Three episodes in and the closest thing this can be compared to at this point is Apple's other feel-good sports series, Ted Lasso. Which I liked fine enough, but gave up early in season two. Honestly - and I know not everyone's going to agree - I like this a lot better. It's Ted Lasso by way of Tin Cup, with a splash of Cameron Crowe, and way more my vibe in general.

I wasn't even looking for a new series - I have a bunch of movies I need to catch up on - so this one was already on a short leash for me. On top of that, there was something about the teen character I found somewhat annoying in the trailer. But by the end of the pilot he and the show completely won me over, to the point where I immediately knocked out the next two episodes (all three released this past Tuesday).

Overall, the cast is fun, the plot is engaging, and the whole thing has a nice, relaxed charm. In fact, it's kind of the perfect summer show, one I'm now actively looking forward to following over the next couple of months.

The liberal transgender slant has really turned me off. The first 3 episodes were great but the 4th one **** the bed imo.

I mean, the show is clearly mocking her. Or is at least in on the joke / super aware of how they're using her, which is as a caricatured foil to Wilson and Maron. It's not as if Apple suddenly went woke in their Dadcore show. IMO, she's an interesting wedge/wrench so far, and worth it for Maron's quips alone.

I haven't watched episode 4 yet, but is the waitress girlfriend trans? Looked like it but was not clear.

I want to like it as I've liked almost everything on Apple, but its not really clicking for me.

  • For a comedy... theres not really anything overtly funny
  • Why does the kid dress and move like he does? Its like they dressed him like a cartoon version of an LA cholo.
  • Could do without the Happy Gilmore-esque sounds and shots after every swing
  • The golf portions were seemingly done without anyone whos ever seen or played golf. Things like "the back 9 is about to start!" as if theres a halftime. Or losing his mind during a club fitting (which for some reason also became a sim round)

Netflix: "Hey, lets add 20 new foreign language films to make it look like we're adding a bunch of good content"

Apple: "Here, you get Stick"

Advantage: Apple

I agree that they're poking fun at the 20 something woke cliche, especially as a counter to the grumpy Maron and how his life has been invaded by all these characters.

Episode fell flat for me as a golfer simply because I want to see that aspect of the show progress each Episode.

The thumbnail image for the next episode looks like Zero is all decked out in a caddie outfit. I think that could be pretty interesting as Maron teaches her how to caddie.

Episode 4 was a pretty big shank. Also, it was kinda weird they pandered to Gen Z and Boomers at the same time, but didn't bother to tie it off with a joke.

And they revealed one of the show's villain and Stick's secret through exposition and they just kinda let it hang out there.

Also the story seems pretty by the numbers and telegraphed. So hopefully there is a twist or something. I kinda feel like each episode is getting progressively duller.

It's fine. The last episode did absolutely nothing for me, because it didn't feel like it did anything for the plot.

And, I like Owen Wilson, but he's just playing the same character that he's played in countless movies before.

Pretty easily. One of the most entertaining first seasons I've ever watched, followed by a snooze fest most of the rest of the way.

Fair enough.

I get that they can't do a tournament or whatever every episode, but this episode did at least need *a* golf scene.

through 2 episodes and this show is about as bang average as it gets for me

nothing bad to say, but nothing good to say either, I wouldn't recommend someone watch it other than just looking for a light easy show to watch when you don't want to take on anything to serious

actually I have something bad to say, some of the cgi they throw in is so weird and looks bad it takes me out of it but that's nitpicky

Every time she opened her mouth I cringed and closed my eyes. So eyebrows not that big a deal for me lol

I think that's the point of her character. Super cringey and thinks she knows everything…like most teens/20 year olds.

I like the show. It has potential. Seeing where it goes

I agree they are absolutely making fun of Zero and the ignorance of her world view.

