitar, but it keeps making me want to pick it up and play it because of how incredible it plays and many of the sounds I am able to get out of it. Definitely think I found my PRS model of choice, now.

I have to share, that after reading all these posts yesterday and then watching the game (also factoring in that I'm a bit under the weather and took NyQuil)…

I had an epic dream that I spent over $10k on three different green guitars to raise money for the A&M Collective….and I was struggling to explain to my wife when/why they all showed up at the same time!

Hahaha….i blame this thread and the NyQuil, but I thought the group would appreciate it.

So...

I may or may not be pushing to close on that jade/moss green quilted wood library DGT with the Brazilian rosewood board. I've always wanted a brazilian board, as a collector's item, and I'm getting a great deal on it, after calling the shop and working with them on pricing.

I just can't get over how gorgeous that one is and I can grab it for a fantastic deal. If I decide to sell one of these in the future, I should at least be able to get what I purchased them for, if not a little bit of profit.

I have a problem...

Thank you (and everybody else) for the PRS feedback. I'm really enjoying the LP I picked up in January, and I don't really need another guitar, or a divorce, lol. I didn't play that PRS. I only tried this one because it was a semi-hollow and that intrigues me. And I was pleasantly surprised that it felt good to me. May be something I pursue further down the road.

FWIW, I may try the Jimmy Page wiring mod. I actually like the way my pickups sound right now, especially after tweaking the heights of the pole pieces. I may try some different magnets in them too. My LP is just a Studio, and not a vintage year, so I'm totally cool with trying some different mods to get what I'm after.

For me, 50's wiring is a must with a LP.

Also, if you want the out of phase push/pull, you need to make sure you have the 4 conductor version of your pickups. If it's the single braided conductor wire, then you won't be able to do the page wiring.

Do you know which pickups they put in that LP? A lot of studios get those ****ty 490r pickups, which I think are Gibsons worst pickups, by far. Get yourself a nice set of unpotted, low output, PAF pickups from a great third party maker like Seymour Duncan, Lollar, or someone else. Those with 50's wiring will get you such better tones than the 490r in modern wiring.

I'm just throwing all of that out there because you mentioned the JP mod, so I assume you are looking for that vintage tone.

My LP has 490r/498t and they're better than some say. I've considered 57s but I think a magnet swap will be next up. My neck pup was a little muddy but adjusting the overall height and then tweaking the pole pieces gave me more clarity.

It's all relative to what you are comparing them to, but I just consider them the bottom of the Gibson pickup range. That's a very common opinion among players and I think is one of the reason you don't see them in their standard lines.

However, I've also not been a fan of the Classic 57's. I took a pair of 57's out of my '01 ES-335 and put in a set of SD antiquities. Those sound fantastic in that guitar.

All personal preference, obviously. I don't know if you have 50's wiring or not, but that will also help with maintaining note clarity when reducing vol and tone pots.

Enjoy your experimenting! Messing with different electronics and wiring is fun.

ETA: I posted a ways back on this thread, while I was searching for some good humbucker tones. I found a couple of great videos at the time. One specifically mentioned dialing in your perfect neck tone first, and then adjust your tone/vol pots on the bridge to get that where you want it. I've had a lot of success with that method. I used to always focus on the bridge pickup and then wonder why my neck pickup sounded muddy and useless.

Hello guitarists!

I'm wondering if the following is worthy of an EB thread:

I like Eric Clapton just fine, but I just don't see him as "one of the greatest guitarists ever."

I love guitar oriented music and to me, so many players are more satisfying to listen to, even a lot more blues or blues-rock players.

I'm a guitar fan but unfortunately i can not say I'm a player. So asking a bunch of players - am I just missing something fundamental?

Ok. So ummm. What are your thoughts on SRV?

I love SRV. My favorite individual performer.

I like Hendrix, Johnny Winter, Buddy Guy, Robin Trower, Eric Johnson, Sonny Landreth, EVH, Scholz, Gilmour, Morello and Allman to name a few.

It just seems like those guys are trying to push things to another level a lot of the time. Clapton seems content to be slow-hand, and I honestly believe he is really trying to express more vocally than with his guitar.

I like his Cream stuff (although Allman had the better guitar on Layla, imo). Seems he took his foot off the pedal after that. I will say I really like "The Core." It's my favorite of his solo songs. It just seems like so much of his solo stuff is him crooning along without featuring the guitar much or challenging himself on it. To me, anyway.

Damn, I've been doing so much on Reverb, lately.

I sold my '68 Fender Custom Pro Virbro Champ RI, my Custom Shop Gibson LP, and I just packed up and shipped my Friedman Little Sister head. Trying to get rid of gear I just don't use at all. Going to probably also start listing all my pedals and other peripherals.

I loved the Little Sister, when I wanted that "Marshally" thing. But I didn't ever really gel with the Marshall 2x12 closed-back cabinet I've had for years. For example, I've tried running my Tone King out to the Marshall cab, instead of the built-in speaker. I immediately lose 30% of the tone I love from this amp, when doing so.

Finally made the decision to get rid of the cab, sell the Little Sister head, and buy a used Little Sister Combo. Ended up buying a combo for $1,200 + shipping and sold my little sister head for $1,050 + shipping. Not a bad tradeoff.

Now I have this 2x12 slanted Marshall cab with Greenbacks in it. This is going to be hard to sell. I dread trying to ship something like this, so may just go to GC and sell for half the value. I don't like listing things on Craig's list and facebook marketplace because I don't want random people coming to my house.

Hasn't really been the purpose of this thread, unless you are focusing on the gear used by these artists. Though we tend to veer off every once in a while, I think the purpose of this thread is gear discussion. I would just start a new thread.

I've been eyeing the Little Sister head w/ Friedman cab for awhile now. I go back and forth with the head / cab versus just getting the combo.

That's a great deal on the combo!

Thanks, I knew I didn't want to overclutter this thread with that discussion, just get a sanity check on whether it was worth a thread (thinking maybe I missed it but it had been discussed before.) Will do another google search and either start or maybe resurrect a thread.

I haven't tried the little sister through the paired cab from Friedman, so definitely worth trying out. I just love the convenience of combo amps and the ability to specifically effect the tone of that amp through speaker swaps, if needed.

Either way, the Little Sister is an incredibly good amp. I heard one of the guitar-tubers once say the tones you get out of the Friedman Little Sister are the sounds you hear when listening to these classic rock albums. That is versus the sounds you get with most Marshalls at lower volumes. The only way to attain those tones on most Marshall's I've tried has been cranking them above 95-100dB.

Even though I only play it 10-15% of the time (the Imperial being my main amp) I couldn't just sell it and not have it as an option. Sometimes, I've just gotta plug into that bad boy and let it rip!

I've heard the LS and well, all the Frieman's, have a GREAT master volume so you're not knocking down the walls but still get that crunch.

Have you tried running the TK and LS in stereo? Watched a That Pedal Show episode and that really got my mind thinking.
Lathspell
How long do you want to ignore this user?

Hahah, no. I've never tried running them in stereo. My Bluesky does have a L Out and R Out, but that pedal is in my effects signal chain, so not setup to go straight out to the amps. I could always give it a try, though, once my new LS gets in.