But for me, I would prefer to watch the kids dynamic with Owen and see some growth from both of them. The kid obviously doesn't have the mental game to compete at a high level, and Owen lost his mental game, so let's see those two characters push and pull and grow. Episode 4 felt like a side quest that went nowhere and soured me.

I'm fine they wanted to distract the teenager with a girl. Just weird they decided to distract the good looking talented prodigy with such a socially divisive zero. Not buying that is the one who catches his eye in a cross country journey.

Good show. The only episode I didn't care much for was epi 4, but not because of the transgender stuff. It is more fun when golf is involved. The teenage drama **** can't carry its own episode.

So far really liking it otherwise. I've always really liked the roles Owen Wilson plays.

TC, is Owen Wilson as genuine in real life as he comes across in his roles?

Just because her pronouns were she/they doesn't mean she is trans.

I've never met him (I saw him once at a farmers market in Venice, CA) but based on everything I've heard, yeah it sounds like he's just genuine in real life.

Episode 5 was better, but the show still really has a paint by numbers feel as we are having a build up, with the expectation it is going to fully drop off and be disrupted again next episode.

I am trying to figure out why I loved Ted Lasso and much cooler on this show. I think part of it was Episode 4 was just so bad and Ted Lasso Season 1 never had an episode as bad as Episode 4. It isn't the pronoun issue or even Zero's character. It was just the episode seemed to feel the need to explain the plot. Too much telling and not enough showing. Honestly, the fact the Santi's mother didn't know that Pryce had a kid is mind blowing. Pryce is a Ryder Cup caliber golfer, his son dying of cancer would be all over ESPN/news etc.

This episode did the same thing with Mitt's wife's death. Where the characters kinda just tell each other things without it always feeling earned.

I think what made Ted Lasso special, is the side characters all felt like they could have been a major character in another show, they side characters seemed to be living their own lives and having their own motivations. This show only Pryce seems to be going on the journey and the other characters are just there to say lines. I don't think I described this very well.

I think what bothers me about Stick is it feels too safe and too pandering, which I am probably holding against the show.

I think a more interesting show would have been just Zero, Pryce, and Mitts. Zero being this lost soul bouncing around dead-in jobs in around golf courses, her path intersecting with Pryce and him seeing a spark of talent and them trying to nurture it. Making the golf student more or a project and more questions on why Stick would help. There would have been avenues for more storylines and been different. Although, people would have screamed woke.

I think my biggest issue with the show is I don't really care about Santi. The actor is doing a fine job, but they don't give the character a lot to do. I almost feel like he is too good at golf for this story. His struggle is basically maturing and learning to manage the course which I haven't found as compelling as say Jaime Tartt from Ted Lasso who had massive trauma and character flaws to overcome.

Or there are people who understand biology and realize that pronouns are just a stupid way for people to put labels on to make themselves feel special and most people just dgaf.

No one is disputing anything you're saying. We're simply wondering if the people here using the word "trans" understand that someone using different pronouns isn't the same as being transgender.

I thought Ted Lasso was waaaaay cornier than this, but I definitely agree about not caring about Santi. It's kind of weird how much of a non-character he's become the last couple episodes. Right now, he's more of a prop that the other characters are manipulating, the story isn't being told from his point of view at all, etc. Hopefully that changes, though.

I'd say overall I agree with most critiques of the show so far (save for the anti-woke overreactions), but I still find it enjoyable. For me it's just a nice, leisurely half-hour watch, and nothing more.

I agree it should be a leisurely half-hour show annd probably is hitting that mark. I have Episodes 1-3 at around 7.5/10, episode 4 at like 2/10 and episode 5 at around 7.

My biggest issue with 4 is it felt like they were setting up artificial story lines and setting them up poorly. Where Episode 1-3 and 5 felt like one show and 4 was a whole other show. It wasn't the wokeness it was the writing and story structure. The conflict just felt artificial.

I think I am annoyed because it feels like there is a better show here than what we are getting. I don't hate hate it. Just disappointed, I think.
